ARRRRRGH!

I applied for a job at the new Forum pool bar 'The Common Room' along with 3 of my housemates, we all got interviewed last week, and the letters came through the door this morning.

My 3 housemates all got offered jobs and I didn't, the reason "due to there being more suitably qualified candidates"! Fair enough, except for the fact the three housemates who got the jobs don't have any experience, whereas I've worked in the field for over two years, in a supervisory role and I have excellent references.

They didn't even bother to check my references so I suspect I was just rather crap in the interview, but according to the letter I "presented yourself extremely well and impressed me very much".

Why can't the letter just offer me the truth. I'm still looking for a job and I'd love to know what I did wrong

Probably the old chestnut 'over qualified' sometimes an employer may go for an inexperienced person as they can train them to do things their way.
they could see your previous supervisory experience as a possible conflict to the way the may want to run things.
You may need to set your sights higher and go for more managerial posts that suit your skills, or play down the supervisory experience when going for general bar work.
once you are in your experience would shine through naturaly and i'm sure it would be noted for any future promotions.
Good luck
:)

Thanks

I'm looking for a part-time position, and it's nearly impossible finding a part-time manager role in the sort of place I want. I'm willing to try my hand at nearly anything, although something in the hospitality industry is ideal...

Just gonna have to get back out tracking down jobs, thanks for your advice :)

Ring them up and ask for more detailed feedback. It's the only way you'll learn where you're really going wrong. Most companies do just use a standard rejection letter regardless of the real reasons for not selecting that person.
