Hi

I tried to get the subject of this thread into T020 official design.

I hope the colon is okay

I was just musing about Mikey's location (on the border between Mercia and Northumbria) and thinking that if he is in Sheffield, as I believe him to be, then Northumbria must have come down to about Stocksbridge in olden days (back when Fletch is concerned about)

Anyway, I did a bit of an idle google and found this little snippet

"After a pause for recovery and further preparation for more distant campaigning, Egbert invaded Mercia in 829AD and advanced as far north as the southern border of Northumbria at Dore near Sheffield where he received the submission of the Northumbrian people. In the next year he invaded north Wales."

Trouble at 'Dore, happen, I wonder if they are as submissive now?

I have been rumbled.......

"The written history of Dore can be traced back to the year 829 and an entry (wrongly recorded as 827) in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle - “And Ecgbert led an army to Dore against the Northumbrians and they offered him obedience and concord and thereupon they separated” and thus King Ecgbert became “Our Lord of the whole English speaking race, from the Channel to the Firth of Forth”.

The importance of Dore was its position on the boundary of the Anglo Saxon kingdoms of Mercia, recently conquered by King Ecgbert of Wessex, and Northumbria, the second most powerful kingdom. At the time, Northumbria was under pressure from viking raids and unable to fight on two fronts, leading to the acceptance of Ecgbert as overlord and effectively the first king of all England"

Well you certainly taught me something new.

Not just that Dore had such a strategic importance once, or such wimpy inhabitants, LOL, but that all north of Dore was in Northumbria, which is a massive concept to get your head round

Thank you for putting that in your profile and giving me food for thought.

:)

No no no, that's not MY design! Thats how the mods change thread titles to, although usually with a dash. I prefer normal straight forward titles by far.
