Was looking to move my mp3 collection onto solid state drives but the prices are staggering!!!!! I need 2 terrabytes and it was scary!!!!
Any one any idea when such new technology is likely to become closer to the price for normal optical storage drives? Year? 5 years?
Yep they are silly expensive, probably another good couple of years (4-5?) before higher capacity drives become really affordable

I dont know anyone who actually has one...they are the same principle as USB flash drives yes? Got a few of those but they so small.....

the smaller (4 gig) solid states are used in some of the netbooks
they are supposed to be more robust and quicker

yes, same principle ,some of the little eee pc notebooks have them, but very small 4gig - 8gig etc. because they are so expensive

Snap!
they are faster, and can take more knocks etc as they are not mechanical like standard hard drive so read/write speeds are faster and no discs to get scratched etc etc

I think Apple do a laptop with a 64Gb one, but you're looking at the better part of two grand.
I'm not sure what benefit you'd get from putting an MP3 collection onto them. Speed of data access wouldn't offer any benefits. If the sound of the drives is the concern, you'd be better off using networked storage and placing it out of the way.

Kind of but different technology, as in faster and intended to replace your primary hard drives.
Be a couple of years yet. Now Win 7 properly supports stuff like Trim they might start coming down in price.
To be honest you really only need 128GB (maybe even 64GB) as your OS/programs drive and those are starting to become affordable now.
shakermaker they're not intended for storage, rather to replace your primary drive.....for which they can be much, much faster!
