So just out of interest. If i was to write a book, what avenues do you go down to get it published? Is it a case of sending it out to hundreds of publishers and just hoping that one takes a small interest?? Anyone ever given this a go??

Hi,
the Writer and Artists Yearbook is an absolute goldmine of information - tells you who publishes what, how to go about it, what an Agent does and whether you might want to approach one, as well as lots of articles written by household name authors. I think it's well worth the price if you are interested at all in getting published

Cheers

elenab, hi. I've had a couple of novels (Danny Yates Must Die and Mr Landen Has No Brain) published in the past, before I got bored with writing things that long, and you do indeed need the Writers and Artists Handbook.

Once you've written your book, send a query letter (email) to every publisher who publishes the type of book you've written, asking if they'd be interested in seeing it. If they are, send the first thirty to forty pages and a synopsis. If that fails, try the same with every agent who deals with authors in your genre.

The one thing you have to have is persistence. You might get dozens (or even hundreds) of rejection letters before you get anywhere, so don't be put off if everyone keeps saying no. Some of the most successful authors around have been told no a million and one times before they got a yes.

It also helps to get yourself a rep as a writer before then, getting short stories and articles published to prove that your work's of a publishable standard. You can also showcase samples of your work on your own website and then plug it remorselessly, like I do (see my signature), to attract readers and have yet more stuff to add to your CV.

It's also a good idea to start working on your second book the moment you finish your first. Publishers like to know you have more than one tome in you. :)

I agree but you don't even need to buy it. The central library has the 2010 copy in stock in the lending library. :)

Welcome to the forum.

Why are you afraid to try and publish it. I don't understand.

I've got to agree. Keep trying, and don't be disheartened. I've had thousands of rejection letters (god knows what it's cost me in postage) and they still keep flooding in.

But I have been fairly successful, two novels and a bunch of other things out there, plus a regular column in a major magazine, but it's *damn* hard work and keeping up your enthusiasm is really difficult, especially when you pour your heart and soul into something to have it critiqued to death...

Good luck to everyone.

Incidentally, the best time to approach an agent is at the end of Summer. So get your manuscripts in tip top condition and start approaching when everyone's on holiday!
