Women drivers targeted at traffic lights

Two youths have been arrested after a spate of thefts and attempted thefts from women drivers in Sheffield.

The eight victims were all targeted in a three-hour crime spree on Saturday 6/8/05 as they waited at junctions or traffic lights in the city.

Handbags were snatched from two cars. Six other attempted thefts were reported in the Richmond, Darnall and Handsworth areas of the city.

The boys, aged 13 and 16, have been charged with theft and attempted theft.

The 16-year old has also been charged with robbery and both face additional charges of aggravated vehicle taking and vehicle interference.

=========================

This used to happen at Burngreave - keep doors locked, windows closed and valubles out of reach.

This scum needs public humiliation when caught - they should be named, shamed and made to wear bright orange boiler suits whilst doing 300 hours community service.

Young age should not protect the identity of scum - if they are old enough to steal they are old enough to be publicly identified.

can't understand why people don't have their doors locked.
common sense surely.
they could target blokes just as easy but we aren't likely to have a handbag on the passenger seat.

This has been happening in Nottingham for a number of years, and it's not just unlocked doors, the thieves will smash a window (spark plugs being the favoured tool) and snatch anything that is on the seat...............So keep all valuables, handbags etc, under the drivers seat.

I dont think this is anything new, just two youths finding a simple way to get money. You'll always get this type of thing and after the number of car-jackings last year (cant remember exactly when) we have to remember to keep all doors locked.

Although i admit (although i'm a tall bloke) that i dont tend to lock them!

I admin that I don't generally lock the doors for short trips, but if I happen to drive through certain areas, especially in the evening, then all the doors are locked and I make sure I waste no time dawdling at junctions and lights.

If it's not thieving buggers nicking stuff from in front of your face, it's drunken louts trying to treat your car like a personal taxi ...

When I was living near Clapham in London there was a spate of carjackings.

The method was to use a young women who would cross a zebra crossing in front of a car and as the bloke (usually a bloke) in the car was waiting and admiring the scenery, an accomplice would smash the passenger window and get into the car with a gun.

The pair would then drive off in the car.

It happened several times until the cops organised a sting operations and nabbed them.

However, just as I was moving out of Clapham it was reported that the pair were out of the clink and at it again.

The reason why people don't lock doors is that in the event of a crash it makes it harder for the fire service to get into your car. I think that's pretty much it. Mine lock automatically shortly after the engine starts.

A lot of modern cars will automatically unlock the doors in the event of an accident.

Personally I think anyone leaving items in full view in the car are asking for trouble.

Always lock my car door - usually as soon as I get in it, before starting the engine.

If I am on the motorway, I usually unlock the doors again (easy enough with central locking).

Always put my back on the floor behind my seat, out of sight

Some lads once tried to get into the boot of the car as hubby was about to set off home (they'd seen him put his lap top in there) but luckily he'd locked up too - and drove off pretty quickly. Shame he didn't slam the car into reverse - but then again, he'd have got done for hurting the scum-bags :loopy:

Don't ever worry about the Fire Brigade getting into your car in an accident.

They will be only too happy to break the glass / rip the door off / tear the roof open....

... and they won't ask for the keys ;)

I do all of the above safety precautions... Yet I was nearly lynched in a previous thread for my safety awareness! :o
I always lock the doors when I'm driving alone, and sometimes when I'm driving accompanied at night, or very early in the morning. Other than that, I tend not to bother when I've got any fellas in the car, cos I feel like less of a target to be honest.

I must admit, I'm a beggar for putting the handbag on the passenger seat... I don't know why I do it, its not like I need it when I've got both hands on the wheel!

If I had an accident and was unable to get myself and my kids out of the car, I wouldn't want to be waiting for the fire brigade- I'd want any passer by to be able to help, and not to be hampered by locked doors.

My colleague was one of the victims - we were really surprised that they caught them. Good on the police :)

Does that mean you've been there, done that and got the T-shirt to prove it?

A way of beating the thieving little so-and-so's is to have a clear security film fitted to the inside of the windows Tintsaway.co.uk do it. even if the glass breaks it will give you a lot of time to get out of the way / phone police. & hopefully they WILL break there hand while attempting to break in!

Handbags - why? Just another target for theives and another chain to bind us to sexist attitudes?

This method of attack was also prevalent on Prince of Wales Road some years back - new generations same old tricks!! The same applies to sexism methinks.

My car has a clever feature that automatically locks the doors once you get to 10mph, means I don't even have to think about it. Maybe something manufacturers should make standard.

I agree that young age should not be used as an excuse to get away with any crime. It gets me every time when they say that someone can't be named because of their age. Just because they can no longer be given a good hiding by their parents shouldn't mean that others shouldn't know about it. Why should everyone have to hide THEIR belongings...the point is it IS theirs and not there for some other toe rag to nick.....

what would happen do you think if you grabbed their arm when they leaned in to get your bag and then proceed to floor it on the accelerator.

that would serve the little bast***s right

oops sorry we must protect their human rights so you would probably get arrested for dangerous driving.

would be fun though

They have a clever little device in south africa where this type of crime is at epidemic levels, you have a switch on the dash that fires a propane BURNER mounted below the front doors! They dont try it a second time! Should be standard fit on most cars if you ask me.

So that when you're not moving the thieves can get in, but when you're doing 70 mph down the motorway the doors are locked? :loopy:

Am I missing the point - wouldn't it be better if the doors unlocked when you get to 10mph?

The systems were first introduced on mercedes & bmw, a to stop thieves but allso to eliminate the need for child locks on all doors. Nut why would you want to get out of the car at 70 mph on the motor way?

The doors lock the FIRST time that you pull away having got into the car and DON'T unlock when you slow down to a stop at junctions, unless you open the doors from the inside.

So every time you pull up at lights your doors are locked as a matter of course. My automatic locking triggers at 6mph, a speed hit as you reverse out of your parking spot, although I usually hit the switch on the dash as I get in to lock the doors.

I was driving along near the parkway. stood at the traffic lights and I am glad I was following my boyfriend, this coloured bloke was walking up the road and he was walking towards my drivers' door. and he just walked round to the boot. I couldnt even look where he had gone. if I hadnt been following my boyfriend. I dread to think what couldve happened. !!!!!!

Can I suggest that you put your valuables in the boot of the car and handbags under the passenger’s seat and not the drivers.
I have tried to stop from 70mph with a can of anti freeze under the brake pedal, really gets the heart racing.
