View Full Version : Padley Gorge Whereabouts?
Henrietta 08-08-2005, 09:55 AM Was thinking of a run out there today, but can anybody help me by being more specific over where it is..?
I've this map on Multimap (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=426000&Y=379000&width=700&height=400&gride=&gridn=&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=GB&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=0&scale=25000&up.x=284&up.y=7); can somebody pinpoint where we would be best wandering, and where to park? :)
miniminch 08-08-2005, 10:03 AM Go to grindleford station and start there. Or park up at the longshaw estate at the other end (near the fox house) and start your walk from there.
From grindleford, just go left from facing the totley tunnel . You cant go wrong and the nice ppl in the cafe will assist if you have any queries!
I'm not usually so helpful - so count yourself lucky
Once you are in the gorge you can walk one side of the river one way and the other side of the river back. Its hard to go wrong as there are few paths off to other areas and the sides of the gorge are steep.
Yesterday, I walked through the gorge, over the top of the hill and across the moor (blacka) to dore and caught a bus to town.
:D

brewnog 08-08-2005, 11:55 AM Be careful where you park, - you're supposed to park right up on the kerb if you're on the road to the north side of Padley Gorge (where there's usually an ice-cream van), one of my friends got 3 points because she was too far out into the road.

There are white lines along a lot of that road and technically (ie according to the Highway Code) you're not supposed to cross them. So....anyone caught parking on the verge who has crossed a white line to get there is liable to a fine. :(
Saying that, people do park along there all the time, seemingly untroubled by the inconvenience of returning to the car to find a nasty notice affixed to the screen. It's a risk tho..

Not the friendliest of people but a smashing bowl of chips :)
I love Paddly Gorge - been going there ever since I was a baby! Autumn is the best time to go as the trees turn a million different colours.
Internetowl 08-08-2005, 12:33 PM there's a perfectly good pay and display at Surprise View - only costs a couple of quid - seems a bargain to me - better than a ticket...
it'll be lovely today at the gorge - lots of insects :)

"If you want white coffee, please state it - we're not mind readers" - I love going to that place when I visit.
Internetowl 08-08-2005, 04:03 PM its great in the winter - come in frozen, the fire blazing and steaming hot drinks, toast and other goodies...

Internetowl 08-08-2005, 05:30 PM its local charm....good job they've stopped burning witches :)
Henrietta 08-08-2005, 07:43 PM If you park at that pay-and-display at suprise corner, is it possible to walk (off road) to the corner further back towards Sheffield - is it Toad's mouth or frogs stones or something  :P the road has a sharp bend and the brook runs right next to/under it. Could you wander up there and next to the brook? Or is it not suitable?
Internetowl 08-08-2005, 07:49 PM its Toad's mouth - the funny frog rock - the stream is Burbage brook and there is a pathway up to the end of Stanage Edge - nice walk in the winter, when the snow blows in the wind ....its nice in the summer too...

On the opposite side of the gorge (Froggat Road side) you're allowed to park for free, but you're supposed to go right up on the 'pavement', otherwise it's a 3-pointer!
willman 23-08-2005, 02:13 PM went to grindleford station to park & was welcomed by the rotund gent from the cafe stopping everyone.
went to walk padley gorge & took the wrong turn ended up in Hathersage, all in all nice walk will return & follow the track marked Padley Gorge now that i've seen it.
Hopman 23-08-2005, 03:35 PM Park at the bottom of a hill; your last tired steps will be downhill.
