View Full Version : Lack of public toilets
chocotiger 08-08-2005, 23:08 I went shopping in Hillsborough last week and struggled to find a public loo. I use to use the one in the co-op but was told it was for the cafe users only and had to collect a token from the till. I ended up crossing my legs and buying coffee & sandwich in a cafe over the road.
Surely more money is spent by folk out shopping if they are not bursting to pee.
Firth park shopping center too is a bad place if you need to spend a penny.

PMSL.....well i would do .....there aren't any loos
SilentStatic 08-08-2005, 23:22 Sheffield is rubbish generally for toilets. There don't appear to be any (free) public toilets in the city centre. Nottingham has a load under the market square, very convenient...
miniminch 08-08-2005, 23:28 Orchard square near waterstones - at bit of a pisser if youre in a wheelchair (in more ways than one)
I'm disgusted by the lack of public toilets in and around Sheffield.
Where I am, the no 52 bus terminates and the bus drivers have to go to the loo behind some bushes :suspect:
I feel sorry for the drivers. They get off the bus (sometimes with several people at the bus stop) and go behind the bushes - everyone knows where they are going and what for.
What disturbs me even more though is teenage girls often gather in that area too.
Isn't there some legislation about employers providing toilet facilities for employees?
I phoned the bus company and they agree with me - but said it's up to the council to provide them.
It's illegal to urinate in public, but when there are no toilets what are people expected to do?
I know where most of the loo's are in the major stores. Shame they are usually in a bit of a state :loopy:
ReginaldD 08-08-2005, 23:36 there are them ones at the top at fargate, but you have to pay which is a load of bull, they should be able to keep them open with taxes. Its not like you get a bidet or anything for your 10p, John Lewis toilets of city centre toiltes are by far the best.
Zenmaster 08-08-2005, 23:43 Its true Sheffield is rubbish for public loos. I usually use the loos in big department stores in town. Or sneek into a pub.
Its interesting talking about bus drivers and no where for them to go. I've got the same problem with my occupation. I'm a postie and its terrible when your stuck in the middle of nowhere for four/five hours with no facilities. Very embarressing when you have to resort to knocking on someones door, just so you can use the loo.

There used to be a lot more public lavs back in the 70's (eg near where i live there were toilets on Commonside, by Walkley Library - in town - Hole in the Road, underpass between Pinstone Street and top of the Moor) although some were in a right state.
Never been owt by the Crookes / Heavygate end of the 52 route that I can remember.
As far as I'm aware the council doesn't have to provide them and back then Sheffield was so strapped for cash that nearly all the money had to be spent on statutory duties.
Bruce_Shark 09-08-2005, 08:23 Longcol's right, there is no statutory requirement for any local authority to provide public toilets (and some don't).
Here's a list of the one's near roads:
http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/street-force/public-toilets/list-of-public-toilets
Plus there are others in transport interchanges, parks, and public libraries...
...and don't forget the ones in Howden House (rates hall) and the Millennium Galleries (under the escalator).
Hope that helps.
:)
Should we adopt the Spanish view on this subject, where every bar and restaurant has to provide toilets for general use, not just for their customers.

Definitely..
BoppinBruce 09-08-2005, 08:45 If the public toilet was closed, e.g. Bolehills where I, and many others, walk dogs and one was taken, shall we say, short. If one had to relieve ones self behind a bush and was seen could one cite the closure of the public toilet as justification for one's action?
SilentStatic 09-08-2005, 09:18 Isn't there an old law saying it's ok as long as you've got one hand on a car? Or have I just made that up...

Yep. Or you could try the bus station, TJ Hughes, Mothercare and maybe a few others on this (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?postid=215911) thread.
Internetowl 09-08-2005, 15:52 problem with town centre toilets - well the men's anyway its always full of cottagers or other weirdos....I never use the public loo's - if really desperate I 'll nip into McD's - they are better due to the security cameras (I bet you didn't know that) or the ones at the Art Gallery..
I can back up Abdul (oerrr missus) the library toilets at firth park are clean, free and a bit blue...

banesmabes 09-08-2005, 17:53 Public toilets are usually very high up on the public's priority list when it comes to local public services, but in turn they are very hard for councils to maintain to a high enough standard.
I used to work for a council down south and we couldn't get toilet cleaners for love nor money. And think about it, with some of the weird things people get up to in public toilets would you really want to do that job? Sometimes the cleaners get to the toilets and find the whole cubicle smeared in faeces and pools of vomit on the floor. We always used to show people pictures to let them know the worst case scenario - but nothing can prepare them for the smell.
We also had one case where a cleaner opened the paper dispenser to replace the toilet roll and a whole bunch of hypodermic needles fell out onto their hand and arm. Gloves obviously cannot protect against HIV and hepititus so this employee had an agonising wait for their test results.
Often councils find that unmanned public toilets are more hassle than they are worth.

I don't understand....not being a junkie - can they not inject under the 'blue glow'? Thought they did it anywhere.....
DragonofAna 09-08-2005, 20:15 There is a pay toilet at hillsborough corner. 10p I think. Seen quite a queue there some days. It's one of those portaloo type things.
The toilets in the co-op are not for cafe users only if you use the ones next to the kitchenware department - between kitchenware and baby stuff. There's a gents, ladies, and disabled. These are generally well looked after though the ultraviolet lighting gives me a migraine.
Aside from that - I am unaware of any other toilets in the area.

I think it means they can't locate their veins. Although if they're desperate they'll probably just take a lucky dip anyway...
DragonofAna 09-08-2005, 20:35 Thought the blue glow was something to do with bacteria not being able to thrive under ultraviolet?
Or did I miss something?

There's a toilet near the Parkside Road entrance to Hillsborough Park.
Alternatively there's one in the social services place next door to the Italian Restaraunt near the Hillsborough Park tram stop above the Co Op.

Security Cameras in toilets? How did mcdonalds manage that what with it being against the law and all...
Sounds like a good business opportunity if you were able to get tax breaks with the local council for providing a public service. Locate in busy areas, have attendants and charge 50p for the service. (Think ATM prices)
If you pay attendants a decent wage...say £35,000 to £40,000 you should not have trouble getting help.
Heck, you could even come up with a theme and franchise.
:P
