This started 3 days ago.

Every time I try to move any file by clicking and dragging, Windows immediately says it has encountered a problem and needs to close. It asks me to send an error report.
Then Dr Debugger says it has a problem and needs to close and send an error report.

Then the laptop just stops working.

I have removed anything that I may have downloaded since a week before this started in case I imported a bug. (but I've got Macafee so I'm protected).

I have done 2 system restores back to a month ago.

Please can anyone help? I can't even move a picture in the same file.

What should I do???

Okay so first I have to say that I'm very biased against McAfee because I've had some bad experiences with it.

Did you download / change / install anything before it started?

It might just be that there are some physical problems with disk or memory.

Firstly, what version of Windows are you running?

Secondly, run up Explorer, click on My Computer and check how much disk space you have left on drive C: Newer versions of Windows will tell you when they're running out of disk but the older ones (95/98 etc) are not so good.

What I'd do is to go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and remove McAfee. Then (if you can) go to www.grisoft.com and download the free virus checker (AVG Free V7) and run it.

Try running with that for a bit and see if it makes any difference.

Might be worth a try.

Before performing a repair install it is worth running the system file checker. This will scan your computer for any corrupt files and attempt to repair/replace them.
Type sfc /scannow in to the run box. Note the space after sfc.

I've tried all suggestions apart from this one so far. Still no joy, so at the risk of sounding like a dullard (too late), how do you reinstall windows over itself?

* Insert the XP CD and boot to it
* When you see " To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER", go ahead and press ENTER
* You will now see an option to repair Windows by pressing "R". Do not select this option - it will only take you to the Recovery Console which is not what we want to do. Instead, choose to continue the installation
* When you see the license agreement, press F8 to agree
* On the next screen make sure your current XP installation is selected and then press "R" to repair XP
* At this point XP will begin to install on top of itself, replacing damaged, missing or altered system files. Follow the instructions on the remaining screens to complete the Repair Install. It will look very much like a normal (new) OS installation.

If all goes well your repaired XP installation will remain intact, keeping your personalized settings and installed programs as they were. You will lose all your windows updates though.
