could i pick your brains guys ?! (i am totally useless with this sort of thing !)
my little girl (shes only 5!) loves playing her karaoke dvds and singing along to them - on our old tv we had a microphone slot - so we could just plug in microphone and sing away ! but alas on new tv - no microphone slot .
i thought she could play them on my laptop but cant see any microphone slot , only earphones ?!
is there any way i can plug a microphone into my laptop ? or is their such thing as a USB microphone ??!
sorry for being totally clueless - but any help would make my little pop star really happy!!! - thanks !!!
Maybe your laptop has a mike in it.Mine HP has so I should have a look.
You can buy a USB microphone, try and get hold of one of the ones that comes with rockband or guitar hero as these are just a logitech USB mic and work perfect as such on any computer without Additional drivers

If your laptop has a camera, it should have a microphone, look for a pinhole near the camera.

The built in mic will feedback if you try to enable it for this purpose, it's too close to the speaker. Get a USB mic.

Are you sure the laptop hasn't got a mike input?
They nearly all do you might be thrown off by it being 3.5mm (exactly the same as headphones) instead of the larger jack that many mikes have. If the laptop has what looks like a 2nd headphone socket most likely right next to the other one it will be a mike input.

surely the whole point of the OP's question is that her daughter wants to hold a hand held microphone while singing into it like all her favourite rock stars like Ozzy Osbourne David Lee Roth and PJ Harvey.
I know I wouldn't be impressed if I turned up to a pub to sing on the Karaoke and the KJ said to me "oh the laptop has a built in microphone, you have to hold it up to your mouth, but try not to get spit on the keyboard or screen!.
The answer is, yes you can get USB external microphones, here is one...

If you want one to look like a proper singing microphone you will have to pay an external soundcard, so you can get a jack plug input.

not always, you can get proper looking USB ones, the ones o suggested above are pretty close .

come to think of it Wii and PS2 mic's for band hero range are USB, you might get one in game for a few quid and should be kiddie proof ie. strong made for dropping etc..
Thanks to you all - lots of things there for me to try !!!
