Eeeugh. Never, EVER buy oysters this far inland, unless you want to die. Refrigerated vans are all v well and good, but I imagine there aint exactly a lot of oyster eaters in these parts...

I get mine imported from the gironde...:D

Never eat oysters in months without an "R" in the month.
That means avoid oysters in May, June, July, August. Large amounts of bacteria in the water during those months due to the heat and temperature of the water. Right now, if you eat them raw, they should be okay. Always eat them cooked in the summer unless you can swallow e-colli.

I like them steamed with a touch of tabasco sauce and a cold beer.
What is your pleasure?? steamed, raw, in a stew?? You didn't say how you were going to eat them? As an aphrodisiac maybe with champagne on New years Eve?

Castle market is a goodplace for oysters and Barnsley market very good..

The worst places...Morrisons...Tescos....Asda....all supermarkets

And the r thing with refridgeration dosnt count anymore as 95% of oysters are farmed

J.H.Mann at Hillsborough is the premier fishmonger in Sheffield. No question about it. Quality and service second to none. Nuts to your supermarkets - for these guys it's a vocation and a family business. I've never had their Oysters, but their Mussels are outstandingly good both in terms of quality and value for money. The only Mackerel better was one I caught myself in Cornwall and cooked right on the beach.
Make the journey to Hillsborough, you won't be dissapointed.

Try the fish mongers just off the parkway (Parkway wholesale markets fish/meat) Its where they supply restaurants/cafes etc etc.
Good prices as well with regular deliveries of stock.
And its open to the general public.

Waitrose always have them and they're decent , but if you love your oysters you're better off looking at Thornham Oysters (online), I ordered mine from them at xmas and ,whilst much dearer than the supermarket , they tasted loads better and were huge.
You get what you pay for and it's worth waiting for the treat! (and the "r" in the month thing is so true, but I thought it was flavour related)

I lived in Crookes last year and never saw a fishmongers. It might have closed. On the other hand, I might have just walked past it every day for a year, totally oblivious to its existence. Either is possible

The shop in question is opposite the Co-Op by a crossing point and I think one would smell it if it was open. It was excellent, at one time, when it was owned by the chap who put "Frank" the sou'westered model on the pavement but it deteriorated in later ownership, and I think, closed some time ago.

Look, I may appear stupid here (as usual) but, If what you do with oysters is open the mouth, tilt back the head, pour in the oyster, and swallow, how can you get any taste? And if you do get a taste, what does it taste of? It appears to be a lump of slime that costs a fortune. You may assume from this that I've never had one. I would take a lot of persuading to try.

So when you drink beer/tea/coke etc, you tilt your head back, pour in the liquid and swallow....

Try oysters you never know you might like em...

Oh no, I am craving them now. I would recommend Mann in Hillsbrough; really fab fish; but you have to phone or go early as all of his best fish is gone by 11.

Super place. Support small local businesses they are a dying breed.

They'll be much fresher than ones coming from the east coast or scotland then?

As long as they are still alive, they'll live for up to a week in the fridge. And if they are alive, then they are fresh.

You can eat oysters all year round. I've certainly done so with no bother.

Reading this makes me wanna buy some now. :P

I've only ever tried oyster once in my life, and it is delicious actually. Well... I can see how some people find it too slimy or think that it smells too 'fishy'. Oysters should be served cold, which dispels that fishy smell you get when fish are left at room temp. Ugh.

Thanks I think I will follow that advice! Once again Sheffield forum has all the answers :)

Indeed. JH Mann at Hillsborough is still trading however and as I've said before offers quality and service second to none. I bought monkfish there for a seafood risotto a couple of days ago. Superb.

I actually think it was still there a year ago.. I used to live in Crookes and vaguley remember seeing "Frank". obviously I didn't introduce myself but I'm guessing the guy i saw was called Frank...
Thats doesn't really help aswer if it is there now.. go for a roadtrip to crookes and find out!!
