Theres a post somewhere that says there is a Au Natural Interiors opening in Meadowhall retail park. Not much good now, but they are normally good for canvases and stuff like that.
They sell the little bendy men that you can draw as well!

The "Works" are one store which stocks cheap canvas's and paint. These shops are distributed round the place at Crystal Peaks, The Moor, Doncaster and Barnsley and no doubt at other places as well. The paints they sell are usually in sets and you can get Acrylic, Oils and Water Colours depending on your particular need. If you want something just a bit more upmarket there is the Arts and Crafts place at Meadowhall Retail Park. I've been using the Daler-Rowney "System 3" Acrylic paints for some time now.
If you want something a bit cheaper than Canvas's you can get pre primed boards for any of the paint systems you use. These are better than canvas in some ways and are stored more easily.
Try http://www.artdiscount.co.uk/ I have bought from them before, quick delivery no problems
Make your own stretcher. Buy canvas from a charity shop (old cotton sheets) wallpaper paste as a size and emulsion paint over. You could double up the sheet if you had to.
Pound shops often used to do sets of cheap oils.
good luck.
