View Full Version : Roxy to re-open
got told that roxys has been bought by the owners of club wow and is going to be opening (not sure when) wey hey the return of the famous grab a granny nights........having said that i am now probably older than the grannies :(
Classic Rock 19-12-2003, 09:40 I'd be astonished if this happened. Roxy was owned by the people that own Wembley. I looked into this as part of my quest to find another pub. I enquired as to its availability and plans were either about to be agreed or had been agreed to change the building into a hotel.
I contacted the church who used to rent it from the proprietors and they said it was in a terrible state of repair. The Fire Service/Health and Safety came in and literally shut it down and condemmed it.....wiring/roof was dangerous. They got quotes on how much it would cost to repair and they're talking over a million.
This is why plans were being put forward to redo the whole site.
If something has happened since, then I'd be keen to know the motif.
Last rumour i heard was Kingdom was going to move in when their current site is demolished for the retail quarter development.
Guess they might have had cold feet with the hotel idea - after all with the new peace gardens hotel being built nearby and the new hotel near the Boardwalk there would be a lot of competition.
Also I suppose a company with a big chain of nightclubs would be able to have a multi million renovation budget
fnkysknky 19-12-2003, 13:42 I've heard both stories - Wow and Kingdom - either way I know I'll be staying away :)
DaBouncer 19-12-2003, 14:43 Why break the new routine of a life time... turn it into city centre apartments!

Got to agree with you there.
tinajones 20-12-2003, 12:23 I used to go down to Roxy Rock Night on a Monday and it was the best night ever - but then i was 15! Seriously though, if the modernised it and got some decent nights on it could be a top venue. I'm thinking a big jungle rave...
Ahhhh - rock night. At it's best when only once a month. Met my wife there - athough the first time she met me I can't remember :headbang:
Tuesday mornings at college were terrible :)
i also met my wife there 19 years ago........should have gone to romeo's that night. :)
bassman-x 04-01-2004, 21:11 I had many happy and hazy nights at the Wednesday Student night back in the day, seems llike such a long time ago now...
Anyhow roxy has had it's day and they should pull it down really, it's a complete eyesore, they could get rid of the surrounding buildings while they're at it too.
noseyrosie 05-01-2004, 21:03 Oh I don't know, I find it quite novel having the 'Roy Disco' to show to non-locals. And has anyone else noticed the photo of said place in the inlay card for Muse's 'Origin of Symmetry' album? (check their website) http://www.muse.mu

yes I had noticed that, I got quite excited when I first saw it!
It is a novel building, but one that has had its day, there is so much more that could be done with the site that it is built on and I would hardly call it an attractive building!
Oh my god! Roxy's used to be so much fun. It does seem a bit sad that when i went I was one of the underage wipper-snappers, and now i'd qualify for grab-a-grannie!
It did seem that the whole clientele were either under-age, over-age or extremely greasy men. And the dresscode was either a ralph lauren shirt, or a mini dress (as much flesh on display as possible). Ah, those were the days. I'd love to see it open again, I wouldn't mind a younger man...

Not a lots changed then - oh maybe a burberry hat or two
It seems they are doing a little work on the roxy but does anyone know what its for?? Just noticed this today.
Its time they did something with it!

Was about to ask the very same, there's scaffolding all around the roof with a rubbish chute. Are they just re-felting the roof do you think, or is this the start of something much, much bigger. I sure hope so :D

i'm not sure what they are doing in there but the noisey buggers keep waking me up:( about 5.30am yesterday

I met my wife at the Roxy too.... Rock night on a monday. What a top night that used to be. Ho hum.
yeh, brilliant nights.
Big hair, tight spangly clothes, big hair, great music, big hair.
*just remembering*
Never ever been to Roxy - I was stil in nappies in its hayday.
I heard that Heaven & Hell wanted to take roxy's over as they're looking for a place in Sheffield.
princess_rockchick 30-06-2004, 18:23 Will there have a Monday night Rock night on, if this goes ahead?
well the scofold has come down,no noise this morning but still no news on the place,it was probably pikeys nicking the lead :)
snowboarder 01-07-2004, 11:53 Been asking some questions and cant find anyone who will confirm if the club has been sold for nightclub use. As stated above, the refurbishment costs will be extortionate on such a limited life building. The wiring, plumbing and general condition of the building was shot when I last worked there in 1997, very dangerous. I lost track of the number of times there were electrical faults with either the PA or the lighting or the bar equipment. And there is a hell of a lot of wiring in a place that size. I see it only being used for non public entertainment purposes. Club Wow? no chance.....they lost a fortune on the centertainment complex and are in no position to produce a million pounds.
Anyone opening that place would need a complete fortune to upgrade it for such a limited potential market. The days of these big old concrete sleazy clubs have long gone which is why Roxy closed down anyway. The days of BIG clubs full stop have also gone as far as the UK is concerned which is why Club Wow failed....nothing to do with the location....it was simply too big and too crap. The succesful clubs now tend to be much smaller organizations and not the anonymous barns of the 70's.
If it opens as a club again I will eat my own buttocks deep fried in greek garlic butter and served with frogs legs and octopus.
snowboarder 04-07-2004, 12:01 Apparently I will now have to eat my own buttocks as described above. It appears KINGDOM have purchased the venue and will move there later in the year..........
now where is the tabasco sauce?

Oh Please for the love of god NOOOOOOO!!!!!
i have had plenty a snog in roxys some good times there some bloody sh*t ones to ne girls out there remember kissing me god there might all be dead now.......scary
royjames 11-07-2004, 18:08 I also had some good nights in that place especielly grab a granny certainly got my share of love in there.
Lets hope it re opens like it used to be.
snowboarder 12-07-2004, 08:28 No it will be refurbed inside out. I have heard the interior was stripped out anyway leaving a bare shell of a building. It will cost them millions........millions...
Still KINGDOM is a chav paradise.........Sheffield will have no problem filling it!!!
I wonder what the timeline will be on that place....it surely must not stand chance of being ready before 2005.....the amount of work will be fantastic to being it up to modern safety standards now. There is no disabled access or lifts to the upper levels which is a requirement for all new venues with a public entertainments licence since the early 90's. The way round that is to rip out the upper levels and just have one tall room..........not big enough though really....not room for enough chavs.
royjames 12-07-2004, 11:34 Do you know what the capacity will be when it re opens?
snowboarder 12-07-2004, 13:19 ROZYS used to have the biggest capacity in Sheffield when it was open, 2,500 or something very high. No idea what it might be in the future.....

kingdoim wont be moving there/........
why wud they swap a good clubbing location (near west street and division street) for a much inferior location..... not gonna happen really
WOW??? as far as im aware there company are a major one and could easily afford to purchase the venue and refurb..... The works (a great club from experience) is one of the big chain.....
as for heaven and hell............ ROCK ON
they cud afford it, and wud go down a treat
Might have to E-mail Peter Clarke and find out what the latest is on bringing Heaven & Hell to Sheffield.

I though there was going to be MAJOR redevelopemnt all round Cole Bros/Barkers Pool in next few years - so it would make a lot of sense for Kingdom to move - not that I'm ever likely to go there!

can i grab her please :)
When will they knock down this forsaken building!!!
The sooner the better.. Does the Church still lease it or have they seen the light and shifted on ?
Maybe the ghosts of the Roxy prevent it, the spirits of a thousand wasted evenings.
I heard somewhere that they were going to use the site to build another Adsetts Centre for Hallam Uni...
Maybe the Classic Rock Bar could relocate there!
Quintain Estates own the site http://www.quintain-estates.com try asking them what plans they have for it :)
evildrneil 01-09-2004, 08:06 Hopefully they will do something with it soon - it has all the style and grace of a giant public urinal (and probably much the same function at the moment!)
Classic Rock 01-09-2004, 08:48 This has been covered on threads elsewhere. Can someone link to them cos I don't know how to do it.
Whatever becomes of it I'll always remember the then new age TopRank which is what the now dump used to be before the Madness brgan.
...but ONLY as I was being paid for it!!! The things we do for money eh? Still, feb to june-ish 1997, every night they opened I served you dunkards and vagabonds, whipper snappers, grannies, greasy men....ahhh, those were the days.
I was MOST amused to hear it had become a church! I saw some very ungodly, or perhaps, very 'natural' acts in there....
Whatever they do to it...please god let them sort out the uniforms...at least the WORST I had to endure was a stripy waistcoat...and dickie bow...I started just AFTER the beach party nights where the staff had to wear bikinis and grass skirts....how very classy.
Whatever they do to it, I dont plan to go unless I'm being PAID for it..and I want more money this time! ;)
HELLO
IT MIGHT HAVE ALREADY BEEN ASKED BUT DOE'S ANYONE NOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE ROXY RE-OPENING. I HEARD A RUMOUR,
THANKS
What's the rumour?
And please don't shout - the moderator doesn't like it ;)
nothing for definate, probably just idle chat.
But a place like that can't remain empty! can it?
If it was to re-open i think it would be as busy as ever
see if anybody else nows anything
Already been discussed here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5392&highlight=The+ROXY)
bean55788 26-11-2004, 23:43 the place shud get knocked down its a sight 4 sore eyes

Why did the Roxy's close?
Everyone keeps saying that it would make money and obviously if someone is going to refurb the building it must be able to make a profit.
Any ideas?
bassman-x 29-11-2004, 10:57 bulldozer
best thing for it
