I saved last nights star, to have a look through the job page, circled a few and started ringing up poential employers.

I get through to one lady.
HER "Hello stacy speaking, how may I help"

ME "Hello"

HER "Who is calling"

ME "Paul"

HER "Paul from?"

ME " Paul from Sheffield"

HER "No, (sighs deeply) WHAT company are you calling from" sarcasticly.

At this point I realised that i had cocked up big time already.

ME " I'm calling about the job advertised in the Sheffield Star"

HER "Ohh.............. I dont think you would be suited to this role, Thanks for you interest"

and the hung up.

Any one else done anything totally stupid when ringing up for a job?

please share, and make me feel better about myself
:D

I attended a job interview many years ago for a position I really wanted.

I wasn't feeling well on the day but being so young was too scared to call them to ask for it to be rearranged so just dragged myself there.

On my way out I 'chucked up' in a large potted plant along the corridor....Needless to say I didn't get the job!

Well - as you weren't calling on behalf of a company, you were right to answer as you did.

I have to say her telephone manner leaves something to be desired though

To be honest with a battleaxe on reception such as her your better off without the job!

Do you think she may be filtering the calls to ensure one of her friends/relatives is the only candidate? :suspect:

Try applying in person or writing ;)

I made a similar call last yr about a job but the person who answered the phone was really nice. She put me straight thru to the appropriate person when she realised I was going for a job. A week later I got the job.

Make your first words, whatever they say -

"Hi, I'm <insert name here> and I'm really interested in the position of <insert vacancy here> with your company, I hope you can help me"

Who says it was the receptionist?

He might have got their director of global communications on the line.

You never know if you are speaking with a receptionist or the MD. Make like you are speaking to the MD, be polite, courteous and volunteer information - don't make them interrogate you for it.

And have a pen and paper to hand and note down people's names and stuff.

It sounds obvious, but being able to greet people by name at the interview, and remember the conversation you had with hem (even though you made 20 calls that day) counts for a lot.

Best of luck with that, speaking as a jobseeker myself.
