View Full Version : Tram fares up again!
The tram fares are going up again. All I managed to read at the tram stop as we went past was that the megarider is up to £9 and the monthly one is going up too. The Stagecoach website is yet to be updated.
Does anyone else know what other fares are going up?
Still cheaper than worstbus.

I hope this helps was/Now
Monthly Megarider £31.00 £35.00
Megarider £8.00 £9.00
Day Rider £2.50 £2.70
Switcha £1.80 £1.90
metalman 09-08-2005, 18:11 I moaned about this last time they went up and got a load of replies saying what a bargain the tram was etc etc. I must say a hike in the price of a weekly ticket from £8 to £9, which must be about 12%, seems pretty excessive given the current rate of inflation.
i think its a large hike no doubt and i question how they have come to the decision on increasing it by £1 (their thought process must have been something like "ah, knock it up by a quid, it'll be all reet", rather than making an informed and educated decision taking into account any increases in energy costs, staff costs, etc etc) but i still think its a reasonable price.
silverknight 09-08-2005, 18:28 The more Single operator put there prices up i.e supertram only/First Week go up it make the Travelmaster Ticket better value.
To be fair to Stagecoach the weekly ticket is still cheaper then when it took it over the service.
Oh remember the good old days (all of 11 years ago LOL) when we were trusted to buy our own fares at the stop itself from those machines and wonder if there would be a conductor onboard! :D You'd be secretly gutted if there wasn't one as you'd have been able to travel free :hihi:
I seem to remember the machines were often 'broke' ;) :D It wasn't the best idea in the world though was it? :|
I don't mind so much the fares going up, well I do but see it as can't be helped but wish they would stick to just going up by 50p or so. I do think its still good value (at the moment!!)
metalman 10-08-2005, 07:07 Of course their thought process could run something along the lines of: We've got them over a barrel because thanks to the council there's no way they can go back to using their cars, so lets bleed them all dry for as much as we can get.
Or maybe I'm just cynical.
RazorSHarp 10-08-2005, 07:27 I thought this was going to happen as they have been taking all the prices of the windows on the tram. I asked a conductor last week but he said that he wasn't aware there was a price increase.
I'd have been happy with a 50p increase but a quid is a bit cheeky for what is essentially the same service that they currently provide for £8 a week !!!
sheffbag 10-08-2005, 07:36 i know it doesnt use petrol before you all flame me (but buses do)
any drivers had their fuel cost go up in the last year??
Diesel is now nearly 60p a gallon dearer than 18 months ago. so i know my fuel bill has gone up by more than a pound a week.
yes they do provide the same service but at the same time they are refitting all the trams and this has to be paid for. I drive but im paying a hell of a lot more to drive now and still getting the same service.
for the tram, then dont you think that paying for 13 of the lowest cost journeys (as was) in a week is a reasonable price to pay, if you were going full route at (i believe it was 1.80 but please correct me if wrong) then a weekly ticket now costs the equivalent of 5 journeys? so if you park at valley centertainment and catch it to hillsbrough area everyday to work then you get half the week free.
not so bad now is it?
banesmabes 10-08-2005, 07:52 Just when I am about to move house to somewhere that is close to the tram route and I was about to start using them instead of the buses. Ah well, I suppose their monthly ticket is still £10 cheaper than First's - but I agree a 12% increase seems excessive. I'd like to see Stagecoach's reasoning behind it - they can't hide behind the good old First excuse of 'increasing fuel costs'.

well, they can. without stating the obvious, trams use electricity. and electricity prices have been going up lately also.

As much as petrol/diesel though?

Does seem a bit much. What are the odds of me getting a 12% pay rise next month to offset all these increasing costs of living? About nil I reckon.
When did the fares go up to 8 quid???, it wasn't that long ago

probably longer ago than you think. at least a year ago i would have thought?
metalman 10-08-2005, 10:40 It was exactly a year ago. Regular as clockwork, every August Bank Holiday.
£35 a month is still just over £1 day, which is MUCH cheaper than catching the bus.

Yes, since either well they're fuelled by oil. We luckily have our electricity prices crapped, but they're getting higher and higher:
Gas and electricity prices, which are connected to oil prices, are set to go up this month. And with many Britons cooking - and washing and heating - with gas, bills will rise.
Taking a shower
Expensive business, getting clean
With wholesale gas prices increasing, supply companies such as Powergen and British Gas are among those forecasting bigger bills for consumers. Powergen is putting up its gas prices by 11.9% and electricity by 7.2%; British Gas has warned of a 15% rise in the year ahead.
Electricity is generated mainly by power stations fuelled by oil and gas. And the gas rise, Powergen says, is linked to the price of crude because gas is a by-product of drilling for oil.
The ever-increasing cost of these fuels has kick-started the debate about the need for alternative energy sources - and led some to look anew at the nuclear option.

banesmabes 10-08-2005, 11:34 I do wonder if companies are exaggerating increased fuel costs just so they can make more profit. I know oil prices are at an high, but is it as high as 12 - 15% in a year?

Well gas has gone up 11% this month alone, as I posted in my quote from BBC News. So one would imagine so.
I know for a fact my petrol has gone up over 12% in the past year, I can't stand filling up... get the tram everywhere instead. I'd rather get the tram to meadowhall now... before we'd have driven.
sheffbag 10-08-2005, 11:39 Oil has gone up approx 25-30% in the last 18 months.
Tothe people that are using 12% increase line, do you want a 3% i.e 25p. Someone already said 50p would be acceptable, that is 6% increase but in real terms its 50p - Thats same price as a king size marsbar

I read powergen is increasing electricity by 8% soon because of rising oil prices. So it is quite a big increase.

7.2% it's in my quote above :)
rich8841 10-08-2005, 16:46 Also, don't forget that Stagecoach also operate buses and they wont be afraid to hike up tram prices aswell to compensate for fuel increases.
I traveled on a bus near Worksop, and it cost me 1.90 to go just 2 miles!!!
Think tram fares are quite reasonable concidering the good service it offers.
