View Full Version : Car parking increase in Sheffield

Car parking charges are to increase at the end of the month to £1.30 per hour.

Do the Councillors of this fair city want to kill the town centre off, because they are going in the right direction.

Fleecing drivers in this way without looking at alternative ways to attract shoppers and other users is so short sighted and will drive more people to out of town shopping centres.

They should take a leaf out of Manchesters book if they want to see an integrated, efficient and very usable transport system.

It is the same with development around the canal basin. Every other significant town/city in the North has made use of and developed their inland waterways. Sheffield has made an half hearted attempt but IMO it hasn't been worth the effort.

Why does Sheffield always lag behind everywhere else? Can the Council chamber be filled with councillors lacking any ambition or real ability to recognise potential when it sees it?

i feel these increases are to encourage use of the (diabolical(sp)) transport system. i rarely go to town if i can avoid it and if i do i use the victoria Queys car park which is £3 for the day

If I am alone the bus/tram is usually cheaper (if parking for more than one hour).
As soon as you have 2 or more people, the car & parking becomes the cheaper option.
This change is not making much difference to that.

I feel that this is another nail in the coffin of the city centre.
I went into town last Sunday and was immediately struck by the efforts of the parking attendants slapping tickets on every available vehicle.
A friend of mine belongs to a choir who were performing in the winter Gardens. The choir needed a piano for the performance and an electronic one was brought in. While attempting to take this piano from his car to the Winter Garden, my friend was given a ticket by a zealous parking attendant.
An afternoon spent entertaining the public, raising money for charity cost him a £60 fine.

Whilst in the city centre I also noticed that Pay and Display car parks are now charging on a Sunday.

It seems a good way to discourage people from spending in the city centre.

How the City Centre survives I'll never know.

Crap car parking & charges

Crap transport & charges

( Is the Goodwin fountain & hole in the road still there?)

How people can comment on the City Centre when they clealy haven't been for so long I'll never know.

"Goodwin fountain" went 5 years ago

"hole in the road" went 10+ years ago

Last time I parked in the city centre it was 30p per 20 minutes, so that would be 90p per hour if I'm not mistaken.

To be honest, they vary:

Thanks for the link, it seems to vary so the 'car parking increasing to £1.30 per hour' is a bit vague!

Can anyone give anymore detail - or know where to get the detail from?

It depends if you park in the inner or outer zone. Prices vary.

I have just been to the University to go to St George Library and the parking around there on the road has increased too. Cost me £1 for 1hr 30mins, extorniate.

Have tried to find some comparisons on charges but some council websites don't seem to have the charges listed.

Leeds 30p - £1.20 per hr depending on location
Rotherham 80p for 2 hrs
Chesterfield 50p per hr
Doncaster 80p per hr

i think thsi is one of the biggest issues the councillors just fail to look at..shopping.

If everyone had three of four shopping bags (more for some laydees!) can you imagine how a packed bus would look. I'd almost be sure that you'd have one bag less when you get off the bus thanks to the chavs at the back. Shopping needs a car boot!

It does make me wonder what the motivation is behind the various parking changes. For instance, they are not building on the new car park that was put in just off park square (where the old market building was)! So aside from increasing charges, they're reducing parking availability.

Either the council planning department is very, very stupid, or they have an ulterior motive. However, seeing as the town centre has been reduced to 'thrift' shops, 2nd hand shops and smaller versions of Meadowhall's shops, I only go into town for the pubs.

The new StreetForce Parking Services staff that go out ticketing (instead of Traffic Wardens) are supposed to be self financing.
I can see a link here.
