View Full Version : What are you supposed to do if the doctors are booked up!!
this is crazy...i feel worse than i have in years and years and am in a fair bit of pain and the doctors have told me they mite be able to get an appointment on monday for me!!
my throat is very tender and sore and EVERYTIME i swallow it feels like sum1 is grabbing me by the throat and squeezing a bruise. its agony. i cant really drink or eat because it hurts quite a bit.
:help: :help:
ive tried benalyn but its not doing anything..and neuofen has done nothing as well...im thinkin of going to buy some ice cream just to try to freeze my throat up!!!
any ideas??
gargle with hot salt water
this thread cud get me in trouble!! please keep it sensible coz im wiling to try anything and dont want to be sucking on a bottle of vinegar from sum1's suggestion
im running downstairs for sum salt and hot water now!
i always swear by soluble aspirin drunk relativel slowly to help it coat your throat. i don't really think any of them will offer perfect relief until either the condition is identified or it decides to get better after running ti's own course.
good luck with the Dr's.
as u really are suffering try asking your pharamacist, not the woman on the counter.!!
Personally I'd gargle with soluable aspirin. Then I'd call your surgery again & tell them it's urgent. You won't be able to choose which GP you see & you won't be given an appointment as such but you should be told to come in at a particular time & someone will squeeze you in at the end of surgery.
BoppinBruce 09-08-2005, 08:49 I have just survived 2 weeks of it. As I use the telephone as part of my job I only returned to work yesterday. Take what you feel comfortable taking but, I did attend my doctors, I was told it had to take it's own course.
It appears there is quite alot of it going round, a few of my aquaintances also have it.
Ring NHS Direct to get some more advice, or go to the Walk-In Centre, there's one at the Hallamshire...
Not sure if there's one at the Northern General
:)
I went in to my Dr's with no appt cos my earache was so bad. I could not wait until the one I was gven
I had to wait till the Drs had finished their appointments and was seen at the end. Well worth waiting. And had no hassle

banesmabes 09-08-2005, 08:54 You should be able to see a GP within 48 hours, or your surgery isnt meeting government targets. Id ring them again, point this out and ask them how exactly they are attempting to meet this target (at my surgery for instance, you cant get a scheduled appointment for a week or more, but they have walk-in clinics where you wait in line and get up to 3 minutes with the doctor). Otherwise as above, NHS Direct or the walk-in centre at the Hallamshire.
they did say to fone bk at 2 to check for cancellations..but ive never actually had it when people do cancel.
2 weeks like this???? i may start crying in a minute..its agony...i just gargled with the salt water and that was a struggle coz i nearly threw up (which would hurt so bad im imagining)
p.s. its my last week at work....im gunna get a rite roasting for being off ill....the ****s
although it doesnt matter to me....how the hell can you supply a doctors note in 3 days when you cant get to see them for 6 days!!
:loopy:
NHS Direct will make sure your head isn't about to fall off your shoulders then tell you to call your GP.
The problem often is the way people word things. All you need to do is tell them you need to be seen today - it's asking for the appointment (usually with a specific doctor) that causes the delay. I'm always surprised by people who say they can't get an appointment for something that needs immediate attention. A certain number of 'slots' are kept back for urgent problems or they always used to be. I don't think that's changed.

Oh MTheo! You poor thing. Sadly I have no helpful suggestions but just wanted to send my sympathy & say I hope you're feeling better soon sweetie.
I could always make you a "special" Get Well Soon Card to cheer you up ...
:heyhey:
fnkysknky 09-08-2005, 09:03 Sounds like it could be tonsilitis but I'm no doctor :D
Get yourself down to the walk in centre at the Hallamshire
i may have to trek to hallamshire walk in centre but thats going to be hell... its bloody far isnt it...when im in s20 without a car.
i foned nhs line....maybe i was too honest and she said `it doesnt sound like you need to see a doctor immediately' sod off!! you try this pain on see how you like it. daft bloody woman
bertie749 09-08-2005, 09:30 The best thing to do is to gargle with soluable asprin and then swallow it. This will give pain relief where you need it most.
Not a nice taste but whatevere does the job.... :gag:
Well MTheo, I've just had the very same thing. You've got my sympathy.
It came on on Friday, and I haven't had anything resembling sleep until last night. I'm shattered. Swallowing was a pre-planned operation, and your lungs will start producing some rather vile goo for you to spit out soon.
BUT... help is at hand!
As I was in bed shaking, my wife popped down to the Chemists, had a word with the pharmacist, and came back with;
1. Soluble asprin, to reduce the fever. Gargle (I tried to swallow some if I could manage it)
2. Conovia throat spray. Anasthetic and antiseptic. Dead easy to use.
3. Lozenges, to suck on to stop the mouth / throat from drying up.
All in all, it was a lousy 3 days / nights, but I'm just about back to what consititues normal for me now :D
Doctors be hanged! What an utterly useless system we have.
coral_amber 09-08-2005, 09:53 dont u have a 3 min surgery at ur docs? its where u can get see a doc if u cant wait for an appointment............great idea if if the surgerys fully booked
Skatiechik 09-08-2005, 10:17 Ring them and tell them it is URGENT, and they will fit you in.
Just heard from MTheo that's he's taken our advice & managed to get to see a doctor at his surgery. I'm sure he'll be back to tell the full story soon but I'm impressed that he's already been seen!
well it took some doing to get seen!!
yes...ITS BLOODY TONSILITIS!!! and it kills, ive got some penicilin and have to take em every 8 hrs.. but dunno when the effects will kick in. its hard to eat, drink or sleep!
the doctor was very friendly but the reception staff seem to look down on you and treat you like dirt.
i KNOW when im really ill, only been to doctors about 3 times in 15 years and maybe THAT should be on record somewhere to show your not a time waster.
any1 had tonsilitis before? rough idea how long it lasts!!
its my last day at work on thursday but i think i'll be off way past that day.
sugarnspice 09-08-2005, 11:11 Aaaaaaawww you poor thing! Get Well soon MTheo. Glad you managed to see a Dr after all that.

Unfortunately it all seems to depend on the individual surgery. They all seem to have different systems - and usually have the dragons on reception keeping everyone at bay. Certainly at my surgery you can't get a scheduled appointment for at least week, even if you don't mind which doctor you see (it can be anything between 2 and 3 weeks if you want a specific doctor).
They do have a 3 minute surgery where you can just walk in - but this only runs 10:30 - 12:00 and 2 - 3:30 - which is obviously useless if you work for a living. And if, like me, you don't get sick pay (other than SMP which is next to nothing and doesn't kick in until the 4th day off sick), you work through pretty much any illness going. You can't go and sit in a doctor's surgery waiting god knows how long for them to see you because you can't afford to lose the pay.

ditto!
and as i only have 3 days of work left.....looks like if im ill for 2 weeks im sat at home, no job, no income.....interesting! thats why i hope it'll be cleared up by the weekend.
MTheo - Poor you. Get lots of DVDS's and books piled up high and snuggle up well. Drink lots of fresh orange, and have lots of icecream ( it numbs the throat wonderfully).
I have had tonsilitis before and usually lasted about 2 weeks in all but there is usually 4-5 days that are the worst in the throat then as that improved the rest of me felt really weak and low.
So rest up and get your vitamins in as your immune system gets low and you'll get any other virus. The more sleep the better apparently.
Get well
luks like me buying ice cream while waiting for my prescription was a gud idea!
i take vitamen pills regular anyways so i shud be gettin all i need. it does feel better as the day goes on and gets used to the contstant pain with each swallow...but im dreading the morning. that is soooo bad. (if you can sleep that is)
if its 2 weeks then you may well see me gettin VERY angry.

yosser_huges 09-08-2005, 19:46 Whenever my throat is sore, i have a piping hot cuppa with lots of sugar (4 teaspoons) in a regular cup. and try to drink whilst its hot, obviously dont go burning your tongue ;) .
For a blocked nose, i use Nick margerrissons remedy, as stupid as it sounds :D , warm salt warter, inhaled through the nose. sounds sick. but works a treat.
