Yeah well done Michael,
I'm sure you're more bothered and proud of the century you have just scored in Manchester against the Aussies in the ashes test.

And Indeed I am a graduate of that very poly!

I wasn't slagging the institution, just the lack of value of honorary degrees. If his side wins the ashes, [the greatest prize for any Englishman or Austrailian in sport] then he would deserve an honorary degree.

And possibly a nighthood..
A Kiss from the Queen

and a pound from every single "Right Thinking" englishman
Mine's already in an envelope just in case.

LOL - nor me, just trying to wind up some soap-dodgers!!!

I hope he takes it, burns it, and gives it to Ponting as a runners-up prize!

If he gets a first I'll be well miffed.

I am abit sick of this honary degree stuff especially those who get lots of degrees given to them. Do they also get lots of debt with it?

Don't be jelous of honarary Degrees, they are worthless and only done to give a bit of glamour to a very boring ceremony. In academic circles they are often treated as an embarrasment.

Surely ye jest? :suspect:

Surely the greatest prize for any English (or welsh) or Auzzie cricketer . The footy World Cup must be greater for instance?

Absolutely not.
The Ashes is the greatest competition ever to be devised. And cricket competitions were being recorded generations before that rubbish game football was devised by some village drunks.

I'm not being 'disrespestful' of anyone personally, i'm sure he must be a very gifted man to be given such an honour.

I just find it difficult to believe that people in the entertainment business (and Sport is an entertainment) are as deserving as say, nurses, scientists, inventors...people who give something to the world in a more down to earth and realistic fashion.

(At least it's not a footballer)

Honorary degrees have their place, but in my view they should be awarded for academic achievements or contributions to knowledge, not for mere celebrity, however famous the celebrities are.

The most ridiculous example of the latter was the attempt by (I think) John Moores university in Liverpool to award Cilla Black and honorary degree (( think this idea was dropped after protests by JM students).

Such awards are basically cheap publicity stunts, meant to get the uni concerned a few headlines. But in so doing, they undermine the basic values and purpose of a university.

Lord C,
I believe 'our Cilla' turned down the LJMU Degree because she was waiting to be asked to fill the post of Warden of All Souls. After all , a front-rank intellectual of her calibre can afford to be choosy.

I love footy as much as the next man, but this Ashes series in particular is the best sporting theatre I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Every moment has been absolute magic.

Surely that's what real degrees are for?

I think honorary degrees are insulting - they imply the recipient is too thick to get a real one (which is usually true).

Well if we're going on age of sport, we should be considering wrestling, polo, fishing, golf.....

Any game with only 2 teams, that takes over a month to play - how can that be fun?

Though I am starting to get into this whole cricket thing, maybe I'm losing my mind! :loopy:

How can it be fun?, who knows, it isn't sensible, it isn't natural, but it just "is fun"

It's our national summer game. Millions of englishmen before you cannot be wrong..

[only-joking]Join me in the campaign to get Bramhall lane converted back into a cricket ground..... [/only-joking]

Good on him he deserves it if he wants it. I suppose its just one way of saying well done - it would be nice for any 'person' to be in the position to ba able to turn one down.

What a game of cricket yesterday. I get the desktop scorecard from http://www.ananova.com/sport/cricket/data.html?data=matches&menu=sport.cricketscores and I caught the tail end last night in the gym - it was exciting stuff.

Lets hope the Brits claim the ashes so I have got something to be smug about when I return to Oz later in the year.

If you watch for long enough you so hear some highly amusing phrases from the commentators....

"He was aiming for his middle wicket, but he smacked it past silly mid off for four"

"usually he's a good puller, but he just couldnt get it up that time"

"he continues to stroke the balls until he gets one up long off"

I suppose when you have to waffle on for hours youre bound to come up with something funny!:hihi:

Couldn't have put it better myself Greenback, the match at Edgebaston was the most enthralling test match ever. What a ride:thumbsup:

Just wish people would use Vaughan's middle name which is of course Sheffield Wednesday:hihi:
