That Rainbow skit was an "in-house" bit of fun for the cast to watch at Xmas. The BBC used to put together a Christmas tape of similar, specially shot stuff for their staff. An example of the BBC Xmas tapes is when John Cleese did a cameo on "Doctor Who".
