Do any of you believe there are alien life forms out there? And do you think they visit us?!?

I remember as a child being terrified of that John Wyndham book where a boy has a weird alien life force visit him in night. . Chocky?? That was so scary at the time!

I'd agree that anyone who claims to have contact with aliens is a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic, but I reckon there might be some kind of alien life out out there...

I definitely think theres Aliens out there, but not the kind that visit us. If anything the aliens out there are probably just simple life forms like bacteria or similar, but life forms non the less. Theres too many options for there not to be life out there imo

I'm sure we're not alone in the universe - just look at the size of it. But I also think we're unlikely to ever get a call from our neighbours for the same reason :(

It's arrogant to believe that in the vastness of the universe that no other 'intelligent' life has evolved. Probability alone dicates that there must have been/are/will be millions of advanced civilizations out there.

As for any of them visiting us, our current understanding of science and how it relates to the universe suggests that it would be not impossible, but rather improbable for direct face to face contact.

I personally cling on to the hope that this is not true, although there's no way that I'll be around to see the required technology develop to allow interstellar travel. That is....not unless 'they' really DO have captured UFOs and are back-engineering them right now at Area 51!!!

Additionally, with the way things are going, I doubt that we'll (as a species) even get to Kardaschev's 'Type-1' level of civilization.

FYI Kardaschev's Calssification system categorizes civilizations into 4 types (we are type zero - not even on the scale yet!)

Type I civilizations control all available energy on a single planet.
Type II civilizations control all available energy in a solar system (for example, using Dyson spheres).
Type III civilizations control all available energy in an entire galaxy.
Type IV civilizations control all available energy in a complete universe. This obviously requires a cosmology in which baby universes or other exotic constructions are allowed.

Yes I believe in aliens, after all in the whole univese we surely cannot be the only beings alive.

Absolutely, although not necessarily carbon based life forms with physical 'shells', like we have.

I have no doubt at all, that inorganic, discorporate, intelligent 'phenomena' exist, and the universe itself could be said to be a living self aware entity.

Does anyone remember that TV programme about the Roswell "alien autopsy"? From what I remember it was a very unconvincing fake but I have to admit it did freak me out a bit!

It was a pretty good fake actually - very nicely done. They type of aliens portrayed in that footage are now a pretty universal image of what most people think 'they' might look like - the 'Greys'.

There's always somebody that will say "Aliens will look nothing like us - why would they have arms and hands and similar features to our own?". I would just point these people to convergent evolution. If most laws of science are universal, then surely a species that evolves on a planet similar to our own with similar environmental challenges and so on will evolve to share features with us? Convergent evolution has been displayed many times on our own planet - look at the similarities between our own dolphins (mammals) and the Icthyosaurs of the Mesozoic era.

Do I believe in aliens?

Yes - if nothing else then the mathematical probability of our planet being the only one that can sustain life is mind-boggling.

Do I believe in intelligent aliens?

Again, yes I would have to say I do. With that many stars out there and the universe being around as long as it has it's hard to imagine us being the only ones out there.

Do I believe aliens are visiting us here on Earth?

Not sure to be honest, but I would probably say no. A lot of people back it up by the fact that so many people's sightings are similar - but I think that's more likely to be more down to people being pre-conditioned to think that.

You ask anyone to describe how they imagine an alien to be and the usual answer tends to be a humunoid, big black eyes, slimy looking skin that is either green or (most of the time) light grey.

And most interestingly.... do I believe the human race will ever meet intelligent alien life?

I would have to say yes, although that may just be the trekie in me ;)

I definitley do believe in some other form of life out there but after watching a programme about string theory, my understanding of the universe was completley turned upside down. In terms of size the things we can immediatley 'see' from our planet are big but in terms of the rest of the universe and possibly other unverses they are tiny - just as we are massive to the molecules and atoms that we are made up of.

This made me think that if their is life out there, what are the chances that it is the same size as us, let alone something we can actualy see and possibly communicate with. I think its a nice idea, but not realistic!!!

Fascinating ideas, Duffer.

Reminds me of a little side-story in "Htchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" when Arthur Dent accidentally utters a sentence which happens to be the most awful insult existing in a far-away galaxy. Through a freak wormhole, Arthur's words travel far back in time and across the vastnesses of space to reach this galaxy, and the most enormous battlefleet ever assembled in that galaxy is sent to fight against our galaxy. Thousands of years later the fleet arrives at the Earth, where "due to a terrible miscalculation of scale, the entire battlefleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog".....

Hi StarSparkle, thanks. You've gotta love Bill Hicks - he just always seemed to speak the truth!!

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy was funny. I liked the one where they found the ship whose captain always stayed in the bath! But yeah, the ideas about string theory were very interesting but WAY WAY out of my leage in terms of understanding them. I did still find it interesting though, especially as they tried to use it as a possible explenation of what the universe was and where it came from. These I suppose are questions that would need to be answered if we are wondering if their is other life out there.

There are 100 billion stars in our galaxy and 100 billion odd other galaxies. So that's 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible stars which could have planets supporting life, which could become intelligent, which could be staring out at us now wondering if we're worth talking to and if we have decent coffee and broadband access.

The next nearest star is Proxima Centauri which is 4.5 light years away (about 27 million million miles by my reckoning). This is quite a long way, further even than Coventry or Droitwich. There is a theory that the inhabitants have been watching our TV broadcasts (albeit 4.5 years behind) and are just waiting to see how the final episode of Frasier pans out before launching the invasion force.

100,000,000,000 stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.

100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Galaxies in the Universe ?

Each star with its own solar system.

There are more stars in the Universe, than grains of sand on every beach on Earth.

Scientists at the Greenbank Conference in California agreed that in this Galaxy alone there must be at least one hundred thousand planets in the Milky Way Galaxy with life on them.

The Universe must be teeming with life, because the elements that led to life on Earth are common throughout the Universe.

Does anyone seriously believe that we are alone???

I believe we have been visited by beings from other worlds but they are AFRAID TO LET ANYONE SEE THEM cause they know how this planet is towards "foreign" beings.... (Trap them, etc)

Its sad but thats how it is :(

I believe that we are visited by someone, either our evolved selves from the future playing with time travel or advanced army/survivors from another that come here out of desperation or to experiment on us. If we harmed them, we'd probably be extinct before you know it.

Although I think the Roswell incident is evidence in itself, there's no dout it's a massive cover up.
