They make my nose bunged up and my skin itch. What has sudddenly gone wrong and how can I sort the matter out without having to rehome them? Its only just started happening over the last month or so. I have kept them for many months now and they have never bothered me.
Any ideas

hi, have you changed any of the bedding or used any product's (shampoo an such) that could have caused it.

You could take antihistamine, it might help.

Are you sure its the pigs? I get like that when the heating is on or the fire high, you could try some antihistamines, it could be anything to do with the pigs either...the bedding or hay that they sleep on.

Is it since you've had the rescue ones in the house?

yeah but it started with 2 others that were rehomed a few weeks ago. I have two cages in the loft. I have always kept my piggys outdoors and now i have 4 in the loft and 2 outside so i wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that i have them in the house?

Unfortunately you can get an allergy at any point- in fact it's impossible to get an allergy the first time that you meet something. Biochemically an allergy happens when your body makes an antibody to something that's actually harmless and then at the next exposure your antibodies kick in and push your body into a histamine-mediated inflammatory cycle, hence the itchy skin, puffy eyes and bunged up nose.

It's not unknown for someone to suddenly become allergic to something after many years of exposure, which can be desperately upsetting if what you become allergic to is a firm favourite. My OH didn't start ending up in hospital any time he went near fish until late in his teens despite having eaten fish since weaning.

However, are you certain that it's the piggies that are making you itch? Have you changed anything around them or did this coincide with starting a new batch of a continued product?

Loft is converted so no. and it happened before i put some of the rescues in there.
Im going to see how it goes for a while longer, as 2 rescues are being rehomed tomorrow then that leaves me two girls in the loft.
I feel particularyly worse tonight as I am really bunged up. i had them out for longer than normal.

I suddenly became allergic to rabbit and cat fur. The rabbit I had used to make me come out in blisters on my hands and arms, I just had to wear gloves and long sleeves.

Cat hair can make me very unwell, I wheeze and my lips swell, it first happened at a mates moving in party and the old owners had cats in the house. The reactions got worse until I refused to go to anyones house who had a cat, strangely 8 years on and the reactions seem to be less severve :loopy: They still make me itchy but I can now sit for a couple of hours in a cat household and some cats do not bother me in the slightest. Maybe it is a specific gp that is making you react?

Time of year? My husband has been told he has autumn/winter hayfever, because of all the spores that are about.

No no chance that Im pregnant well theres always a chance as nothing is 100% foolproof but I hope not lol. My sinuses are so sore this morning. Sudafed has helped a lot. I dont want to be taking medication just so I can keep them though. I had brushed fudge last night and her hairs were all over me. As soon as Iput them all away and changed my clothing I started to feel better. But my sinuses still hurt.

What do you think I should do? Im scared of going up there to play with them today. I will just feed them for today and wait till my nose stops hurting and then will give it one last shot. If I have no luck then i think im going to have to give them up which is so upsetting as I love them all. I am thinking about them to . Because this keeps happening, i am very reluctant to go and get them all out again so they arn't getting as much human interaction as they used to.

OH seems ok and so does my little girl. Its just me. Maybe it was worse than normal last night because I had them all out at once. Not so sure about it being the time of year. It has never happened before. I just feel really fed up about the situation.

2 Rescues were rehomed yesterday and I have just been and cleaned out their cage. I never touched any pigs I just used a dustpan and brush and got all the woodshavings out and iv started itching again. Thinking about it, someone donated a large bale of woodshavings to me so maybe its them. what do you think?

I have always used woodshaving but maybe it could possibly be something to do with this particular bale the woman gave me. Maybe its dustier than normal. I dont know im just trying to think up of excuses so I dont have to part with them. They are my babies especially the ones iv had since the day they were born.

There is no reason though that you may have just developed a wood allergy, in the same way you may have only just developed a piggy allergy.
