There are only private holiday companiers that do day trips there. I'd suggest train for a one way visit.

Midland Mainline do a package, assuming you travel on the right day:

Midland Mainline do a day out package on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. You get the train from Sheffield to Derby then a coach is laid on to transfer you to the park. The ticket price also includes admission. Advance booking required.

The other route by rail would be with Central Trains to Uttoxeter (which involves changing trains at Derby). Once you get to Uttoxeter you join a scheduled bus service to Alton Towers, the number 32A operated by First.

Finally, Wilfreda Beeghive, a bus company based in Doncaster, operate a daily coach to Alton Towers which picks up in Sheffield.

You can buy an all in one Train, Bus and Park ticket from the station. (Using Central Trains) Its about £ £40 and you save a small amount on buying seperately.
Looking at the First PMT website, a FirstDay ticket is £3.40 before 9am and £3.20 after. I assume a single ticket is slightly less.
Train fare Sheffield to Uttoxeter is £16 single or £20 return before 9am, after 9am a Wayfarer ticket is available at £7.60.
Or, as mentioned above, you can get a train/bus/admission package for £40, this can be bought at the station on the day (or in advance if you want a seat reservation on the train).

Thank you very much for your advices, especially andyC.
i would be going tommorrow.
see ya.
The best route I found to alton was to catch the train to uttoxeter then catch a bus from utoxxeter station up to Alton Towers.
Bus comes every hour.
