i have just seen what i think is a dragonfly,it was about 3 inches long about 1/2 inch wide and a loveley bright green colour i had beautiful transparent wings,i have never seen one before, anyone know what they are called.
It does sound like it may be a dragonfly. Did you notice if it had 2 pairs of wings?
I was in the Sherwood Forest visitors centre some years ago, and a great big one (> 3 inches) landed on this womans back and curled up its tail. Somebody mentioned that she had 'something on her' and she swatted and hit it, realised how big it was and then proceeded to have a screaming fit in the little shelter we were all standing in.
I think the dragonfly must have found it highly amusing :)

There are loads of dragonflies down by the canal, some of them are huge, I see loads when I'm waiting for the tram at the Arena tramstop.
get loads round my pond as well as damsel flys.
adds a little bit of something to the summer.
I saw a huge dragonfly down Paddly Gorge the other day. Was beautiful :)
