pattricia, to make it your home page, when you go to www.google.co.uk go to the 'Tools' menu at the top of the window, then click the 'Use current' button that you will see towards the top of the menu that appears.

Of course, you can also do this for the Sheffield Forum - much more preferable :D

Or alternatively, for international results: www.google.com

www.google.co.uk does international as well as UK only searches. www.google.com only does international.

I hate that....

So much so, that I've ammended our hosts file to redirect all google requests to point to google.com.

I use the google toolbar which I find pretty useful. If I ever want to search for something, then the search bar is already there and waiting.

tbh i hate loads of toolbars, i prefer to stick with the normal firefox ones....specially as most of em are spyware and malware anyway.....i leave all toolbars far away :)

and it doesnt take much really in firefox to click file/ new tab / home - to open up my google search, not when you click / type as fast as i do :)

Google.com is the way forward as it includes UK results as well as all the others rather than just UK ! DUH

They've (Google) changed how they redirect.

Editing the hosts file no longer works:(.

Sooooo....

Use the IP address of google.com (66.249.93.104 (http://66.249.93.104/)) instead:thumbsup:.
Don't click on anything that says "Google.com" or "Google Home" though, as it will redirect you to a local google based on your IP;).

Or, at the bottom of the google homepage on google.co.uk click on 'Go to Google.com' and it will not redirect you next time.

Actually, you never get to leave the IP 66.102.9.99 (get Firefox & the ShowIP extension and look in the bottom right hand corner....The IP never changes from 66.102.9.99, whereas google.com's IP addr is 66.249.93.104);).

I've also found another, none redirecting IP for Google that uses full international searches @ 216.239.37.99 (http://216.239.37.99/).

What's everyone got against google.co.uk?

sniperwookie

It doesn't have as many holiday logos (http://www.google.com/intl/en/holidaylogos.html) :)

Nothing;).

It's just that I'd rather decide where I visit, rather than where my IP and a script decides I should be:thumbsup:.

Thanks for all your replies to "how do I find Google ?" Some of the questions on the computer site are so technical, that you dont like asking simple things.I was coming on tonight toask how I get to the "Home Page" but my replies were all there when I got there. Thanks once again, your knowledge is invaluable.

It is such a good question though! I mean, how do you find a search engine, if you don't know any search engines?

It's a chicken and egg scenario :)

Question from accross the pond, you mention "Home Page" would that be the same as "favorites" ?

i think of "home Page" as setting the page you want to come on first thing when you turn on your pc, like most people have CNN news set to come on automatically!

<pedant>
Well, technically, the home page is the page your browser brings up when you fire it up. What appears when you turn your PC on is the background, or desktop.

Assuming for a minute that you are not in the Netherlands and the "awesome" comment was slightly sarcastic... what ISP are you with?

you could also try www.dogpile.com; it searches, google, ask, yahoo and several others. They have also done research on how much more effective they are than google et al.
