View Full Version : Down in the Mumps...
angelgirluk 10-08-2005, 11:02 I just got back from the doctors this morning to be told that yes.. I have mumps!
It's been a sh*tty week and this just tops it riiight off!
I am signed off work until 22nd August which I am hoping to be paid for.
I am in the early stages of it but can't help feeling worried about what's to come as I have read so much online that makes me feel very uneasy and the doctor didn't fill me with too much confidence either.
Anyone that's had it, please post me a message - let's face it, I'm not going anywhere so I'll be waitng :D
Cheers x
cgksheff 10-08-2005, 11:09 Sorry to hear this, but don't worry.
Can be unpleasant with feeling feverish and sickly with sore glands but should not be too bad.
Judging by your username, you are female and should have no worries with regard to fertility issues.
If you don't mind me asking, did you ever have MMR vaccination?
angelgirluk 10-08-2005, 12:26 Hi
No I never had the MMR as it wasn't around when I was little. That only came in in 1988 didn't it? I am soon to be 23 and only had the measles and rubella jabs.
It really sucks - I can actually feel my face swelling. Not a nice feeling at all!
Thanks for your post - I can feel it's going to be a very long couple of weeks!
Love Claire :)
Guess its school holidays and all the kids who havent' had their MMR jab are spreading it around everywhere.. hope you get well again soon :)
Guderian 10-08-2005, 12:31 Cheer up Angel - at least you are a lady!
My friend recently had mumps and a part of his anatomy (he has two of them) swelled up to 3 times their normal size!
And of course us males have to worry about the infertility aspect too, so you probably might not get any party invites from male pals any time soon!
Oh sorry, that probably hasn't cheered you up any!
;-)
Classic Rock 10-08-2005, 12:32 Oh that's awful, I hope you feel better soon. But it's a good excuse to eat ice cream. Makes the world of difference.
Very sorry to hear you're down in the mumps angel. I dont remember it as being too bad and hope you get better soon.
angelgirluk 10-08-2005, 12:45 Thanks guys :(
The ice cream part has cheered me up but not getting party invitations from guys sucks :( :( :(
Keep me entertained peeps LOL x x x
Love Claire x x x
Anyone got any jokes?
Lucy_Smith 10-08-2005, 13:29 Loads of my mates at uni had it this year...suprising ALL had the MMR (nice to see it works)
I never got it, which did shock me because I never had the jab!
Hope you feel loads better soon xxx
sheff_minx 10-08-2005, 13:42 You need two "doses" of MMR for it to be effective...
People born between 1981 (I think) and 1988 did not receive any vaccination originally and are too young to have caught it as a baby as was previously common (as with most diseases, it is less serious as a child with no effect on fertility). Those born after 1988 received their 2 doses of the jab, and the 81-88ers were given one jab in a "catch-up" scheme. Very few of this group got their second dose and are therefore vulnerable.
Or so my doctor told me when I had the symptoms earlier this year (fortunately it wasn't).
Get Well Soon angelgirluk :)
i haven't had mumps but wish you a speedy recovery -you must be feeling pretty miserable.
KookyKoo 10-08-2005, 22:45 Ah Angelgirl, I feel your pain, I got mumps last year, it was my 3rd-to-last week at uni, finals looming, coursework deadlines imminent, working my butt off to finish... and I was ordered by the doctor to get off of campus and stay away for a week! Nooooo what bad timing!
I never received the MMR (was born in 1983, in another country)... but by the sounds of things, it's not 100% effective anyways! I'm with Buffy, great excuse to eat ice cream, just try and make the most of having a rest, your body will thank you for it :P
aawww
hope u feel better soon
ive just had tonsilitis and i knew nothing about that...til i felt the pain and looked into it. i know even less about mumps but i hope you recover soon
and i'm a guy...so ermm lets have a party! wooo! theres an invitation...and even better...i have ice cream as well!!! :)
angelgirluk 11-08-2005, 00:07 Hi guys!!
Wish I could sleep but I'm in too much pain :(
LOL @ MTheo - unless you've had mumps you'll have to wait until I am completely better I'm afraid, it can be very very bad for guys if they catch it!!! We can share a tub of Ben and Jerry's as soon as I am well again tho ;)
Awww @ poor u KookyKoo having to do all that uni work while feeling like crap! I really lucky I guess because all I had to do was call in work and tell them and I will get someone to drop my doctors note off for me. You're right though, it's an ideal time to get rested up and try and take it easy for a few days!
Keep writing to me peeps - really need the company at the mo :) Cheers x x x x x x
angelgirluk 11-08-2005, 00:09 PS..... While I am here do any of you need a travel pass as I can't use mine now and it is valid until 24th August!
Cheers!
Cranberry 12-08-2005, 16:53 Why don't you get a photo taken of your swollen face?
Seems a daft thing to do but it could be good for a laugh when you recover.
angelgirluk 12-08-2005, 16:57 LOL I already did :)
lizzmobile 12-08-2005, 20:58 Have you thought about seeing a homoeopath? There are some good ones at that Wellforce place on Wilkinson st.
sugarnspice 12-08-2005, 21:10 Oh you poor thing. Just wanted to send on my sympathy (I had this as a young teen) & wish you a speedy recovery matey.
Big hugs xxx
