Does anybody know if it is possible to replace the aging felt roof on the ground floor extension to my kitchen, with some kind of tough roof which can be walked on. Maybe have balcony sides so I could sit out there with a patio door from the back bedroom in a summer evening?

Would I need planning permission?
Is there some kind of special roofing system available?
Is it feasable to have a Patio window on the first floor, replacing a standard bedroom window?

I think you might need some sort of permissions in case your neighbours are living close and would be able to watch you rubbing suntan lotion into your bellybutton.

Or if you can see into any of their windows/garden....

Invasion of privacy? Think this is one that depends on how close others are to your property.

But I could be very wrong.

Oh er Muddy you sunbathing way up high for all to see!!

Nice idea though...I would expect planning permission would be required and building regs - the kitchen roof would need to be strengthened and if the bedroom window is to be replaced with patio doors 'wider' than the current opening it will need a new lintel for support !!

It won't be cheap....but then it depends how much it is worth to you to have the work done!!

:P

Best to consult an architect first !

Hi samc,
that could be a problem as It would mean I could see right into their bedroom. The house is an old terraced one and most people on the road have a ground floor extension into the garden where the bathroom is. In my house, this flat roof over the bathroom is always bathed in sun in the afternoons and evenings when the weather is good, I would love for it to be a kind of high sun terrace/balcony.
