What tends to be the reason why a homemade DVD will play on one machine but not on another? I have tried with 5 different recording formats (using Nero). All five discs play on my DVD, but none play on my friend’s DVD players?

have you set nero to close the disc?
if its not closed then standard dvd players can not see the disc but your pc drive can
As long as you select DVD Video and close the disc it should be fine.

Not all dvd players (mainly older ones) are happy with home-burned discs.

Most players will play + or – R cd`s but older ones may just be one or the other.

All depends what you mean by home made DVD if your putting none DVD files on the disc not all players can read them.Ive always converted what ever to DVD then used nero. Use nero On dvd select make dvd video add the video-ts files and burn all players should read that but as stated some players dont like certain disc,s may have to try differant brand
I downloaded a youtube music video, and using Y Tube converter i converted the file. It plays on my dvd player-no problem, but not on my friend`s dvd player. Maybe its as MALKY says it is the TYPE of disc
Have not seen any option to "close" the disc on Nero (do you mean finalise?) As far as i recall i have Nero set up to finalise automatically.

stop using nero and try convert x, much better, faster and it does it all for you, just drag and drop the file you want on disc.

I think older players will only cope with -R dvds
