Being the geek that I am, I took the day off work yesterday to see it. It was excellent. My single issue with the film is that it is obvious what has been removed from the original 4 hour cut, even as someone that hasn't read the books. Can't wait for the full version on DVD now.

I can't wait to see it, unfortunately I am going away so won't be able to see it until the new year :(

I have read a few reviews, and most say it is brilliant, a couple have said that there are some unnecessarily long scenes in it and that the end drags on a bit.

Apparently, Sam comes into his own in this film with some really good acting. He's come a long way since the Goonies!

I will have to wait and see, Enjoy everyone, I am very jealous.

Yeah, a lot of people have complained about the long ending, but I liked that, I wanted to know what had happened to all the characters. Having sat through 9 hours of watching their lives unfold on screen, I'd have been dissapointed if it was a swift resolution.
Sam is great, he touches you more than any of the other characters manage, and that is no mean feat. I wouldn't be suprised to see him get an oscar next March (though I said that about Daniel Day Lewis last year).

Saw it last night, and really enjoyed it. Definitely the best of the three even with the obvious jumps where they've had to edit it down. The long ending didn't annoy me though the gratuitous use of slow-motion did, but overall that's a minor grumble.

And people in the cinema (UGC) clapped at the end which amused me greatly. Who were they applauding? The projectionist?

That is nothing - should have been in Barnsley Odeon when they showed "The Full Monty" it got a standing ovation

Saw LOTR 3 last night - really good even though I never read the book. Fight sequences in it were brill. Matrix etc look naff in comparison !

Bit at the end with houses set in a hill spoiled it though for me as it just reminded me of the teletubbies :D

Wonder if Peter Jackson will release a director's cut, with all the cheesy hollywood bits (like "snowboarding" down steps on a shield  ) taken out?

I think it'd be good as a really dark cut - that said, I've not seen the latest one yet - probably leave it a few weeks until the initial rush subsides a bit.

Oh goodie, I'm not the only one who winces at the 'snowboarding' moment in The Two Towers. What a nasty little cringe that gives you in the middle of some really fabulous escapism.

Oh, I hate a dusty cinema...makes such a mess of your mascara:banana:
I'm expecting tears, and normally I wouldn't go within a mile of a movie that wanted to make me cry, but this time I'll make an exception.
And thanks to DB, I may soon no longer be the only person who hasn't seen the extended editions of the other two yet.:D

Matrix was a bit naff anyway I thought. :( I got the impression that they were trying to be a bit 'too' clever.....focusing on how confusing they could be in their 'geeky' world rather than giving the audience a clue as to what the hell was going on. Half the people I spoke to about it didn't get it at all. I think I only just got it

Anyway, drifted off a bit there.......LOTR3..cool. :D

It wasn't that good. It had good special effects, but the ending was far too drawn out. I don't rave about Lord of the Rings like a lot of people do. It was good entertainment for 3 hours, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again. I'm not a massive fan of the story, I think if I'd read the books I would have followed it better.

Well I've avoided this thread until I saw the movie but WOW that collection of movies are THE best I've seen.

I really enjoyed ROTK and I couldn't tell where the edited bits were so I'm really looking forward to the extended version on DVD next summer!

You're welcome cosy re: the extended version of the Two Towers.

Wow.... LOTR the best movies EVER!

I've now seen it, loved it, it was fantastic and did the books justice. I'm going to have to go and see it again. My mouth was open through a large part of the film, through sheer wow factor or the scale of it.

Sidla, and some others point out about the ending dragging on, and I had read about that in reviews before I saw it, well I can see your point of view in that it's a long film and after the ring bit is resolved you wanna get out of there, however, if you've read the books then you will know that the story doesn't end with the ring in mordor. The return to the shire is in the book and in fact a lot has been cut out of what happened after the ring story is complete. Saruman and wormtongue should be in it, I won't say anymore than that as I don't want to spoil it for those who've not read the books, it may well be in the extended version which is rumoured to be over 5hours in length! Peter Jackson can't win, he puts the ending in and people moan that it drags on, he cuts out the ending and die hard fans moan that its not true to the book!

I went to see it on Friday and must agree with most of what has been said. The film was brilliant. I've been a fan of the LOTR since I read it many years ago and admit that PJ has more than done justice to the book.

My one criticism is the audience. I thought I was in a cross between a fast food outlet and a sanitorium ward. I know it's a long film but the amount of food people took in with them beggared belief. The noise of their eating coupled with the obvious illness of half the audience spoiled the experience a bit.

However, the good news is it has persuaded me to buy a 32" wide screen when the complete boxed set of the director's cuts comes out so I can watch them all again in the comfort of my own home.

Yeah, my brother told me about the proper ending.

I just felt that it didn't really have a proper end and it was just dragged out for the sake of it. If they'd have had another battle back at the Shire then at least it would have had a proper climax. Still I'm not complaining, it kept me off the streets for 4 hours!! ;)

Eventually got round to seeing it last weekend at UGC.

Film was the best of the 3 but at 3 hours 20 mins it's too long at a single sitting. They need a comfort break. I went to the first showing of the day and as soon as I got in I detected the scent of stale urine.
If you're going to run a film that long and that kids are going to see - perhaps supplied with drinks to keep them going - then nature is going to take it's course. A few did push past everyone during the film to get to the loo but the smell was evidence that some are too engaged by the film to want to miss a couple of minutes and try (unsucessfully) to hold out

I liked the first film but coudnt watch it again. I thought the second bore little resemblance to the book as the order of things in the first, second and third films has been altered too much.
The second film was too long, and while I was really looking forward to the Return of the King the beginning 30 minutes was so slow and the time it took to get them to Gondor was stupefying considering how urgent it was supposed to be. The film looks great, special effects great but over long, camera too jumpy ( director too up himself).
The fans of the books are too precious and will not stand any criticism. I read the books as a child and am rereading now so I do like the story but the films have been overcooked
I know I will get roasted for saying anything negative but tough get over it.;)
