View Full Version : Host city.. Unbiased Facts? or maybe not? host city
SHEFFIELD is celebrating today after the city was chosen as a host city for England's 2018 or 2022 World Cup bid.
But the venue will be Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough - not Blades' ground Bramall Lane.....
why....?
i have to say as a wednesdayite im chuffed to get one over the blades but... if i was to be Unbiased... id say we need it more than then anyway... we need the cash and inprovements... lets just hope its gonna be better that those flag poles on penistone rd...
HeadingNorth 16-12-2009, 16:12 The reasons the bid team will most likely give, are that Hillsborough has a historical record of being used for internationals, that it's closer to a nice big park, that it's easy to reach by tram...
The most likely reason it actually was chosen is that Dave Richards is a football bigwig and a Wednesday fan. If sensible reasons such as the above were in fact used to decide grounds, we wouldn't be talking about Plymouth and Milton Keynes...

As I said on another thread, after listening to the bloke from the world cup bid commitee, it all sounded very strange. Not saying someone took a back hander or anything, it just didn't make sense, the things he was saying, such as having to spend money to bring Hillsborough up to standard versus not having to spend at Brammall Lane?? The park being close by was a plus point?? The hotels??
Just seemed odd, and he looked uncomfortable answering.

CorkerSWFC 16-12-2009, 17:35 I still find is strange why Plymouth has got a crack at the whip me.
They will have to improve there ground significently or build a new one, but wheres the money coming from?.
I also have the feeling that there's going to be a lot of half empty stadiums after the world cup has done with.

They're halfway through redeveloping Home Park.

Panthera 16-12-2009, 17:57 yup id have thought he of all people would have to be unbiased and neutral in this matter, just because it would cause trouble from the red half of the city if the owls won....and look whats happening now.

That's news to the people living in Plymouth as their plans were built upon them finishing the development of Home Park.

as far as i know he is not unemployed. he resigned as a figure involved in the 2018 bid, but still works for the premier league. There is too many fingers in the pie in this bid. Lord Mulwhinney and Lord Triesman for example. What the (removed) do they know about football
JFKvsNixon 16-12-2009, 18:28 Lord Mulwhinney a.............. What the (removed) do they know about football
He's been chairman of the football league for the last 6 years, that's not a bad start eh?

Yes but he was a politician before that and got his position as chairman because of that. You and I have probably forgot more about football than he will ever know

How can you say that of someone whom you haven't met? He has led the football league very well through some extremely turbulent times. Anyway it is right and fitting that the chairman of the football league should be part of the bidding process, as a counterbalance against the premier league.

How many tory politicians do you see at football matches? come on
JFKvsNixon 16-12-2009, 18:48 How many tory politicians do you see at football matches? come on
So are you judging your opinion of Lord Mawhinney upon your ability to spot people at football matches. Lets face facts you don't really care about his ability as a football administrator, you just dislike him for his previous history as a Tory politician; and nothing that he could do would overcome this dislike. Anyway do you not think that this point is a valid one?

canadablade 16-12-2009, 19:33 Blades were never going to get it after the Tevez affair.
Not only do wednesday hate United so does the FA.
Good for the City yes, could they have given say 2 matches to Hillsborough and one to BDTBL probably yes.
Also this is assuming England gets the bid and also assuming that Hillsborough isn't chosen to be cut off the list.
There are 16 venues on the list of which 9 are in the north including Brum and 7 in the south, as they only use 10 venues this means the south will lose 2 and the north will lose 4.
Old Trafford, St James', Eastlands, Stadium of light and either Anfield or Bellend Road will be venues.
So keep clapping your trotters but think it might be the Blades fans having the last laugh when you are struck off the list

That be would be a bit daft. The World Cup would be great for Sheffield and gives us the opportunity to really invest in the city for the betterment of everyone.

Why would you have the last laugh?Even if we lose it the Rustbucket was chosen over Cinderellas Castle, dosn't matter which Sheffield club got it as long as it would bring cash to the city.We do need the cash though.

I don't believe West Ham's ground has been included...
HeadingNorth 16-12-2009, 20:10 isnt man u's chairman also on the prem board?...you saying thats the reason manchester got it aswell?
Old Trafford's inclusion is justifiable on any grounds you care to name, so their chairman being involved wouldn't really make a lot of difference.
Come to that, for all I know it might make perfect sense to choose Hillsborough over Bramall Lane - I've never been inside either of them. But when a senior football bigwig, who's been heavily involved in football admin for many years, is a known Owls fan, there's no chance of the other football bigwigs picking the Blades' ground over the Owls' ground.

My comment about having the last laugh is because of the way wednedayites on here and those posting on the star webpages are giving it the big one.
He who laughs last and all that, anyways like has been said England has to get the World Cup and then they still have to knock a few stadiums off the NORTH list and the rust bucket might be one of them.
This World Cup thing is a nice way for you lot to not to have to worry about your precarious league position and finances etc for a while though, At least till Saturday :D
And yes it would be nice for the city to get some cash influx as long as its spent in the right places and not p*ssed away.

Bit of a difference between beating 10 man Hartlepool with a dodgy penalty in a League one play-off Final as opposed to playing Palace, Wolves or Burnley.
Never mind sunshine when you go down this season you might get another chance to repeat that feat again eh ? :hihi::hihi::hihi:

oh so you mean like how us owls have had to put up with all this crap because when we are losing, but we will end up with the last laugh when you fail in the playoffs again? ahhh get you now ;)
im confident wednesday will be one of the grounds, just a matter of whether the ground will be developed seeing as work should have started in novemeber and all that.

Or maybe it's because Hillsborough has a proven track record of hosting such events in 1966 and 1996 and currently meets more of the FIFA requirements than the sty.
There is some bitter pork and laughable excuses on here at the moment. Its OK for some pigs to spout off about how Hillsborough is a so called "rust bucket" so don't get all upset when Wednesday fans may just want to defend it.
Hillsborough 3 Sty 0
1966
1996
2018
Stockers 17-12-2009, 09:39 Blades fans get stick for been bitter, does this just not prove a point.
We have to fight for everything whereas Wednesday seem to be the darlings of the FA, to even consider selecting Hillsborough over Bramall Lane (the oldest sports stadium still in use - how much more history do they need!!!), Bramall Lane has been developed slowy over the last 5yrs and was planning great things for the future, Wednesday get some kid off the 'cross to put together a power point presentation of how the ground 'might look' with £22m worth of investment and are chosen as the host ground for Sheffield - UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I just remembered why i have no interest in England Football team, or the FA and their jobs for the boys and mutual back scratching - despite been the scene of a flood in June 2007 and the scene of the worst football disaster in UK Shores Hillsborough is yet again chosen and Wednesday will once again be dragged out of the s**t hole they got themselves in WHAT A JOKE!!
As long as its in sheffield i don't get a hoot which ground its at! :D

I can honestly say that I have never, ever, come across a more narrow minded and joy less set of fans than United. Your persecution complex is quite something to behold.
No matter what the occasion or what the scenario, there's always someone working behind the scenes to undermine you lot isnt there? I wouldnt mind, but why exactly make you think that as a club your important enough to warrant such Machiavellian attention?

From a supporter of a club who nearly went into melt down over the Di Canio senario its almost laughable "If this has been a Man U player he would have gt a slap on the wrists" - "its not fair, the refs are against us" etc, etc, etc!
You Wednesday fans bitch and moan as much as the next man.
MisIngdPoin 17-12-2009, 10:04 typical winge and moan from the blunts. the final desision wont be made till 2013 so theres no point anybody getting exited yet. it could be in sheffield and thats the important thing. strafford could end up with egg on his mush if he fails to raise the dosh and i can see this been a distinct possibility.
be careful how you celebrate owls :)
Ousetunes 17-12-2009, 10:06 Strange decision.
A bit like saying to Jenson Button "Which car will you be driving, Jase, the knackered old Lada or the Maclaren F1?"
"Erm, think I'll take the Lada, thank you."

So to prove a point that Wednesday are just as bad, you dredge up an event from 1998 (thats nearly 12 years ago, btw).

Jet Owl 72 17-12-2009, 11:27 Some of United fans on here just come accross like a younger smaller brother that throws a paddy every time the older bigger brother gets something they want.
Despite being a passionate Wednesday fan I try and remain objective but sadly for the decent United fans a way too sizeable chunk of the trophy dodgers support come accross as being very bitter.
Hillsborough meets more FIFA criteria apparently. End of. Deal with it.
BigTeeOwls 17-12-2009, 12:07 First of all, Hillsborough is renowned around the world (1966 world cup games) plus the fact the FA dislike United as much as us Wednesdayites do, also the fact that Hillsborough park is a stones throw away.
How would the fans soak up the World cup fever, at the farm? There is no where adequate for big screens, beer tents, no where to park!
Best decision every made in my book, plus the fact Dave Richards has finally repaid the club with something, after he nearly drove us to the brink.
Investment is rumoured to be just around the corner plus the possibility of the ground getting a facelift, hasn't turned out to be a bad week in the end!

I was never in doubt, the in favours for Hillsborough compared to Bramall Lane were massive.
