I was chatting to a friend about school today and she mentioned the infamous Lemon Diet of the late 80's. I almost forgotton about but basically it involved eating a whole lemon before every meal, the logic being that it shrunk the stomach and therefore diminished appetite. There was a fad of practically all the girls in my class being on this diet. It seems hilarious now but we took it very seriously!

Did anyone here try it? And did it work?!?

I don't know if it worked, but there are some women walking around town still sucking the lemon........if their faces are anything to go by :P :P :P

Don't remember this but I do remember PLG. It was lemon juice in a tall bottle aimed at the slimmers market.

I also remember the grapefruit and egg diet which I tried back in the 70's.

I've not heard of this one, but I know a lot of people who did the slice of lemon in hot water for breakfast thing, so it must work on the same principle. But a whole lemon before every meal?? Surely thats bad for you?!

Sorry for being pedantic Mo, but wasn't that PLJ as in pure lemon juice ;)

drinking a glass of water and lemon quenches thirst which is often mistaken for hunger :D :D :D so if you feel peckish try drinking a glass of water first :D

Oh yuk, PLJ!! I actually bought a bottle of that about two years ago and it's still in the kitchen gathering dust!

The Lemon Diet was pretty awful of course. It certainly worked in that after eating a lemon you wouldn't feel much like eating anything else and certainly would suceed in giving you bellyache and heartburn!! Some of the girls at school actually kept this up for several weeks though. The things some people will do to be skinny!!

I remember my mum telling me about the grapefruit and egg diet at the time. That sounds just as bad!

Talking of bizarre diets, I also remember some diet that involved eating lots of rice cakes - nasty, smelly things with a consistancy not disimilar to polystyrene. Does anyone actually still eat those??

Very interesting! Would you eat the whole lemon, peal and all?

I remember it. It was foul but have to admit it worked. You sliced up the lemon and ate it in segments. I lost about 10lb I think.

Yes, people would cut into slices to eat it (but not the peel!). I know some people managed to lose quite a but of weight this diet, so there must be something in it.

I mentioned this to a friend who's a nutritionist and she said that lemons contain an enzyme that reduces appetite and helps weight loss. This is especially true of fresh lemon - it loses much of the enzyme if it's not fresh. I could do with losing some weight so I'm gonna try it again!

I remember my Mum in the 70's buying some sort of food replacement things, they were like small pieces of chocolate and I think the were called Ayds.

Does anyone else remember these or was she really buying chocolate and lying to me?

My mum bought some of those Ayds as well. They were like little pieces of fudge in a green box. Not sure how they were supposed to work - they didn't work for her anyway. She lost weight on the egg and grapefruit diet though.

Yeah I remember Ayds as well, my Nan had some. I tried one once. It did taste like fudge; in fact fact it probably was fudge being sold as five times the price as a slimming aid. It think it was supposed to decrease appetite before meals.

These were never going to sell when Aids hit the headlines were they?

But yes I remember them, bloody useless they were :D

Could be imagining it but I'm sure I saw some Ayds for sale in health food shop fairly recently in the slimming aids section. Anyone know if you can still buy them?

I friend mentioned this lemon diet so I found this old thread. Maybe it works on a similar principle to the egg and grapefruit diet? Apparently it does actually work!

Mmmm lemons!

I love lemons and limes, I could eat them whole! I'm strange like that - but quite slim too so it might work!

I can eat them whole too, I think you acquire a taste for them. It could be worth a shot if you're trying to loose weight.
