View Full Version : Laptop help needed please!
Heyup
Our lass has had her laptop since may now and last night when I was on the internet on it, it seemed to just turn itself off and then would not come back on again!!
When you press the power on button, the power light comes on for a second and then dissapears... but wont boot the PC.
Its a Packard Bell (this is what I get for saying that I always buy Packard Bells on an earlier topic!) Easynote E2316 from PC World.
Can anyone advise what this could be.. I'm thinking maybe the battery is knackered before I take the trip to PC World tonight??
Thanks everyone.
Skatiechik 12-08-2005, 12:24 Take it back if it is still under warranty, which I guess it will be if only brought in May.
You suggest it may be the battery, but does it work on the mains fine?
RazorSHarp 12-08-2005, 12:45 does it still power up with the power cable attached?
PSA do a cheap 3rd party battery option

Hey everyone- the laptop does not power up at all, the only thing that happens is the power charging light stays on when the charger is plugged in and also when you press the power button the power light comes on and then goes off straight away.
UPDATE:
The laptop still wont turn on so I've called the PC World servicecall phone number and the bloke said its probably the power convertor gone inside the laptop.. can I take it to the Meadowhell Retail park outlet.. so off we trot.
We go to the PC World store, they check the laptop, say Oh yep its dead, have you tried charging the laptop???
No **** says I - of course I have, then they try the power cable which is working fine.. still nothing from the laptop.
The geeky kid then tells us to call the serviceline again, for a guy to come out to our home to fix the problem, if they cannot fix it at our home then they will send it away to be fixed via courier.
Fine says I .. off we trot back home.
I now called the servicecall line again asking for a bloke to come out and repair said laptop only to be told that they dont send anyone out... we have to send the laptop out via courier.. down goes the phone in a huff at my end.
I rang PC World back and asked to speak to geeky kid in the PC World store and told him I want to take the laptop back then, for a new one- apparently I cant do this as its been 3 months, it had to be 30 days.
What to do peeps?? My blood is boiling now.
limpetboy 12-08-2005, 19:14 I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with thelaptop, but heed this cautionary tale kids. PC World are evil, evil I say! They should not be trusted. Down with PC World!
PC World: Update - 13/8/2005
So.. we've rang PC World and got nowhere.. we went back into the meadowhall store today.. the lie we got told today will stick in my memory forever..
So we are in PC World @ 9.30am this morning.
We saddle up to the counter, explain the whole comedy to them.. to which the kid takes the laptop for testing in the back lab room, comes back and says quite happily 'Oh yeah! Its definitely a problem with the laptop, but as its an end of the line model we will swap it for a new updated one for you as they have none left of our model' -- we got very happy at this point thinking we are entitled to a newer faster model!!
So we leave the laptop in the shop for them to backup the data on it for us to return at 5pm.. we head home happy as larry!
Hours pass- 5pm comes... we are once again at the front desk of PC World, Meadowhall.
We take the receipt which the guy wrote on with a ref number for the new laptop, we ask for the new laptop and the backup disc to be met with - you've guessed it boys and girls - blank looks.. The conversation went thus:
Me:
'Ive come to collect my replacement laptop and my backup dvd please!'
Store Bloke:
Erm... who told you, you were getting a replacement laptop?
Me:
The guy who was here earlier, I cant remember his name though, but he did write on my receipt about the laptop!
SB:
He's told you wrong- you only get replaced laptops inside the 30 days mark.
Me:
Stunned silence and also anger building up inside myself and the missus- I was told I was getting a replacement laptop, why am I now not when you said to comeback at 5pm to pick it up!
SB:
Sorry, the bloke probably didnt know what he was on about!
Well at this point- myself and the missus were totally deflated and ****** off and called for the manager, explained it to him and promptly received £30 in vouchers to sooth the problem.
The laptop we have conceided will now have to be taken away to be repaired.. and 'if in 28 days - they cannot fix it-- then we can come in for a new laptop'
****ing liars and charlatans... do PC World have a set course that every employee takes to lie to customers??

I had a similar problem with a compaq laptop. I had to press the hard reset button for 30s (on the compaq it is a pin sized slot that you need a pin to push into). Of course you dont have a compaq so maybe this wont work, but if you cant find another way it might be aorth a try (disclaimer: not my fault if this does something nasty to your laptop!)
I think you should take a step back from this one. The guys who work there are only human and the 'geeky kid' you refer to probably knows how to work PCs much better than he knows the intricacies of company policy.
PCs go wrong. Laptops go wrong even more. FAR worse things happen when traversing customer support than this minor inconvenience.
PC World - The saga continues
14-8-2005
This is turning into the neverending story now..
We left the laptop with PC Poo yesterday and asked them to send it away to be fixed by a qualified!! engineer.
They said ok-- so you would have thought the matter had finished there eh? WRONG.
Now we get a call today -sunday morning- from Gavin at PC World telling us the engineers dont want to take it away as they wont be able to fix it!!
This was the last straw.. we went back to PC Poo (4 times now) and asked to speak to the manager where I proceeded to loose my rag and tell Steve the supposed manager in the store to get it sorted.. to which he told me he would personally make sure it gets to an engineer.
So the laptop is still with them, and they now have 26 days to get the laptop repaired then I can demand a new one by rights according to PC Poo.
If this does not get sorted I told them, I will be going to Citizens Advice - My solicitors and also Trading standards and if need be- local press as well.. so watch this space.
Thanks for all the help everyone on this as well.
:)

I doubt if he can do either if PC World is anything to go by.

Sorry, but they should fix it straight away no hassles. It isnt a minor inconvenience. It is unacceptable poor levels of customer service.
Pete1024 15-08-2005, 10:16 Oh dear, this is not good. What would you expect from PC world & packard bell though? I hope you didn't pay any extra for the 'warranty' they gave you. On the other hand they have to provide bad customer service for people who don't buy 'extended warranties' or else they wouldn't sell any.
If you can manage to swap you vouchers for cash, we'll (Very PC hillsborough) happily sell you an acer laptop, they come with a 1yr collect and return international warranty as standard. Which means acer pick it up off of you (at their expense) and get it back to you (usually with a 5 day turnaround), no going to the store and argueing (ahh. bliss). But if you wanted to bring it back to the store, we'd handle the collect and return for you.
What were you thinking with buying packard bell anyway?

I know, I know, I should be whipped from going to that wretched place but I havent had any other problems from my Packard Bell PC's so I thought this would be no different- such is my luck :)
We didnt take the extended warranty though.. I thought it was a really big con and too expensive for me.
I'll look into getting a replacement first and if not we'll gladly check you out for laptops.. I know the mrs wants one on finance though so I dunno if you do that? Thats the main reason we went to PC Poo in the first place.
Cheers for the comments :)

any chance of a link to your shop at all
goldenfleece 16-08-2005, 13:11 PC world and any store like that are a waste of time and space.
I buy all my office PCs online direct from NOVATECH....superb service, they listen to ALL problems and fix them as fast they can with no arguments......home PC's or office PC's, give them a try, superb service...
Dell are good for laptops, they offer finance, and if it breaks, its on site warranty, so a dell engineer will visit you and fix it.
I know of someone who phoned the dell support line at 8am in the morning, and an engineer had been, fixed it and gone by 3pm the same day, You dont get service better then that (unless your a business customer, and get 4 hour call out like me :P)
Joel
Well the nightmare is nearly at an end..
The laptop is with PC World now and this saturday- I will be able to waltz into the store and demand a new replacement laptop to end this ridiculous farce once and for all!
PC World havent send my laptop away to be fixed yet either and they have nearly had it a month now!
Pseudonym 11-09-2005, 13:20 ANGELUS... And the result of your Saturday waltz into PCW was???
Inquiring minds wish to know! :D
