I have had this strange feeling like its my sinuses cos my nose is always stuffy when I wake up then I get this strange numbing feeling around my eye socket and my nose and sometimes my ear is affected, always having to unblock like when you are on a plane and have to hold your nose and make your ears pop, its the strangest feeling and sometimes I feel sickly with it too. Anyone suffer from something similar and if so what can be done about it?

Yes I do!! But my ears never pop - even on a plane! Funnily enough, I'm going for Hopi Ear treatment this week - supposed to clear sinuses - will let you know. Also, dairy products cause sinus problems.

The first time i got sinusitis my skull ached so much i thought it was a wisdom tooth, could'nt sleep for days.
now when i recognise the symptoms i just use stuff from the chemist
sinutab or similar that reduces the inflamation, there's plenty of them to choose from.
blowing my nose more often when i'm feeling a bit snotty helps too.
Don't let it develop Jillybabes because it's bloody murder if you get it bad.

I have suffered from sinusitis but also have had trigeminal neuralgia.

Different remedies are available for the sinuses and things like sinutab can help although there is nothing around that can clear congestion at present.

they say they can but they don't!

I find proper regular excercise helps. The sort that gets you puffed out, sweaty and snotty ;)

Or if that's too much like hard work - Put 6 drops of Olbas Oil into a cup of boiling water next to your bed at night

my hubby has suffered for years with sinus problems - like he continually has a bad cold, nose and eyes streaming and wakes up conjested - has tried various treatments, including prescriptions but nothing has worked. i hope you manage to get sorted out - i know it can make you feel utterly miserable

i will get him some olbas oil Strix, anything is worth a try!

Ok, this is more serious then, so here's the long winded answer ;)

Do his symptoms clear up or improve if you're on holiday?

Could it be an allergy to dust/pets that causes the problem?

Do you vacuum your mattress regularly? Have you tried steam cleaning? Do you have feather pillows? Do you wash them regularly? Is a feather allergy the problem?

Ionisers help to keep allergens out of the air, and steam cleaning kills dust mites.

There are also plug in products such as a 'breathe easy' (about the size of a plug in nightlight) that take cartridges with oils on. they are more effective than the olbas oil, but more expensive.

I'd type more but that was probably boring enough for now ;)

not at all boring, very useful.

i will try one of the plug ins.

we don't have feather pillows as i am allergic to feathers - howeverl, we do have three dogs - as my hubby has suffered for a number of years and our oldest dog is 12, then you mayhave hit on something here! i think he will continue to suffer though as he loves our dogs probably as much as me!

Try to bath/vac the dogs regularly, banish them to downstairs only :( , wash their bedding once (preferably twice) a week, and invest in a steamer (and a Sebo vacuum cleaner)

Or it may be easier for hubby to try anti-histamines ;)

Jillybabes

I had the same problem and saw the doctor. He said that it was caused by my cigarette habbit and gave me a prescription. It cleared up within a couple of days and I have not had the problem reoccur for three months. He did warn me that if it did not clear up, I could go deaf. See your doctor. :)

A friend of mine suffers with block sinuses which affects her ears, eye area and also her balance when its really bad. She started using hopei ear candles and she said they have made a big difference and her problem has eased substantially.

You can get this done in salons but she buys them in the herbalist on Surrey street next to Mama's and Leonis pizza place. She says she uses the experience as a bit of a relaxation session too now (as I think it takes about half an hour each ear) which is a good idea too.

Also look at diet. I used to get really bad sinusitis which came to an end after I eliminated mucous forming foods; the worst of these are bread, cheese, milk; cows milk and such like are particularly bad. Goats milk and cheese are far better because the content is apparently more in line with our dietary needs.

I used to be really well clued up on the technical reasons but am afraid if you want the explanations you'll either have to go to a naturopath or try to find something on the web. I continue to do this because it works and fits in with my views about avoiding unnecessary medication.

i had blockes sinuses some 10years ago, which was precsribed as seasonal rhinitus.they prescribed drugs, inhalers, sunis squirter things which had limited success.
eventually i couldnt sleep laid down & when i did sleep it was only for short periods, obviously i couldn't breathe thru my nose.
my doctors ignored the fact i had pets 'sos i,ve had them all my life.
howver this was around the time that Leigh environmental were polluting the air near me.
end result was surgery to brun out the bits up my nose(membranes thats it).
never looked back. first thing i ate after was dairy milk - the taste was fabulous after 3 years of little taste.

I get exactly those symptoms from both house dust, dog and cat allergies.

Wash your pillows, vacuum and steam clean your mattress. Ban any pets from the bedroom. If that would traumatise them, get a babygate and have them sleep on the landing ;)

put a few drops of olbas oil in a cup of boiling water next to the bed at night

good advice even if you don't suffer.house dust & horse hairs gets me wheezing as well as blocked up.

If that sounds like alot of hassle, especially if you're not sure it would help, try taking antihistamines for a week and see if you improve. If you do, you'll know it's a dust/pet allergy ;)

My Dad has had a lifetime of sinus problems and every 10 years or so gets so fed up of the headaches he goes to have an op where they bore holes up his nose into his sinuses to allow everything to drain and equalise. He swears that everything else is just a short term palliative, and that the only answer is to see an ENT surgeon and go through a couple of days of discomfort to actually sort it out.

I know that I always advocate this kind of thing, but asking for a referral to an ENT bod will get you answers, even if surgery isn't the answer for you. You'll be asked whether you've tried any allergy treatments though, so maybe try these while on the waiting list.

I had sinusitus for years without knowing it. always clearing my throat and a stuffy nose.
A couple of years ago I went to the doc who arranged a scan of my head!! Low grade chronic sinusitus
He prescribed a nasal spray.....NASACORT.. which is great.
On the question of diet, I have found that if I drink spirits or wine which has been aged in oak barrels I get the most horrendous blocked nose for hours............so they're out

My husband has suffered from nasal & ear probelms for years. He got so fed up he asked for a referral to E.N.T.After examininghis nose & ears the specialist said that he had a large nasal polyp blocking his nose.He went in overnight to have it removed and has never had any trouble since.

I sometimes have blocked sinuses. I use a device called the RC-Cornet-N to unblock them. It works really well. You breath out through the Cornet and it causes pressure oscillations. This shakes up the mucous in the sinuses and lets it drain off. It is a bit like a plunger for the sinuses.
Perhaps it can help you.

Vac religiously and put a few drops of olbas oil on a cotton wall and hoover it up so when you hoover, it gets warm inside the bag/vac and will also help.

I have nasty sinus and eustacian problems which causes real problems with my ears (I keep having lots of pain / going temporarily deaf etc.) which had me off to an ENT specialist earlier this year. After having a camera shoved up my nose (no it's not very comfortable!) I found I have very narrow eustacian openings which is causing the problem. Not much can be done about such things but it's worth checking to see if that sort of thing is the problem or if it's something they can fix easily :D

I have just been searching the net for the same problem. I am really suffering today, it feels like my nose is freezing up inside and sounds like I have a cold 24/7. Calling the docs later I think!

I have perrenial rhinitis but I just have to put up with it. Causes cataarh in the mornings. Takes an hour to clear one's throat, as it were. Tried a spray but no good. Apparently it causes snoring, especially after 6 pints of guinness.

Have heard 9 pints solves the problem:D

I have a very petite nose so every time I cry or get a cold, the nasal gunk gets stuck up in my sinuses and threatens to become a full-fledged sinus infection. My secret weapons are decongestants and saline nasal spray; haven't had to go to the doctor for a sinus infection for years thanks to that combo!

What sort of spray did you use?
