Hi

Looking at potentially becoming a Lorry Driver however the costs for your Lorry Licence are fairly pricey.

I like the idea of not having a boss looking over your shoulder, the idea of seeing a bit of the country (and perhaps Europe), and not forgetting the chance to behave like an inconsiderate idiot on the Motorway and giving hand gestures to car drivers.

So any truck drivers out there. is there much work in this industry, and is the initial outlay of cash worth it? I don't want to pay a fortune in fees to find their is no work.

So what is this industry like?

So what is this industry like?theres plenty of work but if your planning on doing your own thing its very cut throat so to speak & container work should be avoided unless you can drop on with the right company as a subby, average take home pay including a couple of nights out if you just worked for a company rather than subbing using your own lorry works out around £400 plus per week. if you fancy working for someone else rather than going it alone drop me a pm i'll give you a contact to possibly get you started:thumbsup:

My dad was a trucker for over 25 years and loved every year of it, ok it can be hard and stressful at times but he was very sad to leave when he retired last year. When he got fed up of a firm and left, by next day he was in another job with someone els, same with my friend who a trucker he did the same in August this year.
I know plenty of work going about has also i have best friend who has worked for two places since she left school and always asking me if i know any people that want work, she only changed jobs has moved away but got a job a week after even thou she works in office but knows plenty of jobs going with diff places. But she will be happy to also give you any contacts if you email me and i will pass them on no problem, she does know a lot about this business and knows a lot of people who own business also around the UK to point you in the right direction also any other question you want to know.

I hope "she" doesn't actually drive the lorrys (only joking).

So you think it is worth the outlay?

Thats the thing, the cost. If there is work, then I'm happy to pay for course fees

just bare in mind a lot of companys want 2years experience for insurance purposes, the money is steadily dropping to, when i passed about 3yrs ago the average pay for class 1 was about £12.50 an hour it about £8.50 now. like i said a few years ago you would have been guaranteed £500 take home but youll be hard pushed to find that now.

Hi mate just thought i'd let you know that all these training courses will say there is the potential to earn £500 a week and all that but the first hurdle you will find is that most employers require you to have 2 years experiance due to insurance. The money has come down considerabily in the last couple of years and there is more and more EU regulations being bought in like the periodic training you have to do of 35hours every 5 years to be able to drive commercially. Also i think new learners have to also do a cpc test aswell as the theory and driving one. Good money can be made if you work for yourself or pass your class 1 but you have got to pass your class 2 first.
Alot of new drivers end up working for agencys but they make all the money.
I'm self employed but let me tell you it took me 18 mts to find work after passing my test which was not very good for morale,I ended up on cement mixers for my first job on £6 an hour!!
My opinion is if you think you can pass your test and then expect to get a job earning good money straight away then think again as it is not how it is.
Don't want to put you off but only do it if you are prepared to put in alot of effort and hard work. Good luck

Being a truck driver only a few years ago was pretty much easy life working for agencies when and what you wanted, you could also demand more pay to do the job.Hgv positions were everywhere.
The reality of a new driver will mean doing agency work and many of the hours during the dark as alot of firms are now shifting to nights.Pay seems to be dwindling too.

If your flexible with the hours you will work, theres still work about but a second and third language may help as few warehouse staff speak much english.
Oh and you will need a secertary to do the mountains of paperwork,an advisor to workout your driving hours and alot of patience out on the roads as sticking to the speed limits will automatically entitle you to plenty of mindless abuse.
As a class 2 driver you should expect to earn about £7 an hour day rate and class 2 £8.
Driving an hgv carries alot of responsibility which allows for no mistakes or your off to jail.
Collecting trolleys at asda pays £6 odd an hour you work it out!
