View Full Version : Huge wild black dog or wolf seen on Roscoe Bank, Stannington
goldenfleece 11-08-2005, 15:05 Walking along this dark road last night we were disturbed by a MASSIVE black animal leaping across the road and into the woods, carrying what looked like a dead domestic rabbit in its mouth. It was about 8ft infront of us and came out of nowhere. It was simply ENORMOUS and the biggest 'dog' I have ever seen, if it was a dog. It ignored us but crashed down into the woods making a real noise, must have weighed a ton!
One of the locals on the road today told me that there are local rumours of wolves in the woods that lead down to Rivelin Valley, but I am not exactly convinced. However, this huge black animal was at least six feet long and 2ft high, not including its legs, and had a long narrow snout and yellow eyes. Any ideas?
Oh, I may have had 3 pints of real ale but that is neither here nor there, this was seen by TWO persons.......and someone in the Roscoe Bank area has lost a pet rabbit, unless it was wild...
My uncle used to own the large nursery on Roscoe Bank that went right down to the riiver. He said he had seen wolves down there when he was stoking the boiler at night. I thought he was just having a laugh.
goldenfleece 11-08-2005, 15:09 This old man who was walking his dog today said many people thought there were wolves down there. I did not believe it....I think I wont be walking down that road at night anymore in case it decides to change its diet!!!
It was gone so fast did not have time to get the phone camera on it........3 seconds and it was gone....HUGE!!!
You know the realy steep path/trail that goes down the valley side from Rosco Bank down to the ruined mill and the bridge on the river bottom, well that silted up dam you walk down to is supposed to be haunted (according to my grandad) by someone who was killed in the mill when a grindstone exploded.
Just thought I'd add that.
Happy walking.
I've seen one! It had huge teeth with dripping blood and a growl like the creaking of the gates of hell. It was carrying a deer - abject fear frozen on its face - in its mouth.
goldenfleece 11-08-2005, 15:20 I walk up that way at night sometimes in the Summer as well.....that will have to be crossed off the map me thinks.........ghosts AND wolves....now thats too much even for me.......
That ruined mill is realy, realy creepy though, more so than anywhere else in Riverlin, I've gone from the bottom to the top of that path at a sprint before when I was a kid thinking I'd heard something.
I think someone from the Paranormal Society needs to check out the area to see whats going on.
Also there seems to have been a lot of big cat sightings around the area again, over the past couple of weeks.
Interesting indeed.
Angelus, you go down and check it out tonight, and report back tomorrow.
If we don't hear from you we will know it's all true.
I can reveal what the big black dog-like animal is ..... err its a big black dog. Not a ghost, not a wolf, just a dog. Why do people need to make up this nonsense?
It's a satanic hell-hound at best or a warewolf.

I am at present highly medicated from my migraine tablets the doc has given me today so I'm sure I will be a force to be reckoned with against a big black hell-hound!! :)
I'll proper kick its ass.. either that or I'd make a lovely after dinner treat for it.

Would you like to go and prove us all wrong then?
How about it, take a camera and a sharp stick while you go.
See anything black? Give it a sharp poke and see what happens!
:)
goldenfleece 11-08-2005, 16:07 THIS WAS NO DOG......THROW A STICK FOR THIS BEAST AND IT WOULD HAVE YOUR LEG OFF!!!!
There was a guy with a house very near Roscoe Bank who had what appeared to be a wolf when I was in my early teens. Could have been a Malamute or something.
I doubt there's a wild wolf out there....there would be multiple sheep and American back-packers missing. I think people would notice that.
Anyway - best stay on the path. STAY ON THE PATH!!!!
Splodge_CRB 11-08-2005, 16:34 Yeah...it's a well known fact wolves and supernatural beasts don't go on paths!
Take some rosemary and garlic and a pinch of oregano with you too

We've had many a night ride out around that area. The first time i went out i was lagging behind and I'm sure i saw some eyes in the woods on the left, just before where 'The Cabin' used to be on Moscar hill.
Maybe i was lucky that night *Gulps*
naughtyelf 11-08-2005, 23:44 oh joy its the boring wolf story it was a dog you will have seen thats if you have not made it up.

Don't be fooled, it may appear like a simple black dog, but in reality its only aim to remove your oesophagus in one bite, leaving you to be picked at by crows like rotting carrion. i wouldn't take this too lightly!

RazorSHarp 12-08-2005, 07:59 Dont' Wolves live in Packs? If so wouldn't there be a few more running round? and if so in an area like Rivelin Valley I'm sure a few more people would have seen it.
If it is "big and black...Weighs a ton" maybe it was a small horse or a cow... or maybe a bear!!!!
:loopy:
Sounds like a seriously overweight Rottweiler to me!

I'm not sure how you could fight off a warewolf with a bouquet garni ?
... and if it's suppoed to be 'big and black' then it's not a wolf, 'cos wolves are neither of these things.
goldenfleece 12-08-2005, 08:15 Definitely could not defend yourself with a stick of rosemary of whatever it was......the stick required would be at least 6 inches thick, 4ft long and have iron spikes hammered into the end! This was no household pet out for a quick rummage in the nearest rabbit hutch for some late supper, this was a WOLF!
Apparently wolves are not supposed to be hostile to man.....or so I have heard. They are rather anti- social creatures who prefer to stay well away from people unless they are cornered...in which case the diet of a wolf can change from small 4 legged animals and rodents to those of the larger 2 legged variety!
Sounds like a Padfoot to me!
RazorSHarp 12-08-2005, 08:20 And I've heard that the woods near Loxley/Wisewood are home to a small population of dinosaurs !!!!
Perhaps it was a velocaraptor, they are quite big and fast ?
pitsmoorlad 12-08-2005, 08:37 I think that the authorities (armed with a revolver loaded with silver bullets) should check the residents for hairy palms and a tendency to act a little strange on a full moon. Come to think of it that could be my wife.... although she also acts strangely on a new moon, half moon, crescent moon and no moon. I'd better finish as here she comes nowooooooooooo
I once saw a very hairy man having a pint in the Riverlin Hotel, I thought nothing of it at the time, but I now remember it was a full moon.
I once pulled a full moon after a few beers in town. There may have been some hairy people nearby.
RazorSHarp 12-08-2005, 09:11 I know a guy called Harry Moon.. Maybe it was him !!! and he'd just miss spelled his name.

StillWaters 09-09-2005, 00:04 It's true! Check out the hilarious 'confessions of One Eyed Nick the comedy lion tamer' articles at http://www.bigcats.org.uk/catrelease.html In case that link doesn't work, here's an extract:
A FORMER lion tamer has admitted he released a panther and a cougar into the countryside near Sheffield in the 1970s. Leslie Maiden, who once owned more than a dozen big cats, said he released the animals off the A57 Snake Pass in Derbyshire.
He also said people in Sheffield had released big cats on the moors. "I released a panther 26 years ago on to the moors on the Pennines at Snake Pass," Mr Maiden, of Cradley Heath, near Dudley, West Midlands, told a BBC regional news programme.
"It was miles from anywhere. It was a couple of days after releasing a cougar," he said.
More than 100 leopards and pumas are thought to be roaming the British countryside. Big cat experts believe the animals are the offspring of beasts released by owners in the 1970s after the introduction of stringent new laws governing wild and dangerous animals.
Mr Maiden, 63, known locally as "One-eyed Nick", added: "I’ve always been an animal lover. But people came to me with the animals saying they would have to put them down. I had no option."
Fellow big cat owner Lewis Foley, 61, who kept the animals at a menagerie with Mr Maiden, disclosed that a friend of his in Coventry had set a panther loose in Nottinghamshire in 1974. Mr Foley said: "He knew about the new laws and didn’t want it put down."
Friends in Sheffield also set big cats loose on the Pennines, he added. In 1994 a man walking his dog in Todwick, between Sheffield and Worksop, was frightened by a black creature he said resembled a panther. In 1997 an armed response unit was mobilised in South Yorkshire by police after reports of a black panther in the Masbrough area of Rotherham.
Give me approx. Grid Ref and i'll go check it out if you like?
So, the black creature is not the Hound Of The Baskervilles then?
Awwww....
bigredbox 09-09-2005, 08:51 Arrrrrrrooooooo:)
Would'nt be surprised in the slightest....how many folk used to keep "wild" animals years ago.
I recall someone on city road walking a tiger cub, must have been mid 70's. Does anyone else remember this.
If one escaped from a private collection, would they admit it?
happy hunting folks, would love to see any pics, they may be easier to spot on a full moon, I guess you'd hear them.
goldenfleece 10-09-2005, 10:45 went over wiyth my digital camera the other night and only managed to photograph a crushed Stella can.....the wolf maybe has gone into hibernation????
Internetowl 10-09-2005, 12:51 You need a full moon to see the Wolf...

Q: Why did the werewolf visit Brighton?
A: He was on howl-iday.
Albatross 11-09-2005, 06:26 It could have been Count Dracula, he is supposed to have swam ashore at Whitby as a BIG BLACK DOG. He's had plenty of time to get down to Rivlin by now
On a more serious note.(B flat in a minor 7th)
There's a breed called a Bernese mountain dog used to pull carts and herd cattle in the swiss mountains. They have a similar colouring to a rotti but are about as tall as a great dane and heavier built.
Hi All,
I live on Roscoe Bank and i can confirm that there arent any wolves here!! Although there is a big black dog that lives in a house near here, it may have escaped but i did se it with the owner a couple of days ago.
There are loads of foxes and other wild life around here but no wolves of big cats im afraid!!

Wolves aren't big. Many domestic dogs are larger than wolves.
camouflage 15-09-2005, 19:39 The guy at Roscoe bank did have a pet wolf, grey with yellow eyes,my brother used to feed it stew meat around 1979-80ish:gag:
cloza1991 18-09-2005, 11:57 i once saw something in the woods at rivelin when i was younger on a bike ride with my dad.

i havent been down for years though.

This is so true!
Especially if it was a cross between an alsation and a giant breed - would explain temperament and size.
Story about 1970s and releasing animals is interesting though.
but, given the fact there are people that live there who have said there are no wolves, I would go with them!
Remember, dogs can look even bigger in different contexts - I remember being chased up my road by a HUGE black dog that jumped over a 5ft wall after me. That seemed very big!
But even if it is there, they are shy, retiring animals so I wouldn't be that worried! I'd be more worried if they were sort of cross breed from the 1970 releases, a few different sizes and temperament could create a nasty dog!

The dog was a cross between a Lurcher and Irish Wolfhound. He had a black coat and was called Shep.
His owners lived on Liberty Close, just above Roscoe Bank and Shep roamed the neighbourhood freely. Shep died in 1975 but all that met him always commented on his wolf like appearance.
He may have fathered countless offspring in his time so doubtless there are still dogs that have his genetic inheritance.

I find this topic very interesting because I live in northern British Columbia where wolves are very common along with black bear, grizzly bear, moose, elk etc etc. I am originally from Sheffield and know the area you're in. I don't think it would be a wolf because wolves range for sustenance and don't stay in one location for long because they eventually consume all the animals they prey on. Also the range has to be a very large area, even in game-rich areas like BC, to sustain even one wolf. I don't know if the area you are in would be a large enough range. The previous comment that wolves are 'loners' is also true. Even in packs they stay away from human contact.
If it is a dog it could be a Newfoundland Dog. At 27 to 29 inches in height and weighing 130 to 150lbs it would fit the size description. Perhaps someone in the area keeps one. They are a fairly popular breed in Canada. There is a (not much) smaller european cousin called a Landseer, but they are not usually pure black.
I t may have been the Loch Ness Monster having a well earned break in Yorkshire:)

Cliff Clavin 24-12-2005, 18:38 Apart from its size, it could've been a Wolf. Along with Bears, Wolves were native to this country, untill hunted to exstinction. Maybe a small sect of Wolves survived???
