I used CB when it was on 27MHz a.m. In those days the airwaves were self regulating and anyone who used bad language over the air was chastised by the other users.
My President Veep was nicked out of my car and I never replaced it but reported it to the police and had to sign a statement that I was an illegal CB user.
Oh the wonderful days of Mag Mounts, Standing Wave Level meters and dodging the authorities, Great Fun.

Hmmm.....

I don't know about self-regulating.

I was bought up in Nottinghamshire and there was a guy running a 27MHz AM rig 2 doors away, with 100W linear amp.

I was a radio amateur, and as well as getting interference from him I also got the blame for the breakthrough from his transmissions on the neighbourhood TV sets! :)

Took me ages to explain that to people!

I do remember a couple of times being asked why there were all these foreign stations on 27MHz during the high sun-spot years of the late 70s early 1980s.

I moved house before FM took over on 27 - I assume the interference would have decresed then.

To me the idea of using these burners rather defeated the idea of CB and I always told anybody using them to go to Ham.
I preferred to go DXing with the mag mount on the car, usually early Sunday morning when it was quiet, up on the high ground near the Old Harrow on from Gleadless Townend. Its amazing how far you can get on 4 watts when its quiet, although someone would always "Breaker on the side" to me and try to speak to the other breakers, when he couldn't even hear them on his rig. He couldn't grasp the point that I was in an advantageous position on top of a hill, and he was in his bedroom (working on an indoor aerial). He thought that as he could hear me, for some reason the others, coming in from Lincolnshire eg would be able to hear him....Nutcase !!!
------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone remember the Eyeballs that used to come around quite frequently. The Earl Marshall on East Bank Road, the private suite at SUFC on Cherry St, and a great evening out on the canal boat out at Sprotborough.

Does anyone remember Yorkshire Rose, always chatting the young lads up and used to let out in conversation that she had a 42 inch bust. She was always arranging eyeballs with them once they were foaming at the mouth. She once arranged to meet one unsuspecting lad outside the John O' Gaunt, so we jumped in the car to drive past so we could secretly eyeball her. It was true she had a 42 inch bust, but she also had a 46 inch waist and hips as well. Those poor lads must have been frightened to death !!!!!

Back then you needed the written exam AND the Morse test to go on HF, and even then some of the burners used would have been illegal on HF anyway!! :)

You're right about how far you can get on a few watts - I've gotten around the world on a couple of hundred milliwatts using Morse and a few watts using Single Sideband.

I kept a CB rig kicking around for ages, but was never a 'proper' CBer. Was occasionally useful for local comms, though!

Got an Amstrad rig from a place down Darnall when they first became legal ... chopped & changed a few rigs from someone who lived at the Manor Top. Used to park up outside the manor top library some sunday mornings & actually spoke to someone on the Isle O Wight for a couple of mins, before gettin stamped on. My handle was Buccaneer .. though only usually chatted with friends aroung Gleadless / Intake area. Knew Keith & Kev from Manor Top ..... Mick , who lived lower down Prince & Shaun from Swallownest whos handles I cant remember.

davep

The rig in my car had had a mod done to it, so that it would access an extra channel at 27.59125Mhz ie channel 0. This was brilliant as even the AM/FM 120 channel rigs couldn't access this channel. When you threw the switch, the meter used to bottom as though it was broken, and we used it for private conversations as with so few rigs of any description being able to receive it, the nosey sods listening on the side would lose us when we said "take it to the usual". I once got from Gringley-on -the-Hill (near Gainsborough) to the home 20 on a mag mount.

I remember AVON LADY, I used to be STRONGBOW. Too many idiots on CB so packed it in

davep
23-08-2005, 22:40
Yeah, same reason we jacked it in.
When they first came out, CB's were expensive (£70 ish) so only proper people had them, but the market got flooded and prices crashed so every idiot could afford one. Blank keying, music playing etc were all rife. Still used my car one for a bit when we were out of Sheffield, out at Skeggy for instance it was still OK. Got a mobile phone instead as soon as they became halfway affordable - I've had one so long that it needed a number change (it used to start 0589) and was about 8 times as big as my present one !!!!

Harrier CBX. York JCB863. Binatone 5 Star........

I started off with a Rotel 220 and evenually worked my way up to a 240, before settling of an Audioline 340. In a 2/3 year period I bought/swapped that many CB radios I must have gone well into double figures. It used to send my wife daft.

GGs reminds me now of Jolly Gees (John 'O Gaunt pub, Blackstock Road). Used to be a great pub, gone downhill a lot in recent years.
I remember a raid back in '78 or '79 at a pub off Ecclesall Road, where the nice people from the DTI (or whatever they called themselves those days), with police prescence, crowbarred car doors open to remove these disgustingly illegal pieces of radio equipment.
I mean, people being able to talk to each other over fairly short distances, it could have been used for all sorts of other illegal / criminal activities.
It's a good job they didn't get their mitts on the internet, ain't it.

Seen a few handles here I recognise, the one that jumps out the most (besides the above) is lady aries. I dont think i ever met her but I think I spoke to her once or twice and a lot of my CB mates knew her, she was quite notorious as I remember

That was the Psalter Tavern. It was all over the radio next day, because Roger Moffett (Radio Hallam) was in there when the raid took place.

Because of all that publicity I got into CB radio and then went on to take the Radio Amateur exam.

CB in the 8os We all remember the music players the bucketmouths & the dead keyers probably the main reason we are not still on the CB but what about the realy good things we can remember

Nearly all my family were on the CB & it was a very cheap way to communicate between us
I met my 3rd wife (Still married :D ) through CB
Met friends I still communicate with now 20+ years later
If there was any trouble or I needed assistance somebody would be round to help
Didn't have Internet in the early days so CB was a means of talking to people sometimes over great distances especially when 1 went out to the Moors or realy high ground ,still got loads of QSL Cards from Breakers Abroad

Nice to see the thread is still going strong.

I was looking for something in the outhouse earlier, and came across an SWR meter. God, that brings back memories. Must sort that damn outhouse out at some time. If I can find the meter, goodness knows what else might be in there. No rigs, I don't think though.
I know for a fact that the 18ft dipole is still up on our flat roof, though it's horizontal at the moment.
If I can get hold of a rig, might go on and try it, just for the laugh.:)

remember me steve nidgered alertseem to remember me mate rob terminator on your roof in massive winds trying to rescue your aerial!

Hello Nidge - Great to here from you after all these years. As I remember it, Jane had shouted for help over the CB because it looked like my aerials where going to finish up all over Norfolk Park.

I arrived home (from the radio ham class) to find you and Rob up on my roof, in the dark, IN AN HOWLING GALE (gale of 1987), rescuing my aerials from certain disintegration. How you two didn’t get blown off, I’ll never know.

We all woke up next morning to find severe storm damage all over the country, but thanks to you and Rob my aerials and rotators survived relativity intact.

Anyway Nidge, there is talk of having a reunion eyeball for old members and friends of the Steel City Breakers.

It’s just an idea at the moment and was mentioned “in passing”. A few people have shown an interest. If anyone on the forum is interested in a reunion meet pm me.

I'm not surprised at the demise of Jon Pearson (Doctor's dilemma) He was living on borrowed time over 20 years ago.
He had some money left him and he bought a narrowboat called MEGAN.
He had a CB rig on the boat but strangely enough, he didn't have Marine VHF.
He used to winter in Sheffield Basin and then swan off all over the place.

We had a CB when I was about 7 maybe a little younger.. I was a young CB-er!! Step-Dads handle was Rover, and Mum's Babysitter - think I used Buttercup lol - but bear in mind I was a child!!! Is it still possible to use CB radio? I never did but I remember a lot of people being into it back in the day.

How did users learn the language? Was there a glossary available or was it trial and error?

I was a member of Echo Bravo (Eckington CB Club) a very young chap I was too. I remember my sister launching the powerpack across the room AT ME!! because someone on our street had a thunderpole and it was "keying out" our magmount stuck on the radiator!

We upgraded and eventually had a nice rig and I got more into it as I started secondary school (1982). I still see "sudden" kicking about around Eckington.....i remember "choccy bon bon" "thunderbird 3....I still see him around", I was Bananaman and my grandad (god rest his soul) was "daddy long legs".

The one sad thing about the C.B was my sisters boyfriends - she met one called Dave (can't remember his handle)....but he ended up having an affair with my mother. Mind you - she had about 4 affairs and eventually did me a massive favour by buggering off in 1987....3 days before my O Levels.....which I still managed to get 7 A's and 1 B so screw you mum!....I haven't seen her for 21 years :) ....thankfully!

Ahhhh but the CB was great - I remember shouts going out for "tub-o-lard" "gob-o-lard" and loads of others who I'd have loved to meet but never did.

"BREAKER...YOU GOT A 10 : 1 RIG!!"

Is CB radio still popular? I have my old rig up the attic.....I wonder if it still works......it certainly did when I packed it away in 1984.......must be an antique now...anyone still on the airwaves in Sheffield?

If anybody has an old FM rig that works, can i have first refusal please?
I am still using a Binatone 5 Star, that has been moded to 80 ch,and a power tweek, its a superb rig with good looks aswell.
Im a lorry driver, and we still use CB radios to communicate to each other.
Does anybody remember me from High Green 76 - 82.My handle was marathon man,and the CB scene was HUGE back then.
We met at the working mens club, and had treasure hunts eyeballs etc.
I remember Christine from near Angram Bank school, but forget her handle.
Anyway, and CB rig offers to me please, but must be cheep.or free.

PS all legal FM rigs will have a mark on it,a circle with CB27/81 .
That means 27 megahurtz,legalized in `81.
All old illegal AM rigs will only be of use in America now (I THINK).
Strange to think back,it was illegal to own and use a CB,but shops could legally sell them.
My fave shop was IXL opp Kelvin, stacked floor to cieling with CB gear.

Then went on air and found most of conversations were completely moronic!!!!
Cockney Rebel

Yeah, same reason we jacked it in.
When they first came out, CB's were expensive (£70 ish) so only proper people had them, but the market got flooded and prices crashed so every idiot could afford one. Blank keying, music playing etc were all rife. Still used my car one for a bit when we were out of Sheffield, out at Skeggy for instance it was still OK. Got a mobile phone instead as soon as they became halfway affordable - I've had one so long that it needed a number change (it used to start 0589) and was about 8 times as big as my present one !!!!

Rota Motor, avenger, baticock, overdirve, yanky dollar but to name a few. my first radio was a cobra 19gtl AM well before it was legal to own a CB. I was still at school then, but me and a friend would wait until to TV broadcast would go off and the start to call for a copy...this was around 12.00 o`clock midnite....we used to be F##ked when we went to school. All this changed when I left school and CB became legal....I passed my test and off I went with an amstrad 901 strapped under the dash,,,,we had eye balls everywhere...we used to go to Handsworth breakers club every week....those were the days..(happy days too)...just remembered another handle Time bomd,,,any one remember her.....I still own a CB and still use it on occassion, well I say CB it`s a President lincoln....still in tip top condition. I still have a few friends on 27.781..(19) so if anyones on put a call out for me....my handle these days is sparky....10 10 till we do it again....
