When your friend has found some support I would like to suggest that she reads "Freaks, geeks and Aspergers Syndrome" by Luke Jackson who was a teenager with AS when he wrote the book. Also "Martian in the playground" by Claire Sainsbury, who also has AS. I work with young adults with AS and I'm reading these books at the moment. At the back of Freaks etc there is a list of useful agencies.

I hope that your friend gets the support she needs.

ACCT (Asperger Children and Carers Together) is a sheffield based support group.
I also have a boy with Aspergers (6yrs) who is extremely difficult at times.
They have been a godsend to me..www.acctsheffield.btik.com.

Also the sign centre at Ryegate will give out all relavent information and also local support groups.
I am happy to help so feel free to PM me. It's very isolating until you meet people in a similar situation.
You have been a great friend to try and seek some help. The National Ausistic Society is also a very useful website with information about Asperger syndrome. It may be useful for yourself to help understand the condition.
I have printed some off and given them to family and friends as it's difficult to understand such a hidden disability.
All the best.

There is a website for Sheffield Aspergers Parents Action Group hope it is of some use.My daughter was diagnosed with Aspergers in April 2009 at 25 years old.She has been to a womens support group which she found extremely helpful because it seems A.S. manifests differently in men and women. Her childhood and young adulthood has been very difficult to deal with but getting the diagnosis albeit a lot later than we would have liked has been the most positive event in the journey so far.

I run a group who meet on the first Saturday of each month at The showroom Cinema. We are meeting this month on Saturday the 9th due to it being New year.
We always meet at 2pm to avoid any confusion.

This group is for adults both male and female of any age really over say 16.
We just have a chat and a drink and in the past we have been on day trips to both York and The Beatles museum in Liverpool and when the weather improves we shall arrange some trips again.

All welcome who are diagnosed or getting a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome.
I started up the group and am 48 and was diagnosed 6 years ago and I also have a 19 year old son on the spectrum

I recommend checking out our website ( http://www.sheffieldhelpyourself.org.uk/advanced.asp ) and searching with the keyword Autism. This will bring up 24 results, clicking on any of which will enable you to see the full detials and contact information for the group.

Hope this helps,

Dan
