just wondering if the high intensity short bursts of excercise really work or is it better to stick to traditional methods of losing weight?
thanks

Walking a lot and eating a little less; you can't go wrong.

seeing as pretty much all professional football teams use it as the basis for their pre-season training, then I'd guess that it works. Both Fartlek and HIIT are proven methods.

Like any attempt to lose weight, it's best to mix things up so that your body continues to work hard. The body becomes accustomed to training patterns and gets used to the workouts, making them more efficient so you don't shift as many calories.

H.I.I.T works of course but I would have thought it does more to improve your anaerobic fitness level and cardio then help you to lose weight; you want low intensity and longer time for dropping the pounds.

^^ Wrong. HIIT burns calories post-workout for up to 6x longer than normal aerobic exercise. You can acheive the same overall calorie defecit with 15 minutes of (really hard) HIIT as you do with 60 minutes of continuous low-intensity aerobic exercise.

But, for HIIT to work, you need to be mentally strong and really dig deep. Its horrible, draining, deeply unpleasant stuff. But it works.

it does take alot of mental ability like. keepin to a strict diet and doing more exercise than you do now will work without doubt!!

?? No.

You need to do cardio, something to bring up your heart rate. This will burn more calories. Running is a good one, youll need running shoes though.

You probably dont need to eat less either, just eat healthier.

If you google "does long slow cardio work", or something similar, you will see that most thinking these days is that it is good for building stamina, but not fat loss. That probably explains why you can go to a gym and see people who look out of shape run on a treadmill for an hour without breaking sweat, they have built up stamina but still look overweight.

Not at all, you would be surprised how many gym instructors and personal trainers still advise people to do long, slow, cardio for weight loss.

Just follow common sense. Sounds easy but not many people do. That means eat fruit and veg, don't eat junk food (or as little as possible) and do exercise. Try to cut down on refined sugar and saturated fat.

You can remove a lot of saturated fat by taking red meat and butter from your diet, have chicken and fish instead. Start checking the labels on things, it might surprise you at first how many commercial foods are made mostly of refined sugar (i.e. all sweets, soft drinks, cheap lager, alcopops, sweetened cereals, even a lot of drinks marketed as health drinks). Once you've weaned yourself of these items they taste disgusting, people only eat / drink these things because they're addicted to sugar imo. Also, most artificial sweeteners are not at all good for you. Alcohol is okay in moderation, very bad in excess.

There's no reason you can't lose weight just training at home.

What's been working for me lately (general fitness and moderate muscle mass gain, but I imagine I'd be losing weight if I was overweight) has been...

Diet

Whey protein shake for breakfast and before/after exercise
Grilled half chicken, rice and salad for lunch
Apples, bananas, grapes, raw veg and dark chocolate for snacks
Medium sized meal for tea, usually chicken based
Regular drinks of water / brewed green tea / red grape juice

Exercise

20-90 minutes calisthenics / resistance training daily
1-2 hour cagefighting classes 1-3 times a week
2-6 hour Parkour sessions 1-3 times a week
Jog 2 miles 3-7 times a week

But you've got to find a lifestyle that works for you, bearing in mind the points at the top. Don't expect overnight results from any diet or exercise regime (but do expect to see a difference after a few months), and push yourself hard but not so hard that you give up. Personally I'd rather mix up different types of training rather than do just cardio or just HIIT or just weights etc., but at the end of the day any form of exercise is better than none.
