View Full Version : Looking for a baby chair
... not a bouncer... not a high chair... not a swing... just a chair - which can be used from pretty much newborn up to about age two
I don't want a high chair for feeding, and bouncers don't last long enough and wouldn't be suitable for feeding
The nearest I've found so far seems to be a rocker with feet to stop it rocking when necessary
Has anybody seen this kind of thing anywhere?
Mothercare sold them for donkey's years, but don't seem to do them anymore
DeViL_WoMaN 21-01-2010, 17:50 Hey Strix, I've not particularly seen them anywhere else but I have the Fisher Price Newborn to Toddler Rocker chair that I think your talking about. With my first baby I had a bouncer and it just didn't seem to sooth her, the bouncing seemed to make her worse. I bought the rocker chair and she loved it. It has the vibrate on it, rocks and when you stick the stand out to make it static it tips back and is more or less flat so baby can sleep.
I now use it with my 2nd baby and she loves it too, I deff recommend it :D
cosywolf 21-01-2010, 18:09 Very low? Looks a bit like a cross between a chair and one of those wire bouncers, but heftier? Can sit straight up, or lie down? I have one you can probably have, if it sounds suitable. Can do from birth onwards...they can be strapped in, but later can just sit in it.
If it sounds right, let me know. I'm shedding baby stuff at the moment.
cuddlycats 21-01-2010, 18:58 I too have just bought the fisher price newborn to toddler rocker (goes up to 4 years). I got it from amazon for £45. That was the cheapest place i could find.
Up until now my son has been in the chicco relax and play bouncer. He is 7 months but outgrown it weight wise. He loved it though as the recline feature made it lie flat and comfy to sleep in. The above fisher price one also reclines and folds flat (not tried that yet-literally came today)
donnaraz 22-01-2010, 11:57 hi. have a look the cushi tushi my little one loves it. can be used to about 18 months great for playing and feeding. easier to keep clean than high chair too
donna:)
lauren84 22-01-2010, 22:07 All I can say is good luck getting your toddler in a baby chair to feed at 2 :hihi: My little one likes to sit at the big peoples' table :)
funnily enough, we've had a look at the fisherprice rocker (and the rest of their range) today and it's on the shortlist at the moment, along with this (http://www.kiddies-kingdom.com/productsdetails.aspx?item_id=284), which folds down quite compactly for travelling, but I'm not that sure about it
Cozy - it sounds like you may have what I'm looking for!
Do you have any pics, or a product name I can google please?
Skippy06 24-01-2010, 19:31 Have you tried a Bumbo?
claire1976 24-01-2010, 20:24 Have you tried a Bumbo?
These are ace, I have one and they are suitable from when your baby can hold his head up unaided- around 8 weeks onwards. They are quite expensive new but you can get them on ebay quite cheap.
I plan to use the bumbo when weaning my little one, he is 4 months so not quite ready yet. Please don't use a rocker or bouncy chair for feeding, babies should be upright when on solids or the risk of choking is high.
MissGiggles 24-01-2010, 20:55 bumbos are ok if the child likes it. i bought a bumbo for my child and they hate it ! only been in it twice , so its up for sale x
MissGiggles 24-01-2010, 20:56 They do a chair for babys what can see them right until they are 4. These are called DooMoos x

just to let you know they have got loads of lionhart bebe pod in tk maxx for £12 pretty sure its like a bumbo. won't break the bank if baby doesn't like. I would have bought one but DD is 7 months now.
Can't personally say how good these chairs are but many do say they are great.

they also have these cheaper in tk maxx

These are nice but you can't use this for feeding a baby.
cosywolf 24-01-2010, 21:53 Because it's always lived at my outlaws, I can't find a photo...and obviously can't just pop into the other room and photograph it. I've tried searching Google images, but can't find anything similar.
I can see if they can dig it out for us this week, but can't really store it here as we're trying to move.
Hmm...I'll do another search.
cosywolf 24-01-2010, 22:04 Here it is: old style rocker (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://is.gumtree.com/ad_image/live/big/294061582.jpg&imgrefurl=http://swindon.gumtree.com/swindon/06/51895706.html&usg=__2TNzpJ4NHZQ9gXMkHPI2pPcWpAA=&h=268&w=358&sz=18&hl=en&start=141&sig2=A_ZnKiSwpuAPrPhrNQgaIg&um=1&tbnid=uSa0V6qLKDmOwM:&tbnh=91&tbnw=121&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbaby%2Brocking%2Bseat%26ndsp%3D18%26h l%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D126%26um%3D1&ei=YtBcS4CWDszj-Qbcu6gM)
It has little knobs on the sides you can't see in this pic that allow you to adjust the seat to sit up or recline. It rocks (the old fashioned foot tapping way), or sits still.
The colour is different...I think ours is red, but OH says orange. Cover it with a blanket, and it doesn't matter.
It's yours if you want it.
Thanks Cozy - that's the nearest thing to what I'm looking for. The Mothercare chair was a moulded plastic, bucket seat, with chrome legs, which you could adjust for angle, and a removable food/play tray
At the moment I'm favouring this (http://www.kiddies-kingdom.com/productsdetails.aspx?item_id=284) for portability and compactness, but it's not suitable from birth, so your chair would suit well in between times Cozy
I'll pm you my number
We used one of those old style rockers too, he loved it! And the portable booster seat is a good idea as well, because it can be used on the floor for play/meal times - we've got one (£12 from TKMaxx). I preferred that to the high chair we got, which hasn't been used much. But now he has a proper toddler sized table and chairs which he likes to sit at - he shouts "Teatime!" and gets onto the chair ready ;)
cosywolf 26-01-2010, 12:29 Strix, I tried to ring yesterday. My outlaws will have it with me tomorrow.
Thanks Cozy - your missed call this eve is from me!
Does anybody have any opinions on this chair (http://www.kiddicare.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10751&langId=-1&productId=99403)?
Anyway.. i've had a look at the link to the chair, though you won't need it for at least another 7 months so don't get too bogged down with stuff just yet. It doesn't illustrate how it fastens to the 'ordinary dining chair' and with no product reviews it's difficult to say how effective it will be. I've used similar products which have wooden handles/hooks which fit over the chair back and they were very good, i'm sure i've seen some identical one's on-line somewhere. I bought a travel fold-up seat that fits onto dining chairs but to be honest I only used it 2-3 times so gave it away.
Also when thinking about weaning and feeding baby, do you want baby to sit at the table with you or have her own feeding tray? We opted for a wooden high chair with no tray so it pushes up to the table as I like to sit at the table to eat and wanted to include little one. However there have been times when I wish i'd bought a plastic folding high chair with a tray.
We don't often eat at the table to be truthful, to a floor standing chair with it's own tray is probably going to suit us better, besides, when food flies, it doesn't go as far if it starts closer to the floor
I know we've got a dog, but he's obedient enough to be told to leave kids alone when eating - he's not a thief :)
Thanks to Cozy for the rocker with the brake on to do us for the first few months :)
Up until now my son has been in the chicco relax and play bouncer. He is 7 months but outgrown it weight wise. He loved it though as the recline feature made it lie flat and comfy to sleep in. We were lent one of those in hospital when I was too exhausted to co-sleep safely. Strixlet took to it so well we've just ordered her one of her own
The one with the dog on was out of stock, so we've got the Liverpool red (http://www.babydaysdirect.co.uk/products/chicco-soft-relax-bouncer-2010-range/1484/) one instead
