As far as I am aware Miner Road is still open. Going back to the late 70’s, can anyone remember the name of the “blues” in Havelock Square? There was a huge black women there that would serve cans of special Brew for a pound. That place seemed to go ages before it got raided. More than once I saw a well-known night club owner in there. Not alone you understand, under the command of a handler. Used to move the heavy bars etc. owdlad 08-08-2005, 07:54 Originally posted by BoppinBruce There used to be an elephant helping out in a steel manufacturers just round from Wicker before the second world war. Not alone you understand, under the command of a handler. Used to move the heavy bars etc. That would be Tommy Wards elephant, and is well documented as a fact not just an urban leg end ;) Foxprom 08-08-2005, 07:57 the steel fime was Thomas Wards (tommy wards) and they did have in service one or more elephants, used for pulling the carriages loaded with steel around the comapny yards, in a similar style to the pit ponies and shire hoirses which are atill evident and remembered to this day. didnt see it only know some of the history, but certain is did happen and exist not on the legend of urbia list. BoppinBruce 08-08-2005, 07:58 Is there a link anywhere to it does anyone know? Foxprom 08-08-2005, 08:00 as if by magic i was looking for it and found this http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=712 owdlad 08-08-2005, 08:01 Originally posted by Foxprom as if by magic i was looking for it and found this http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.id=712 Yep that's the one  Ya beat me to it Foxprom  Foxprom 08-08-2005, 08:06 quite amazing realy to think of elephants in the steel works but having only memories of a kid seeing the elephants at a circus they did seem to be very aglile in respect of their size and of course the blue peter safaris always showed them carrying trees around the jungle and making tea, so anything is possible. some very good pictures of the historical interest on the sheffield libraries photo site. BoppinBruce 08-08-2005, 08:21 Thank you for that, Lizzie Ward eh..........wonderful stuff! Internetowl 08-08-2005, 09:19 there was also the one about the three lads (brothers) camping out at Rivelin near the dams. They all went to sleep and in the morning they awoke to a scream and one of them were missing...he was never found. It was reported to the police and despite a large search they drew a blank....20 years later the boy turned up at the bottom of one of the newly opened up caverns at Castleton...no one ever worked out how he got there, it was said by locals that the dams had claimed him for people who lived in the caves... :suspect: 40summat 08-08-2005, 10:36 In Aston there is a big old house behind high walls opposite the church, us kids were told that many years ago 'some choir boys scared the cleaner who was brushing the stairs causing her to fall down the steps and die. they cut her up and stuffed the body up the chimney and you can often see a red hand appear at the window'. We'd dare each other to go up to the house alone and try to look in the downstairs windows, the internal shutters were always drawn though which added to the mystery. The owner was an old lady who you hardly ever saw, known as the 'white lady' i feel sorry for the old girl now but i suppose we were never malicious, it was just the thrill of getting to the house and back alive. I think the fact that the house was next to the woods localy known as the Loony Woods did'nt help. Mathom 08-08-2005, 20:09 I used to work in the old Tommy Wards building(Albion House) and they have pictures there of the Elephant. Also, there was a story that some of the fittings came from an old liner and there was a ghost in the building, and the cellars used to flood with water from the Don. The one who used to own a yellow roller.;) The "blues" I remember in Broomhall circa 1977/78. Jordans (aka the old mans) was on the corner of Upper Hanover Street and Broomspring Lane - demolished when UHST was made into dual carriageway. Jordans missus, Sweetie used to sell goat curry and chilli fish. I used to drink "Red Stripe" - a lot of the old West Indian guys used to drink something called Nourishment. Music was usually 60's ska. Lovely place, very friendly. On the Square (both downstairs in the cellar) were "Sunnys" which was usually pretty cool, and "Solomons" which played very loud dub reggae. If you were a white guy they automatically assumed you'd come to buy some blow - could get a bit scary in there. Seem to recall stories of a killing when somebody called "Popeye" was slashed with a cutlass and bled to death in the street - took the fire brigade quite a time to hose all the blood down the drain. rubydazzler 08-08-2005, 23:41 I have a vague memory of my father telling me that "The Boilers" on Well Rd at Heeley (now demolished) got its nickname because Lizzie Ward was delivering a boiler to someone on Gleadless Road and it ran out of control and crashed into the pub ... (two urban legends for the price of one there :P) Longcol 09-08-2005, 00:01 Urban legends in my local - the number of folk who have made a killing at the bookies, always win on the bandit etc etc...... |
