Its lunchtime, I cant be bothered doing any work so....

For them that play games on here...

Which is your favourite? Could be a "back in the day" classic or one you are glued to at t'minute.

I've narrowed it down to World of Warcraft, Civilisation 3 or Command and Conquer Generals but can't decide!!

Whats yours?

Age of Empires is still a firm favourite with me for PC gaming!

On the PSX2 it has to be the Spyro the dragon games..he's so cute!

:D

80's retro games...pacman and galaxian!!

Hmm, tough call... At the minute it would be either Wrestlemania 21 or World Champ Snooker 2005 on Xbox.. And for retro thrills, Lemmings roxors your soxors!

DHTML remake of Lemmings is here (http://193.151.73.87/games/lemmings/index.html) complete with easy peasy first 10 levels, cheesy music, the works.

The new one is very poor mate.. if you can, go for Football Manager 2005.. its got all the people from the old championship manager series working on it.. its fantastic.

Back in the 80's, there was a game in our local Arcade called 'Willow' (a game based on the film 'Willow'). Basically, it was a 2D scroller adventure game, had loads of levels and I could complete it in one go with a single 20p piece !!

Those were the days..............

For retro games, Skool Daze and Bak to Skool still have a certain charm (and indeed I still play them using my ZX Spectrum emulator)

Modern retro gaming - anything by the Bitmap Brothers, be it Xenon, Xenon 2, Gods, Speedball, etc. Pirates on the Atari ST

Recent-ish - The Final Fantasy series on the PS1 and PS2 (I know there were others on earlier consoles, but it was with 7 that it really impacted). The Suikoden series. Half Life.

Now - Pirates (the new remake on the PC), Star Wars KOTOR 1 and 2, Half Life 2, San Andreas, but most of all at present....City of Heroes.

On PlayStation it has to be the Tony Hawk series, though the first one for PS2 was pants. Also Burnout2 on PS2 and Crash Bandicoot on the PS1. I love Civilisation too (always have to whoop the Romans when i play that ;) ) but the best game of any for me is The Sims. I like the original better than Sims 2 - I found once I'd acheived all the goals that I was doing mad creative stuff with it, seeing what I could build, and then trying to find secret attributes like all the ways to kill the characters and so on.

The original 'Sonic the Hedgehog' always reminds me of when I was a lil' kid at christmas, so that has to be my all time favourite!

Not forgetting 'Sonic and Knuckles', any 'GTA', the first 'Metal Gear Solid' on PS and more recently 'Gangsters 2' on PC.

I've always loved Adventure games, rather than shoot-em-ups, and remember with great fondness the Level 9 games 'Colossal Adventure', 'Dungeon Adventure', 'Adventure Quest' and 'Snowball' - for the BBC B.

Fantastic quality for their day, and the lack of graphics meant you had to use your imagination. Must admit though, I would love to play their equivalent today, with the technology available nowadays.

Of the more modern games, The Sims is the only one that really appeals to me. I'll get round to it sometime! (Although I must admit to a sneaking interest in GTA San Andreas!)

From the top of my head the games I've wasted the most time on are (in no particular order):

Elite (BBC micro/C64)
Civilization (all of them, PC)
Unreal Tournament (all of them but the original is the best, PC)
Pro Evolution Soccer (all of them on both PS2 and PC)
Final Fantasy 7 (PS)
World of Warcraft (PC)
Bubble Bobble (Arcade + C64)
Wizball (C64)
Tetris (Available on everything ever made I think)
Sensible Soccer (amiga)
GTA Vice City & San Andreas (PC, PS2, Xbox)
Paperboy (Arcade)
Team Fortress Classic (Half Life mod) (PC)
Burnout 3 (Xbox)
California/Summer/Winter/etc Games (C64)
Championship Manager (all of them, amiga/pc - but not the new one)
Not sure if this is valid but... Yahoo Chess (Java)

If I had to pick one it would probably be Elite, but World Of Warcraft is the one I play most at present. Sorry for the long list, it was even longer but I deleted a load so as not to over-do it. :P

elite .... playing it on the NES

I didn't even know there was a NES version, Seen PC, BBC and C64 versions. Guess you learn something new everyday :)

The reason I picked Elite as the one out of the lot is because I think alot of modern games owe some of their success to Elite.

It was (as far as I can remember), the first open ended game. You could play it forever and at the same time you could play it a million times and never have the same experience.

It's also the first game I ever played where the biggest thrill was the constant upgrade cycle. Buying a new ship/weapon/cargo bay/scoop/etc. Building attributes.

"Map" exploration was also key. A huge universe to explore seperated into seperate area's, each needing a different level of skill and ship to succeed in.

An open ended trading system where you could buy and sell almost anything in the game.

In some respects I think RPGs (FF, Ultima, Baulders Gate, Etc) and MMORPGs (Everquest, WOW, etc) have taken many game play elements from Elite and improved on them. Some would say without ever surpassing the experience :)

Oh yeah, it was slow, we loved the trading but we realised being the crack team we were that we shoudl take advantage of flying better than the AI. We'd soon dosed up with Mil. Spec lasers and a ridiculously fast ship that could take hell of a beating. We used to trade from system to system but we'd do a bit of bounty hunting on the pirates as we went, nothing like a bit of extra cash.

Still ran away from the thargoids though!

Zxspectrum. Manic miner. Classic. Used to sit there willing the tape recorder to load and scream when twenty minutes had past by and it hadn't.
Also liked Burger time Horace spider and skiing. A game called It's only rock and roll where you got to manage a pop band and they played smoke on the water at every gig.
Atari - Pac man. I could play this for hours. Mr Do and Phoenix. - still my favourite arcade game.
Amiga64 - Some dodgy jungle trecking game.
Amiga - Lemmings! Tried the online version mentioned earlier.:)

I am truly obssessed with The Sims 2. I love making characters, playing the game, building houses, downloading new things - can spend hours on it. Just bought the new expansion pack "open for business" and looking forward to sunday to turn all my girls into beauticians!

As a kid I loved all the speccy games - Magicland Dizzy, Lazy Jones, Paperboy, Attic Attack, rainbow islands (which if any know of a simulator of I will cry) and I just downloaded sonic the hedgehog onto my phone which is great.

I know what you mean. Just doesn't seem right playing console games on a PC. I even bought a control pad for my PS2 which is laid out just like a PS2 controller - but still find it strange playing some games on it (NFS Underground 2 for example - works so much better on PS2).

Where did you get the SNES emulator from?

No offence but you do know that unless you own the original cartridge, disc or whatever, the law says that you have to delete any given game ROM you download within 24 hours.

I realise nobody ever does delete them, but I'm just giving the official line of the law so people know and then they don't get into any trouble.

My favourite computer game is reformatting and installing windows on my mate's computer for the 10th time after he has rammed it to the gunnels with internet porn, and filled it so full of viruses and diallers that it doesn't even have enough memory to start up again.

Fully aware of that law. Still have boxes filled of speccy cassettes, Atari ST discs, and various game cartidges stored away (I hoard everything). I use emulators as my old consoles are a bit dodgy now (controllers in particular), my Atari discs are a bit warped, and the ZX Spectrum takes too bloody long to load up (it still works though - rubber keys 48K version at that!! A miracle!)

I just love retro gaming - hence my purchases of various classics collections. Worth every penny spent.

I love retro gaming as well, particularly retro PC gaming... I just can't play most of my retro PC games any more cos they don't work under Windows XP!

Gone are the days of playing classics like Under a Killing Moon, Wing Commander 3 and 4, Discworld 1 and 2... The only older games in my collection that work now are Duke Nukem 3D and occassionally Theme Hospital.

Yeah...I know that feeling well. Ended up setting up a dual boot PC so I could still get into Windows 98 (games like Dune, Constructor, etc needed to be played ;) )

The other alternative is to pick up a copy of Virtual PC. However it does cost £80!!

On my next PC upgrade I'm going to use my spares to construct a simple PC to put 98 on, and use that as a 'training' pc for my son....and a way to play all my old games.

Aah...for me, it has to Frontier: Elite II (on an A1200). A very worthy sequel to an all-time classic. After that, probably Turrican, which I played on my C64. Civ III has been a staple for the last couple of years, although I'm loving Doom3 at the moment. I completed Repton in Primary school and subsequently got 'done' for sneaking in at dinner time to play it, and I also remember playing Chuckie Egg on the same machine.
Lotus Espirit Turbo Challenge was ace...I seem to remember the second one was pretty good, too. And F1GP. All on the Amiga, of course.

Can anyone remember a game called Vendetta? I have very hazy memories of it. Can't remember if I had it for the Amiga or C64.

As for the Bitmaps: absolute classics every time! Speedball 2, Xenon II:Megablast, Magic Pockets (with Betty Boo!) - I saw a Bomb the Bass 7" in Spin City recently with Megablast as the b-side. Should've got it.

I am afraid there is no such law. There is no 24 hour limit. You must NOT copy any copyright material that you do not own the original of. This includes deleted items, and items that are unobtainable by any means.

These days it's Sims 2 and Elder Scrolls on the PC, or the Silent Hill series (especially 2), Halo and Halo 2 and the more recent GTA and MGS games on the consoles.

In the (pretty distant) past I spent hours on Tir Na Nog and Dun Darach, Chaos, Quazatron and Bored of the Rings on my brother's speccy or the Level 9 adventures on my C64 :)

For any seriously retro gaming, though, my partner found me free (and legal ;)) downloads of some of the Scott Adams adventures (http://www.msadams.com/downloads.htm) from the days when we used a TRS 80 (which my brother still owns :) )

I keep a 486 DX 100 machine with 80 meg of HDD to run Civilisation 1 and MOO (Master of Orion 1 ). Somehow, I enjoy these oldies more than MOO 3 or CIV 4 or whatever number they're up to.
Used to be a game long ago that you could play without a computer: just an 8 x 8 squared board and some carved wood counters. Some people spent their lives becoming world champs at it . The graphics were lousy, and it had no sound. Think it began with ch......

Elite – do you remember the ranking system where you would start as “Harmless” and work your way up through the ranks to “Elite” - alas I got a copy without instructions so I spent the first year performing shuttle missions.

I have just got in to playing all the james bond games for the ps2 as anybody else played the bond games on ps2 as I am stuck on the rogue agent how do you take down the three aircraft and the blokes who are shooting you with the grenade lauchers, when you start the next mission after sending the codes out in that big room where all that machinery is. I could do with the game guide for rogue agent then I wouldnt get stuck on it, does anybody know where I can get a copy of it either new or second hand.

I was bought world of warcraft for my birthday but i'll be honest it scares me - people kept killing me! And a man proposed to me - freaky, I just don't get it.

Thank goodness you mentioned The Sims was getting a bit worried I was the only person in the world who played it. Just like to make a perfect society where everyone is happy, well educated and get good jobs.

I don't play computer games anymore, but; I remember having Ed the duck (from broom-cupboard fame) on a Commodore 64 in the 80's... What a game!! I've still got it packed away in the loft, one of these day's I'm gonna get it down and have a game!

There's 2 things wrong with that IMO:

1) The Edd the Duck character was almost as annoying as Kevin the Gerbil of Roland Rat fame.

2) The EtD game was just a crap colour clash infested Rainbow Islands rip off.

I loved Hidden and Dangerous 2 - it took a lot of patience. Though I would say World of Warcraft feels twice as good as my previous favourite game. I have been playing it a year now and still only seem to be scratching the surface!

Speedball 2 - Amiga.

Streetfighter 2 - Over the years, I must have forked out tonnes on this game in various different formats - Amiga, SNES, PS1, PS2, XBOX and finally PSP

Anyone remember a kung fu game on the amiga called IK+ ?

Best game ever.

IK+ was the s**t!! One of the best games ever made. Who remembers Way of the Exploding Fist? Had that on the Commodore 64.

I remember back in the day a computer shop near Castle Market. They used to have an arcade machine called Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninga. Other standout games for me are:

Senible Soccer
Microprose Soccer
Robocop
Vigilante
Shadow Warriors
Sim City (all of them)
Tekken
Time Crisis
Tetris
Strider

So many great computer games to choose one favourite! They don't make games like they used to. By that I mean from a playability standpoint, not graphically.

At the moments it's World of Warcraft - way too addictive - also Mario, Mario Cart and Rainbow Islands on my DS. I also like Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, Flatout 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2 on the PC.

Of all time I'd say all the Mario series, I also liked loads of Amiga games like Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder, Worms (not 3D!), Lemmings, Zool, The Newzealand Story, Pinball Fantasies, The Secret of Monkey Island (1 and 2), Speedball 1/2 and loads more. Remembering these makes me want to get out my A500 when I get home!

Total Annihilation is an excellent top down RTS game I'm re-enjoying at the moment.

Also good for a network blast if anyone else has it - is Defcon from Introversion software. ( http://www.everyone-dies.com )It's supplied by steam, so if you have counterstrike:source or half-life2, you can download and start playing the demo immediately.

Inspired by Wargames, it's a game of global thermonuclear war played out on the big screen at Norad. Immensely satisfying with the best ambient soundtrack I've heard for some time.

For less than £10 it's a real bargain, and great for the occasional gamer who just wants a short game, and the chance to exterminate millions from the comfort of their own War Room.

RanaRama on the spectrum! Anyone remember it?
Some frog, a load of wizards and spelling all in one go! Can't be beaten. :)

I still play breakout on our Atari woody a fair bit too!

I remember that! I was really really bad at it :D

What about classics like Bubble Bobble or Rainbow Islands with that damn vampire boss? Or classic shoot-em-ups like Parellax, Uridium+, Salamander or IO?

My all-time favourite game though would be Speedball 2, an absolute classic. The music was pretty good as well

IK+!! How could I forget that?! Any game where you could punch your opponent in the groin and press T to make their trousers fall down deserves to be remembered :D

Come to think of it I was damn good at it as well :hihi:

I remember back in the day a computer shop near Castle Market. They used to have an arcade machine called Bad Dudes vs Dragon Ninja.

I used to love that place although there were always about 20 kids around the two arcade machines in there. I think they also had an Altered Beast arcade machine in there as well.

Yeah, I remember the Altered Beast arcade machine. Top game, but it was poor on the Commodore 64. Not too bad on the Amiga though.

For you older heads, who remembers Lynx arcades? People used to talk about the older kids in there 'taxing' the younger ones, but I never experienced this.

Only went in a couple of times as a 12/13 year old. My parents didn't want me going in there!

Was that the one on the corner at the top of the Moor?

I was in there once myself and some older kid came up to me and tried to 'tax' me. I might have been younger than him but I was also about a foot taller than him and heavily built even as a kid. When I replied 'or else what?' he soiled himself and beat a hasty retreat.

Was it Gauntlet that four people could play at once, a kind of D&D themed game ?

I loved that but it cost a fortune in 10p coins when your health ran out.

Yes that was Gauntlet, and it's available to download on Xbox Live Arcade (which > PS2 online IMO).

Then again, Xbox 360 > PS2 full stop so yeh, Sony zealots bite me.

well, said it before and i'll say it again - World of Warcraft and i'm loving the expansion - The burning Crusade!!
8 million subscribers (who pay around £10 a month) making it far and away the biggest online game of all time

in the past hmm i used to like manic miner on the spectrum, and arcade games like Pheonix and Galaxy. i used to also enjoy the old text based adventure games! - the Hobbit springs to mind!

It has to be The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the PC, Spyro the Dragon: Ripto's Rage for the PS1, Fable: The Lost Chapters for the Xbox, The Sims 2 for the PC PC, Zoo Tycoon for the PC, and the SingStar seires for the PS2, if that counts as a game. :D

Works for me. many a fun night has been had with a group of mates, a few bottles of wine, and Singstar (in it's many formats).

Can't wait for the PS3 version to come out....downloadable songs! YAY!
