Just about what you would expect from police in Chapeltown, thats why the area is going down the nick. Lots of older people find gangs of kids intimidating so they dont go out much after dark.

It's true, I live in Burncross and it's a shame but the area is starting to go down hill and I could mention names but I won't for obvious reasons! Besides it isn't just the one person!

Everybody you talk to, even those in their twenties and thirties - there's no age limit on it at all now, are afraid to go out alone after dark. That's not just in this area, that's anywhere. It's wrong. It shouldn't be like this at all. It's truly disgusting!

Enough said for now - if I get started on this, I'll not be in bed for another 6 hours!!

Cheerio!

Did anyone make a complaint about the gang of kids? If not, maybe the copper didn't see any reason to do anything? And in any case, what's one copper going to do against a gang of youths if they turn nasty?

Where were the parents? Why weren't the parents making sure the kids were at home or at the very least behaving themselves? I don't know, some people let their kids roam the streets at night what do they think they are getting up to :loopy:

Dont see the problem myself, unless they were causing trouble.

Well for a start they were blocking the entrance to the petrol station.. and well I wont go into the swearing.
I can see the problem.. If I were the buisness owner I would want them removing from my premises. How many customers have they scared away?
I was allways brought up to respect other people if I were to hang around I would do it in a park.. not on someones buisness premises.. Obviously standards have changed since I was brought up..

i noticed the spar and kfc are places they like to hang out as well .
perhaps its time they had new laws stoping kids under 17 hanging about on the streets after 9.30 sounds harsh but mayby its the only answer .
also i dont see why the police need a reason to step in when its gangs of more than 5 kids causing a disruption or is chapletown going to wait till will end up like other parts of sheffield.

It all depends on which group you are part of. About 5 years ago I would have been one of the lads hanging around Chap getting drunk in the park and wotnot. We didnt do any harm and I reckon if I go down now Id still know alot of the people your talking about and they're all ok in my book.

But, now ive got a bit older and moved up near Ecclesall Road I go to to Best Kebabs, and see all the local lads hanging around - it does my nut!! Me and my mate were taking the mick - we thought they were being a nuisance hanging around DAMM KIDS!. I think when you grow up you forget what its like to be young.

Have you any other place or suggestion for the kids to hang out? They are at the age that they are no longer youngsters but neigher are they adults.

Surely you remember what it was like when you were their age? Either give then something contructive to do, or somewhere they can go to use up their energy or quit complaining! OK the language I don't like - but what else are they supposed to do? Another couple of years and they will be the same as you - complaining about other kids and making a fuss.

Unless they have something else to do, meeting and talking (ok and the swearing) is something you have to put up with. You have a problem with that? Then set up a youth club or something constructive, just don't expect the police to have to arrest them - for what????

I agree that these kids sound as if they are at that awkward age-----between childhood and adulthood. Also it's impractical for their parents to know where they are all the time.
However , unless teenagers have very much changed , the last thing a lot of them want is to be organised or under adult supervision. In fact I find it very strange that they haven't found somewhere more private to gather.Something to do ? Well ,apart from all the normal activities that they COULD do like having a hobby , meeting at home and so on , I find it strange that a group of teenagers can't find something to do , than hang around a shop or a car park.
We used to hang around in a gang in the '50's and our parents had absolutely no idea where we were. Sometimes we simply hung around , flirting , gossiping , laughing or exploring somewhere we hadn't been before . We might , if we had any money , go the cinema or a cafe.
The main difference between then and now is the fact that if we stood blocking off a right of way and using obscene language , either some adult [s] would come and get rid of us or if the police came we would get a very nasty telling off [ plus a thump . perhaps , if we were cheeky ] or we might actually be charged with something. The result was we were never stupid enough to do anything wrong in public or TO the public.
These days most adults have lost the confidence to deal with any loutishness and the police probably can't face all the paperwork connected with even comparitively minor offences , so if kids want to swear or obstruct traffic or people , they will do until somebody does something about it. There are no greater show-offs than teenagers !
