I would strongly recommend Nikon D90, you won't be disappointed with this camera even with kit lens 18-105mm.

All the latest generation DSLRs will produce images of higher quality than most of us could ever need. I would suggest you make a short list after reading the reviews on dpreview.com and other sites and deciding on which features are important to you. Then go to your local store and hold the cameras, play around with the controls and decide which one handles the best for you. The way a camers handles is by far the most important factor by this time in the decision making process. I was in the same position as you and was all for buying Canon but ended up with Nikon, The Canon simply didn't fit my hands.

I went out and got the Nikon D5000 and also the 70-300mm Lens i had a play with the 500D and it just did not feel as good as the Nikon.
All i have to do now is Learn how to use it !!!!!
