Does anyone else get charged seemingly random amounts on the bus?
On the 52 I have paid 1.05,1.20 and 1.30 to go from the university stop by the hicks building to the stop just before co-op on northfield road. Does it vary by weekend/weekday or time of day? Or are the drivers just charging what they feel like? It cant be price increases because today it was 1.05, and it has always been more than that before!
It's usually cheaper on the ones operated by Yorkshire Terrier rather than First, other than that only idea is the drivers might not be clear where you want to get off!

If you are travelling on a First Bus most fares are based on fare stages so should be either 90p for upto 1 mile journey, £1.30 2 mile, £1.60 for 3 mile however within each stage their is a 60p Firsthop for upto 3 bus stops! Terrier bus or 5p or 10p cheaper

thats does not make sense from hemsworth to graves park 1 pounds thirty thats not three miles
No, those fares sound rather out of date.... It is whats advertised on the First website though!

The Big problem is Bus stops are no longer marked with a fare Stage,so have to rely on the driver! On the odd times I do not use my weekly ticket (when buses do not run for 3 days around Christmas) I do ask the driver to show me the fare table if I think they are wrong and if I get a sharp comment back I just say I will be checking with the customer service dept when I get back home!!
The other problem is you could be getting on yards away from the next fare stage where the price band changes.
So lets say for example on the 52 the Fare Stages are High Street(1), Weston Park/Childrens hospital(2), and Crookes (3) so if you boarded at the brookhill roundabout your fare is based as if you had boarded at High St.

I find this! I get the number 30 or 50 to the Hallamshire and can be charged 90p or £1.30. When I challenged the £1.30 guy I was told if I walked to the next bus stop it would be 90p. I don't get it.

Basically this is how it works.... Each bus route is divided into Fare Stages and are roughly one mile apart. If you get on a bus between 'Fare stages' your Fare is based on the Last one it passed and if you are getting off one stop past a 'Fare stage' you are charged to the next one. So your journey in real terms may measure ONE MILE, however due to boarding and alighting between fare stages the charge is for a 2 stage journey of £1.30. However some exceptions are found around Sheffield where routes have been amended or Yorkshire Terrier operate along sections of route.
I wonder how many drivers over look the Sheffield First Hop (3 bus stop) ticket at 60p and charge 90p?
i've heard a rumour that terrier and tracky fares are going up but that mainline one's may be coming down.

According to a 52 board driver (First SYB ) that I have recently talked to about your question the first fare stage after the Crookes Loop is the stop just after the Post Office, he says that YT somtimes have diffrent Fare Stages to First SYB the best thing you can do is next time you get on look on your ticket and it will tell you what Fare Stage you have got on at, yes it is a stupid system and I can remember when I drove the 75/76's there were 3 Fare Stages from the bottom of the Moor to London RD!

I've been charged different fares for identical journeys on the 52 as well!! Think of a number, any number...
