If I get what I want, I'll be staying in Sheffield, doing LLB Law at SHU. If I get my insurance offer, I shall be doing Law and Criminology at SHU also.

Well, since I was lazy I decided to apply for somewhere I knew I would always get in for.

So i nee DDE to get on the course I wanna do (which is a good course at a uni that is good in the media field but let down by the resat of the uni).

However, I may already have an automatic E so all I need is an A in media (which I was set for).

the other variable is if the automatic E doesn't count, I need an E in psychology, which I might have.

If my media grade drops to a B, I need a D is Pychology, which I might scrape, just.

Last year they were the 26th - so it's a safe bet it'll be around that time.

They'll be out a week after the A level results (as Alex says) so that'll make it the 25th if the A level results are due on the 18th.

it doesn't specifically say, technically you could fail by not doing as well as you'd hoped... for some people that might be getting AAAB and not getting straight A's lol

I hated results day for A levels, I was wound up so tight i nearly burst... then I did worse than I expected and nearly cried thinking I'd end up at some crappy Uni, cant even remember what my backup plan was... thankfully I got a letter from Hallam welcoming me onto my course... yay

I still think I only got onto my course due to my beaming reccomendation and lot of prior knowledge in the area of my studys cus I was extremly low on marks compared to what I was supposed to get...

think i had 160 marks and I needed 220 :?

damn failing maths!

When does this letter arrive? IE would it arrive in Thursday 18th's post? (So I'd know if I was in before I'd found out what I had got)...?

I know that Uni's know before you do, so that they can work out how many places they have for clearing etc...

I'm still ****ting myself over it of course.

The best of luck to all of you who are receiving A level results today. Don't let the likes of Prof Alan Smithers [a professional idiot] tell you that A levels are getting easier - that simply is not true and it demeans all of your hard work.

Anyway, that aside I wish you all the very best. Make sure you open a bottle of champagne to celebrate.

Good Luck everyone!

Can't beleive its a year since I got my results already! Exams aren't getting easier - teaching is getting better hence the better results. Hope you all get what you need to get to the uni of your choice - even if you miss by a bit it's worth ringing them up to find out - i got CCD when I needed BCC but still got onto my first choice course...

Fingers crossed everyone :)

if teaching was getting better how come so many employers complain that many graduates and A level students have such poor basic literacy and numeric skills.

Most students now would really struggle with the old 'O' levels and the associated 'A' levels of that era.

If 'A' levels were so fantastic there wouldn't be moves to change them to something more resembling the french system.

Let's all get real about this, 'A' levels and GCSE's are becoming more "mickey mouse" every year.

I see the point about literacy levels being lower - as a teacher I am often surprised at how this manifests itself in upper school, and definately separates the A/B kids from the C/D borderlines, which is a shame - but needs to be addressed in the lower key stages.

I don't think the exams are getting easier, I think think they are possibly getting easier to take. So many A level courses are modular now it just takes the pressure off. Back when I did my A levels (ooooh 8 years ago) I sat 4, all essay based, and had 2 years worth of stuff to cram into a handful of exams over 4 weeks and i guess it was that little bit more intense.

People will always work hard, and will generally get the results they deserve - be it an A, B or a U and people will always beat themselves up for not getting what they wanted - my B that let down my other 3 A's felt like the end of the world at the time but I got over it.

I was still cursing my choice of degree 6 months in though!!!

My 2 pieces of advice to peeps getting results today:

1. Go away from home to Uni (my biggest regret to date)
2. If you don't like your course have the guts to change (second biggest regret to date)

BEST OF LUCK!!!

Good luck today everyone!!! I hope you get what you want!!! And if things don't turn out as good as you'd hoped (I know that feeling) don't be defeated- I got an E in A-Level History, having been predicted a B, and I seriously thought it was the end of my academic career, it was the lowest mark I'd ever had, things looked so bleak, all my friends got exactly what they wanted... luckily my 2nd choice accepted me and I'm doing an MA now, so keep on chasing what you want!!!

Fingers crossed for you all!!! :) :) :)

WOW Biggan - Well Done!!! Presuming you got into uni (or are continuing to A2 - whichever applies!)

I guess you'll be out partying tonight :)

Good luck to all the others - keep results coming - you know how nosey we all are! :)

And as for exams being "mickey mouse" Big_Dipper - go down to your local sixth form college now and say that to the students and we'll see whether you survive them!! I would agree with absynthfairy that the modular exams are easier to take, which has to be a good thing. Why are you belittling those people who have worked so hard to get their A-Levels? The people who sit the full A-Levels are still in a minority of the population and have worked bloody hard to do so. Lets congratulate them on doing so well instead of telling them that they don't deserve the grades they get

This really annoys me. Whenever someone says exams are easier they are accused of all sorts of nasty things like 'stop demeaning my efforts','you are cruel'. I wish people would realise it is possible for pepole to work very hard and be very clever and at the SAME time acknowldege the exam system has changed over time and it may well not be for the better in all subjects.

That said, I hope everyone on here gets the grades they need to do what they want!

sheff_minx
18-08-2005, 11:59
Yes the system has changed, I acknowledged that in my last post. The changes however, as I said before, have made the exams easier to take, not made the course content easier. The new system takes the pressure off as exams are sat in 4 sessions over 2 years, instead of in one block at the end of the 2 years. I think this is for the better in most subjects and cannot think of an example of where the modular system is not beneficial? I don't want to distract from the nature of this thread though - its for people to celebrate/comiserate their exam sucesses, not for me or others to argue about why they have got the results they did.

they are much easier, just face the truth. If the school leaving population had just suddenly become so much more intelligent then we'd be going through something of an industrial revolution, and we aren't, a few years ago there was a significant step change in those getting higher grades and everyone naturally became very suspicious.

I've done "A" levels and have 3 degrees and the modular stuff is pi$$ easy by comparison.

Sure it's not your fault, but it also demeans people who got 4 "A" grades a number of years ago when the exams were a LOT harder. Standards really have dropped and the reputation of what an "A" level stands for has plummeted.

This is already being discussed on a thread started a few days ago...I think this thread is more about people getting their results than on exam standards.

What a way to spend a birthday!!!!

I got my AS's today and got a b in geography, c in business studies and u in french. Gutted!

Be rate though cos not only have I got a year to kick my are into gear, i can resit them and I'm much better at French now than i was when i sat the exam for the first time.

I still hate exams though! A-Levels are by no means getting easier. I would have accpted those results if I hadn't done any wokr but I know that I prepared so much for these exams and then i suppose i must have just had a bad day or something! Arse!

Just got my results this evening after I got back from Newquay, I was a little apprehensive despite knowing it was an outside chance I'd really mess up since i needed DDE

I ended up with an A grade in Media, which is the subject I liked the most and did some actual work for. What made me happiest about this was that i got full marks on 2/6 modules one last year and one this year, both modules being based off individual research and a project you pick yourself.

I got a C in Psychology and was 7 marks off a B. This was the shock result of my grades as I was expecting an E or a D if I was lucky. I guess I underestimated myself there and it was the thing I'll be celebrating the most come Monday night for my post exam Sheffield based party.

I got an E in ICT which I was expecting. You may laugh at the E grade but I guess you have to bear in mind that of the 6 modules I was supposed to do, I only handed in 4, deciding that my other courses were far more important and thus I prioritised them to the point of ignoring the subject for 3/4 of the year.

All in all, one or two pleasant surprises and nothing to make me upset. I'm glad I've finished and am possibly the proudest I've ever been when I think about my Media grade, I worked hard for it and got the grade I felt I deserved.

Hope everyone else did great and don't let those who say it is getting easier get you down, I don't agree with that. I think that exams are looking for rote learning more and more and it is a direction that some people have a problem with, as it can be argued it isn't 'real' knowledge of a subject, it is like intellect without wisdom. I can see the point of that argument but I still feel that there are those who really stand out in grade because of their ability to know a subject inside out, not just being able to repeat a quote parrot fashion.
