View Full Version : Which is the best pub in Sheffield? teflon 10-08-2005, 14:07 which is the best pub in sheffield and why PaulG55 10-08-2005, 14:09 Devonshire Cat, can't argue with their choice of beer lol Norbert 10-08-2005, 16:02 The Sheaf View: Low prices for huge selection of high quality ales. Mix of punters is varied and never objectionable. We often win the quiz and get free drinks! Beats Dev Cat for atmosphere, clientelle & prices. PaulG55 10-08-2005, 16:12 Yeah Dev Cat is a bit steap price wise, well you get what you pay for I suppose... Where is the Sheaf View anyway, can't say I have ever been? Goon 10-08-2005, 17:11 Without a doubt the Sheaf View. goldenfleece 10-08-2005, 17:41 THE NELSON.....nice beer, great people, superb Saturday night crowd and atmos and amazing vibe.... Norbert 11-08-2005, 12:12 Shear View is in the vicinity of Heeley Bridge, more here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/greedycow/pubs/heeley/sheaf_view.shtml http://www.sheffieldpub.co.uk/pubs/viewpub.php?id=421 Cardinal 12-08-2005, 14:58 Dev Cat is good but it isn't the best pub. Depends what you want on a particular occassion/day and cost etc etc. Personally, on a nice day/evening I think the 'Fat Cat' is better than 'Dev Cat' as it has a decent garden/outside seating area. Good pubs with proper outside sitting areas is something I think Sheffield city centre lacks. marlinfisher 13-08-2005, 13:25 devonshire cat excellent beer menu PaulG55 13-08-2005, 14:04 I have a bit of a fetish for continental beers like Erdinger and Paulaner. Not many places sell that kind of stuff, so apart from the Dev Cat, I can't think of anywhere else? well Whetherspoons have Erdinger in bottles. It was great when I went to Italy, that kind of stuff was all you could get! :D Nemi 13-08-2005, 18:36 The Nelson is a good pub its good any night of the week my fav's is wednesday and the weekends they do some wicked cocktails. Carmine 13-08-2005, 19:17 Originally posted by goldenfleece THE NELSON.....nice beer, great people, superb Saturday night crowd and atmos and amazing vibe.... Pylon 15-08-2005, 08:52 IMO the best pub has to be The Banner Cross at the top of Ecclesall Road. Love it. Speedy_Jim 15-08-2005, 09:04 The Kelham Island Tavern gets my vote. It's round the corner from the Fat Cat. The prices are great (£1.60 ish for a pint of top ale, about 2 quid for the stronger stuff), the beer selection is the best I've ever seen (usually about 10 real ales on), the beer is superb - always perfectly kept. The place is spotlessly clean and well cared for too - it doesn't have any of that stale smoke mustiness of most pubs Great and cheap real cheap ale, clean and bright place, friendly staff and customers, a good lovely garden, and just round the corner from my flat. Bloody brilliant. It keeps winning the 'best pub in Sheffield' Camra award too spanna 15-08-2005, 12:03 Bannor Cross?? you must be havin a laugh! it's alright i spose as far as pubs go, but it;s a bit of an old mans' establishment and the land lady's a nighmare. There is a great beer garden round the back, but in general it's somewhat lacking in atmosphere. Sheffield's a bit lacking in good pubs tho - Lescar and Porter Cottage on Sharrow Vale Road are always a good bet tho.. redlion 16-08-2005, 13:55 The Broadfield Abbeydale Road Ousetunes 16-08-2005, 14:04 Originally posted by Speedy_Jim The Kelham Island Tavern gets my vote. The place is a (hiddem) gem. andy4107 16-08-2005, 14:51 The Friendship close to the back of the arena has to be one of the worst, I know that... You ask for a pint of carling, you get a pint of flies! :( Norfolk Arms, Chapeltown, is always a great pint though! Carmine 16-08-2005, 16:18 Originally posted by Musey I've not heard that, when's it supposed to happen? Not sure when it's happening, but most of that block (and the one above with the Casbah) is being flattened as part of the ongoing efforts to make Sheffield look like a post-nuclear wasteland for the next decade...apparently a tall and shiney new building will take its place in the new order of things. Shame...:( bielby 16-08-2005, 16:30 The pub next to the river and the ringroad is really nice, like a nice city centre bar but without all the city centre negatives. near Kelham Island too - what's it called again? and it sells Moonshine too! The Riverside? Pipine 16-08-2005, 16:46 I'd say the riverside too... I love the building and the sunday lunches are unbelievable! BUT.. my big problem is I don't drink any alcohol other than spirits so that leaves me torn between loving bars like Revolution as they have an amazing array of flavoured vodkas and weird and wonderful spirits so I never get bored... and wanting the ambiance of pubs like The Riverside or the Sheaf... cos I hate drinking in town, especially at weekends. I'd settle for the real ale pubs having just one or two bottles of classy flavoured vodka like "42 Below" Manuka honey or Watermelon.. its not like I want them to do a tequila sunrise or a Pina Colada... doublewood 16-08-2005, 16:48 :) without a doubt the sheaf view, but the dev cat is a close 2nd, erdinger can be bought on draft even the dark one. I worked there for donkeys years, right through the refurb and then left for pastures new (along with all the good local custom who were not elligible for the student discounts). Haven't been in for a while but it holds a lot of good memories. Very friendly bar staff and a good mix of people. Thankfully no chance of it ever becoming a theme pub. But you never know. Having said that, I would probably go with the Sheaf View as No.1. Anyway after the write up in next months issue of, Classic Rock Magazine, the place will get even more packed, they may not be able to get everyone in. So get there early, to grab your spot. The girls love the best cocktails in town, at the best price. I hear Halloween night is going to be a scream. Just a great smoke free atmosphere now, with great food. CockneyMafia 28-09-2005, 11:57 Lescar, Sharrowvale Road. Cheap beer, cheap food, the most electic mix of people in the UK and the best live Footy venue around. We are camped in the back room every Sunday afternoon. It is also the most tolerant pub you will ever wish to find. If you know what I mean. SpiderPete 24-10-2005, 19:44 I quite like The Monk in town and the Graduate, mainly for the pool table and cheap drinks. randolf 25-10-2005, 15:31 If Mandy is the miserable sow who has been the landlady at the porter cottage for a while now, then she is particularly bar-happy (I mean, of course that she bars people for no particular reason, not that she's a happy person in a bar, which she certainly isn't). Dear_Ladies 25-10-2005, 17:02 Almost everybody I know has been barred from the Porter Cottage at one time or another. One of my friends was barred just for walking in - he didn't even get the chance to open his mouth - just "Out!" littleidea 25-10-2005, 17:35 Nelson's ok and it plays great music but there's never anywhere to sit and I've been in with mates who don't look like your average rocker and all the young goth kids looked at us like we all had two heads. So much for not stereotyping people based on their appearence! For me two of the best boozers in Sheff are the Grapes and the Dog and Partridge. You get all sorts of people in the Grapes as well as live music, a 40p pool table, a real fire for those long dark nights and the fella behind the bar is sound. As for the dog , it's a great old style pub with the best Guiness in town. You can keep your trendy bars and overpriced pints! esta 26-10-2005, 16:38 got to be the Harley for the yummy Sabai wine drink and the comfy sofa's...awesome mash-up dj on fri nights too..well last year there was. kirky 26-10-2005, 16:47 Originally posted by teflon which is the best pub in sheffield and why not the white bear, soon as the staff have had drink they all get nasty with one another, terrible atmosphere:( slimsid2000 06-01-2006, 13:40 Which of Sheffield's many pubs do you consider to be the best and for what reason? As i grew up a two minutes walk away (or 1 min on my skatebord) from the Walkley Cottage I would agree, it was a great local pub, full of lads I went to school with and hung around with. When Fred had it in the early 90's is was at it's peak. Shame they moved the snooker table and made it into an eating area. Great for a lazy afternoon drink outside on the benches or summers evening. I would agree also with The Washington, then again my best mate owns a major share in it, so I would wouldn't I. But is has some great characters (Banksy and Nort) and the music is Fab, and no hassle from anyone. Oh, and the photo's are great as well (the photographer is another v.good mate of mine) And I would also like to 'big-up' the Fox and Duck in Broomhill !!
