hi, does anyone know where is the best place to go to adopt rats, one of my daughters rats has died today and we want to get another one for her mate that she has left behind, we want to adopt rather than go to pets shop.

I don't have any does at the moment, just a pair of older bucks.
Have you tried the RSPCA? I know they sometimes have rats. There is also rat-a-tat rescue which is local (Doncaster) http://www.rat-a-tatrescue.webs.com/ (website) - i know they aren't taking rats in at the moment, but i'm sure they will be able to point you in the right direction.
If you want to look further afield, there are lots of rescues in the manchester area :)

Good luck!

Hiya, Lilly is of course right - I hadn't thought or Rat-a-tat, it's definitely worth contacting them. http://www.rat-a-tatrescue.webs.com/ Lilly's link didn't work for me but I don't know why!
