It's something to do with supplying free baby powder to nursing mothers in third world hospitals. Then, when they come out, they can't be persuaded to go back to breast feeding and so end up with a captive market who can ill afford the powder.

The nestle ban was down to Nestle's practice of pressure selling baby milk powder in countries where the water used to make the powder into milk was actually full of bacteria, viri, etc... and therefore a vector for disease and ultimately childhood motality...
Basically Nestle profit from the sale of a poorly suited product and the deaths of children...
As to whether that's STILL an issue and/or practice.. I couldn't comment but in terms of a "ban" I did think that the Union was a bit nearsighted and a little daft to not consider students adult enough to make their own mind up...

the students DID make their own mind up - there was a referendum on the proposed ban and nearly 80% of those who voted were for it, IIRC.
