Hey everyone,
I'm really sorry if this is innappropriate or know one has a clue but I need a bit of help here.
I live in London but want to visit a mate who lives in the Sheffield area (Brinsworth, Rotherham was what I think she called it) but I have absolutely no clue on how to get up there, where the train stations are located, if there are train stations etc etc
Can anyone enlighten me on this or at least give me a bit of advice on the best way to travel up (bear in mind I can only take public transport as I have no car)
Thanks for reading and sorry if this is wasting your time,

Thanks,
Scott

Midland Mainline trains run every hour from St Pancreas Station to Sheffield.

Someone else should be able to tell you the best way to get from the station to Brinsworth.

You can use the Yorkshire Journey planner

http://195.152.136.10/jplanner/default.jsp

You can plan a route between addresses, postcodes or simply towns.

Hope this helps :-)

Get the train to Sheffield, then walk over to the Interchange (you can't miss it it's kind of out of the train station, across a main road and to your right)

Then you can either ask in the office there, or heres a link to the buses that go to Brinsworth
http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/yorkhumber/southyorkshire/search/resultsindex.php?results=45178,45226,45212,45214,4 5215,45216,45217

If the link doesn't work just copy & paste into your browser

It is actually quicker to get to Brinsworth from Sheffield that from Rotherham (I think)

Whilst you're looking at those jouney planners, you could try the King's Cross - Doncaster - Rotherham route ;)

the GNER trains are nicer to travel on and the track's in better nick.

It all depends on your connection times though

Is there a Brinsworth bus from Meadowhall? that could be handy :)

You might also find it a good idea to multimap your friend's postcode to give you some better idea how to get there.

You'll find that the bus drivers won't accept travellers' cheques.

Thanks!
Do you think it's possible and realistic to get to Rotherham or wherever during the day and make it back to London the same night?

Cheers,
Scott

You could ask them, how they'd get down to you by train - then reverse!

When you come, don't forget some self defence weapons. EG. Night Stick, CS Gas.

Good Luck!

Rotherham centre? Yes, but I'd definately take the King's Cross-doncaster option to do that

Should be able to do it in a day - London to Sheffield on the train takes about 2.5 hours (See www.midlandmainline.com) and then I guess about 30-40 mins on the bus (see www.sypte.co.uk)

Is it possible to actually do the Kings Cross to Doncaster but instead of Rotherham go to Meadowhall? Sorry to be awkward it's just that where she's suddenly changed her mind and decided she wants to meet!!! :loopy:

But people, thanks a lot so far!
Never expected this much help but it is greatly appreciated!

Just stay on the rotherham train a little longer ;)

There are also some expresses that do Donny to Meadowhell without stoping at R'ham

miniminch - yes parts of Rotherham ARE in Sheffield, e.g. Brinsworth. My aunt lives there on Bawtry Road near Sheffield United Cricket Club. Her, postcode is S60 telephone 01709 --- but she pays council tax to Sheffield. All to do with the boundary apparently. This occurs quite a lot but the councils have reciprocal agreements with regard to amenities. I understand that the fringes of Ecclesfield also come under Rotherham as well.

Hi again,
Just to let everyone know I went up on saturday and had a great time :D.

Just would like to ask though and maybe this isn't something which can be solved on the forums but I bought a return ticket from Londons Kings Cross to Meadowhall. Now on the Outward ticket it states it is only valid on one day (which was last Saturday) However on the return it says up to Sep 26th. Now this is obviously for people who are going to be staying up there for a long time. But it isn't possible to just purchase and outward ticket and use that one again is it? Because the ticket prices were quite steep and i'm thinking of going back up again tomorrow!

Anyway sorry if its a silly question but thanks for reading!

If that return ticket was marked in any way by a Ticket Inspector, then you cannot use it again.
If you have a return ticket that has not been marked in any way, then you can still use it up to the date of expiry.

I would think that a single one-way ticket is going to cost almost the same as a cheap return (if not more), anyway.

Glad to hear that you had a good time!:)

.... oh... and there are no "silly questions". Just "silly answers"!:D

There are fairly cheap tickets (£20 return) from London St.Pancras to Meadowhall via Sheffield if you book the exact train time at least a week in advance. You might want to try that for next time.
