View Full Version : Can a song make you cry?

Following on from the 'power ballad' question I suppose:

I once wept openly to 'Total Eclipse of The Heart'... (I've sobered up since then).

Just wondered if there was a song that makes you cry and why? (other than drunkeness of course).

The Johnny Cash version of NiN's 'Hurt'.

I was in Borders book shop in Leeds about a year ago and they played it. I had to retreat to a quiet corner (Oracle RDBMS books, basement) and have my cry there.

So yes, it can, and does! :)

It's not the song rather the associations I attach to the song which have an affect on me and the way I see it, the choice is mine whether I want to allow the song to have that affect.

"I can't live, if living is without you" by Neilson, always does it for me. Kinda reminds me of a friend who died in a car crash years ago, which is probably why.

Theres a song that makes me cry each time - it reminds me of my last girlfriend. It's from a classic film too. . . . 'Ding, Dong the witch is dead, the witch is dead, the wicked witch is dead'.

Lots and lots of songs make me cry. I have a break up song for the end of every relationship and even listening to that song 5 years after can make me bawl.

Then again...I've been known to cry at neighbours so it's nothing special to cry during songs

Sic cos I'm a blokey bloke - you know - we do not cry and all that rot.

There are quite a few songs that make me cry these days. Hero has to be one of those that touch my heart, but - stupid as it may sound - quite a few linkin park songs cos they are so close to the bone.

Now I sound like a girl. LOL

That is such a lovely song - I think it's got to be the most beautiful song ever for me.

Several songs by Marion make me feel so emotional I often end up crying - also songs by the Only Ones, esp "Prisoners", "Someone who Cares", "Out There in the Night", and loads more. For me, it's a combination of lyrics and music just hitting some emotional resonance in me.

If I'm feeling particularly sensitive, lots of songs can set me off eg Frankie goes to Hollywood's "The Power of Love", Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven", the Clash's "Stay Free".

I sound like a really soppy get now - I'm not that bad, honestly!

The song 'Somewhere' from West Side Story always brings at least one tear to my eyes as it reminds me of a relationship I was in which ended due to personal circumstances rather than because it wasn't working out between us. That song still has the same effect on me even tho it was almost 10yrs ago when we were together! Neither of us wanted it to end, and it was only the idea that we could sort things out one day which helped me get over her.

Others can make me cry too. Theres one by Spike Milligan that makes me laugh so much that I cry..... :D

For me it would'nt be about what what mood i was in but the song whether it reminded me of something close to me. eg If the song on was the favourite of a departed relative which was played at their funeral something like that or if it was a song which summed up lots of things about your relationship with someone.

Redrobbo, sometimes I think I need a good old wail and weep!

Nothing like driving along the road with the stereo full blast, singing at top volume (out of tune I might add), with tear in eye to some god awful tune, that for some reason has 'sentimental value' in your life...

Clears the air sometimes.

Just make sure you're on your own when you're doing it (i.e you're not a Taxi driver or the like)

Ayup Deavon, I know exactly what you mean. That old ballad, 'Danny Boy', does it for me. It doesn't have to be on the radio or car stereo - I've just got to sing it to myself sometimes! (Oh, and always when I'm on my own of course!). It was the favourite song of a long-departed favourite Aunt & Uncle of mine.

And then 'Abide With Me' sung at funerals will always set me off a-weeping.

But just listen to Sinead O'Connor's rendition of the Elton John song "Sacrifice". At the end of the song, she repeatedly sings the extra words "I gave my heart". That's it - she's touched my heart-strings, and I'm emotionally drained by then!

{Talks to oneself: 'Oh stop it now lad, you're gettin' all maudlin' like'}.

I don't think a song itself has ever made me cry (although I've seen my sister reduced to tears by the Crazy Frog) but songs linked with an emotional time do.

Everything But The Girl: Missing (like the deserts miss the rain) does it to me every time - it feels physically painful :|

No Doubt - Don't Speak has made me cry quite a few times over the yrs, particularly the line

And talking about songs played at funerals, I can't hear Greensleeves anymore without wanting to cry as it was played at my Dads funeral.

Don McLean's "American Pie" makes me cry, cos they played it at my next door neighbour's funeral and I felt really, really sad - he was like a spare dad to me - I can still remember him fixing my bike. And his wife (like a spare mum to me) and family were so upset at the funeral (as was I)... brings it all back. He wasn't that old but just couldn't give up the ciggies I think... lung cancer took him IIRC, I was still pretty young.
I see me getting upset by that tune as me showing my respect to 'uncle' Ernie. :?

Also, and this will sound most odd if you haven't heard it, but this 'candlelight' version of DJ Sammy's "Heaven" (it's nothing like the original - I don't like that) is <ahem> almost making me  right now! ....hence I searched for 'music make you cry' and found this thread!

But I'm a blokey bloke really, and never cry, never ever - got it? ;)

The Power of Two, by the Indigo Girls

just an excerpt

Now we're talking bout a difficult thing
And your eyes are getting wet
Well I took us for better and I took us for worse
And don't you ever forget it
The steel bars between me and a promise
Suddenly bend with ease
The closer I'm bound in love to you
The closer I am to free

Cos we're okay, we're fine
Baby I'm here to stop your crying
Chase all the ghosts from your head
I'm stronger than the monsters beneath your bed
Smarter than the tricks played on your heart
Look at them together then we'll take them apart
Adding up the total of a love that's true
Multiply life by the power of two.

Slushy and romantic I know, but the words kind of describe how being married should (and for a time, did) feel.

Cry - Waterfront... that always makes me cry for some reason... dont really know why lol maybe something to do with the title

Another that definitely makes me cry everytime is...

Wind Beneath my wings - Bette Midler... this was played at my Dads Funeral... it can get really embarrassing when played whilst i'm out and i burst into tears then once the song is finished i'm fine again... can look a bit odd... altho Close friends and family have got used to it now :)

Such a beautiful song... and in the top ten i believe of funeral songs...

Thought of another Not Alone - Michael Jackson... my song to my Dad... 'you are not alone i am here with you' it was released in the same year of my Dad passing away...

Its nice to have happy and sad memories that can be related to a song... songs have so many emotions within them... lyrics can mean and express so much to yourself or another!...

I recently listened to some music from around the time of the Crusades. It didn't reduce me to tears, but I found some of the songs deeply moving. One, allegedly by Richard the Lionheart, tells of the King's temporary imprisonment in the Holy Land, and expresses how he misses his friends who are endeavouring to ransom him. The words and music, more or less a thousand years old, are very moving. The last line, 'but I am still a prisoner' [sung in Norman French] seemed to echo deep sadness and regret down the ages. How trivial my few worries seemed in comparison.

As a singer myself, I kinda got used to singing love songs. But after my recent-ish break-up with my partner of 5 years, every song I sang on stage had more meaning. It was bloody hard sometimes.!
When you put yourself in the place of a writer, some of those artistes must have been going through hell, and to then express it so beautifully that it means something to an audience, and to have the bol****s to get up there and sing it .....well I just find it incredibly humbling.
Last time a song made me cry I was driving down the M1 with the new Sheryl Crow album playing in the car. It's called Wildflower. Anyway....track ten(always on your side) had me bawling like a baby as it just seemed so relevant to how I feel right now.
I put it on repeat, pulled off the motorway and had a good cry.
I'm better now! lol x

I agree about Antony & the Johnsons, gets me welled up too.

There is something about people crying, or being close to tears, that brings me out in sympathy too. I think that's part of what gets me about the Sinead O'Connor song - thinking about her in that video. Also another song which always makes me cry is "Shorley Wall" by Ooberman. There's a bit at the end which is spoken by the singer Sophia Churney, where she says
She sings when she hurts. It's good to sink deep inside, to my only touchstone. She's a friend in the dark, my strength, my memories. She delights in torture, but she holds my hand and never shields me. Because the best shield is to accept the pain, then what can really destroy me? Let me close my eyes and lie invisible, and perhaps the clouds will pass through me...and you can actually hear the tears welling up as she says it, and the fact that she is struggling to carry on talking without letting them break through. It brings out exactly the same reaction in me every time.

Not read through the thread so forgive me of someone else has mentioned Chicago and 'If You Leave Me Now'.

From the opening horns, finger-bells, strings and brushed snare drum, this is one hell of an emotional ride.

This is a song which puts me in a very reflective mood and yet I don't really know why. It's not as if it has a personal connection, doesn't bring back memories of anyone running away, dying or anything like that. It's just SAD!

One thing I've noticed is that the song doesn't 'settle down', it's got an uncomfortable feel to it as though it's restless (like one would be when fearing that the love of your life is about to leave you). Peter Cetera really means it when he goes 'ooh, ooh, ooh now baby please don't go'. And then the horns come in at various points almost as a reminder, a not-so-distant cry as to what is going on. (One thinks of a schoolground na, na, na-na, na taunt.)

But just as the song sounds it's going to calm down and find a 'grip', it rises up again 'We've come too far to leave it all behind' - the strings descend with a sigh - before rising up again (this time via a VIth for added impact) 'A love like ours, this love is hard to find' before finally, it begins to land 'How can we end it all this way, when tomorrow comes and we both regret the things we said today'.

Twelve string guitar solo is then joined by emotional strings almost as if it's too much. And the coda sees the string section sparring with Cetera's cries 'oooh now baby please don't go'.

This song fascinates me. I love it and yes, it makes me down right miserable!!!!

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Robbie Williams' - Angels

I had my first kiss to that song and it was always really special to me as I genuinely loved the guy (aged 12!!). I know it sounds stupid but we never got together and I never told him how I felt and now it's too late.

The song was played at his funeral 18 months ago and it gets me in tears every time. I used to have to leave my (very busy) bar at work to go and cry for a bit if the DJ played it!

Morning has Broken and REM - Everybody Hurts are also songs that have funeral-related memories for me.

Also "Wind beneath my wings" makes me bawl my eyes out. I don't know why but this song just touches me and I want it as the first dance at my wedding.

Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold
Greenday - Good Riddance
Christina Aguilera - Beautiful
And loads more...

I guess I'm quite an emotional person!! Like emmwalker the Cancer Research ad's really get me, (especially the ones "My [X] should be here" as it's so true about so many people I have loved, and the old ones where the little boy was looking in the mirror and the image of his mother appeared behind him (or her, I can't exactly remember) mad eme bawl my eyes out every single time I saw it. :()

I watched 'The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas' the other night and found myself bawling my eyes out at the end when Dolly Parton is telling Burt Reynolds to go without her, with her song "I will always Love you".

Black Eyed Dog by Nick Drake.

Even though it's a fairly simple song, there's real sadness and desperation in Drake's vocal that tugs at my heartstrings and makes me well up every time I hear it. :(

Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees

The only time I have had a tear in my eye at a gig was whilst seeing Radiohead performing Fake Plastic Trees. Which was strange because I'd always thought of it as one of their weaker songs. I must be getting soft in my old age.

I don't think it's the actual song that makes me cry, it's the memories that these songs evoke. When I hear particular songs, they remind me of a certain period in my life but also as I grow older, the meaning of these songs shift. These would be, Damien Rice, Sir Jeff Buckley, Sigor Ros - always bring a tear to me eye!

Just for a Moment- Aqualung

Just for a moment
Everything I treasured was gone
Just for a moment
The world was full of pain

Oh how I love you

Just for a moment
I faced my life alone
Just for a moment
My luck had finally run out

Oh how I love you

The same thing that blew us together
Might blow us apart
Keep a piece of me precious
And close to your heart

Just for a moment
All of my nightmares came true
Just for a moment
My heart was broken in two

Oh how I need you
Oh how I'd miss you
Oh how I love you

This is such a beautiful song, but it took me by surprise shortly after a very dear loved one died recently. I spent an hour pulled in to the kerb on Abbeydale Road pulling myself together.

I'm sobbing just typing this.

As has already been said before, it's often the memories linked to certain songs that can make me cry.

There's been quite a few songs (sad or otherwise) just lately that have made me cry but one song that is guaranteed to bring me to tears no matter how sad or happy I am feeling is the LeAnne Rimes song, How Do I Live Without You?

I've not been able to listen to this song yet since my ex ended our relationship almost two months ago.

LeAnn Rimes - How Do I Live Without You

How do I,
Get through one night without you?
If I had to live without you,
What kind of life would that be?
And I,
I need you in my arms
Need you to hold
You're my world, my heart, my soul

Bridge:
If you ever leave,
Baby you would take away everything
Good in my life
And tell me now

Chorus:
How do I live without you
I want to know
How do I breathe without you
If you ever go
How do I ever, ever survive
How do I
Oh how do I live

Without you,
There'd be no sun in my sky
There would be no love in my life
There'd be no world left for me
And I
Baby, I don't know what I would do
I'd be lost if I lost you

Bridge:
If you ever leave
Baby you would take away everything
Real in my life
And tell me now

Chorus:
How do I live without you
I want to know
How do i breathe without
If you ever go
How do ever, ever survive
How do I
Oh how do I live

Please tell me baby
How do I go on

Bridge:
If you ever leave
Baby you would take away everything
I need you with me
Baby don't you know that you're everything
Good in my life
And tell me now

(Chorus)

I didnt mean to hurt you, I'm sorry that I made you cry

Also, Strange and Beautiful by Aqualung makes me sad, it's all about wanting someone who doesn't even seem to notice you

I've been watching your world from afar,
I've been trying to be where you are,
And I've been secretly falling apart,
I'll see.
To me, you're strange and you're beautiful,
You'd be so perfect with me but you just can't see,
You turn every head but you don't see me.

I'll put a spell on you,
You'll fall asleep and I'll put a spell on you.
And when I wake you,
I'll be the first thing you see,
And you'll realise that you love me.

Mariah Carey - Circles...

Ever since you left me
I've been trying to hide the pain
Painting on a smile with lipstick
Putting on a big charade
So difficult to keep pretending
It's getting harder everyday
It's plain to see I'm cold and heartsick
Since you turned and walked away
I just keep going round and round
And round in circles
Keep on tumbling down

Oh boy my world has changed
And I don't think I can make it without you
Nothing's the same
You got me running around in circles over you
(running around in circles over you)

Saturday I saw you
Holding hands with someone new
Somehow I kept my composure
Just like everything was cool
But inside I kept repeating
Don't you let them see you cry
So I casually turned my head
As the tears rolled down my eyes
I just keep going round and round
And round in circles
Keep on tumbling down

[chorus]
Oh boy my world has changed
And I don't think I can make it without you
Nothing's the same
You got me running around in circles over you

Everything is you
How can I pull through
My heart is consumed I'm so confused
Still caught up in you, love can be so cruel
Baby don't know how to turn you loose.

[chorus]
Oh boy my world has changed
And I don't think I can make it without you youuuuu ahhh!
No, nothing's the same nothins the same!
You got me running around
And running around
And running around
Nothing's the same
Baby baby cause you
Got me running around

i loved her first - by some obscure country singer.
any father will sob buckets.

same as this one by Bob Carlisle, Butterfly Kisses

There's two things I know for sure:
She was sent here from heaven and she's
daddy's little girl.
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes and
I thank god for all the joy in my life
Oh, but most of all
For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer;
sticking little white flowers all up in her
hair; "Walk beside the pony, Daddy, it's my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny, Daddy, but I sure tried."
In all that I've done wrong I know I must
have done something right to deserve a hug
every morning and butterfly kisses at night.

Sweet 16 today
She's looking like her mama a little more everyday
One part woman, the other part girl.
To perfume and make-up from ribbons and curls
Trying her wings out in a great big world.

But I remember
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer; sticking
little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you, Daddy, But if you
don't mind I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."
With all that I've done wrong I must have done
something right to deserve her love every morning
and butterfly kisses at night.

All the precious time
Like the wind, the years go by.
Precious butterfly.
Spread your wings and fly.

She'll change her name today.
She'll make a promise and I'll give her away.
Standing in the bride-room just staring at her.
She asked me what I'm thinking and I said "I'm not
sure-I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl."
She leaned over...gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there,
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk my down the aisle, Daddy-it's just about time."
"Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy? Daddy, don't cry!"

Oh, with all that I've done wrong I must have
done something right.
To deserve your love every morning and butterfly
kisses-I couldn't ask God for more, man this is what love is.

I know I gotta let her go, but I'll always remember
every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses.

I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one
She told me so
And she still means the world to me
Just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl
Time changes everything
Life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it still hard to give her away
I loved her first

How could that beautiful women with you
Be the same freckle face kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairy tales to
And tucked into bed all those nights
And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But its still hard to give her away
I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you
I loved her first

that's it i'm now blubbering like a baby.

If I should stay,
I would only be in your way.
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you ev'ry step of the way.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
You, my darling you. Hmm.

Bittersweet memories
that is all I'm taking with me.
So, goodbye. Please, don't cry.
We both know I'm not what you, you need.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.

(Instrumental solo)

I hope life treats you kind
And I hope you have all you've dreamed of.
And I wish to you, joy and happiness.
But above all this, I wish you love.

And I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I will always love you.
I, I will always love you.

You, darling, I love you.
Ooh, I'll always, I'll always love you.

The most amazing woman I've ever met died last year.

She wasn't only my surrogate Mum, she was my best friend and I miss her more than I've ever missed anything or anyone in my life.

Fortunately her spirit is very much alive.

The lyrics to this particular track are so relevant in terms of our relationship.

Whenever I hear it play, I always become a tad emotional.

Watch and listen here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiS8YokFzeY)

It must have been cold there in my shadow,
to never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way,
you always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
while you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name -- for so long,
a beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Chorus
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and ev'rything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it,
I would be nothing with out you.

Chorus
Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and ev'rything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the wind beneath my wings.

Fly, fly, fly away,
you let me fly so high.
Oh, fly, fly,
so high against the sky, so high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you,
the wind beneath my wings.

I love Sarah Mclachlan i love all her songs i have her album she is the best singer ever and i think the best thing Canada did was produce her..Hip hip hooray for the Canadians.

Sarah Mclachlan did a song for a TV series called Due South called possession and every time i listen to it i think of this TV Series which i am a big fan of and i cry like a baby..i really do, i'm so emotional and the words are amazing.
Listen as the wind blows from across the great divide
voices trapped in yearning, memories trapped in time
the night is my companion, and solitude my guide
would I spend forever here and not be satisfied?

and I would be the one
to hold you down
kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
and after, I'd wipe away the tears
just close your eyes dear

Through this world I've stumbled
so many times betrayed
trying to find an honest word to find
the truth enslaved
oh you speak to me in riddles
and you speak to me in rhymes
my body aches to breathe your breath
your words keep me alive

And I would be the one
to hold you down
kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
and after, I'd wipe away the tears
just close your eyes dear

Into this night I wander
it's morning that I dread
another day of knowing of
the path I fear to tread
oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
nothing stands between us here
and I won't be denied

and I would be the one
to hold you down
kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
and after, I'd wipe away the tears
just close your eyes

her words are so deep and meaningful and she has wrote them all her self she hasnt copied anyone.
and you have got to have heard the angel song, another group of kids called Angelis did a cover of it..

In the arms of an angel
fly away from here
from this dark cold hotel room
and the endlessness that you fear
you are pulled from the wreckage
of your silent reverie
you're in the arms of the angel
may you find some comfort there

i just love listening to her and she has the most amazing voice i ever heard.

Other than Sarah i like Faith Hills song There you'll be that makes me cry and also Wind beneath my Wings as it was played at the funeral of someone i cared for. I also find James Blunts songs make me a little weepy like goodbye my lover.

Never Had No-One Ever from The Queen Is Dead.

Apart from being one of Mozza's finest vocals to date, you can hear he means every word and it's sung from the gut of his belly.

After losing my boyfriend last year, a friend of his made a DVD of him with the filmed images that he had of him out on his bike and the film of the bike cortege that accompanied the hearse on his last trip to the crematorium, and he backed it with 'Chasing cars'. I'd rather never hear that song again- it has very sad memories attached to it.

World Party: I fell back alone. Kind of a breaking up with someone song, very true and very poignant...and Love will tear us apart by joy division (think i might have mentioned both of these either on the previous version of this thread or a similar one, so sorry for the repeat!)

If we walk through each other
As we leave the room
You don't have to tell me that it's over
Whoever you were then
I never really knew
And you got no need to know me now

CHORUS
You can't see the bottom from the top
You don't see the edge before you drop
And I fell back alone
And I fell back alone
And I fell

Is love trying all the right moves
To stop the walls from coming up
But I can't look over this at all
I'm in some different place
Strangest pictures on my wall
I drew them yesterday
I never thought I'd find the time at all

CHORUS

Forever doesn't mean forever
It just means maybe some other time or place
But how can two souls still eat together
When life has lost its taste

How can we live together
In bed and face to face
And not see anyone at all
It's time to make a wish
And let it float on down the stream
And we can cry a little
For a time that could have been

Live it all my love
Live it well my love
Live it long my love
Live it all my love

CHORUS

Jill Scott's "Slowly Surely..." :(

Slowly surely,
I walk away from
that old desperate and dazed love
caught up in the maze of love
the crazy craze of love
thought it was good
thought it was real
thought it was
but it wasn't love

I just don't know
Where i should go
So
Slowly surely
I walk away from
self-serving
undeserving
constantly hurting me love
deserting me love
you said, I said, we said
but

Slowly surely
I walk away from
confusing love
misusing love
abusing love
this can't be

Slowly surely
I walk away from
self serving
undeserving
constantly hurting me love

I just don't know
where I should go
No
I just don't know
know, know, know
Where I should go
so

Slowly surely
I walk away from
that old desperate and dazed love
caught up in the maze of love
the crazy craze of love

thought it was good
thought it was real
thought it was
but it wasn't love

I just don't know where to go
So

Slowly surely
I walk away from
I walk away from
Slowly surely
I walk away from love
Oh
slowlyy, surely one step at a time
but surely
I will pass the old love aside
and love me
slowly,
surely I walk away from
slowly surely I walk away from desperating love
caught up in the maze love
crazy crazy craze of love
slowly surely, I walk away from [repeat 5 times]
Slooooooowly Suuuuuuurely, slowly surely

This is How It Feels by Inspiral Carpets.

Doesn;t make me cry every time I hear it but sometimes it does. It is a sad haunting tune and it has sad and haunting lyrics which are kind of a bit ambiguous but it paints a picture what life can feel like at its lowest points.

But of course the thing about emotional crying is it makes you feel better because of the endorphins it releases.

Brucie's "Wreck on the Highway" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evsektY_zRA)

Just watched it now and it got me straightaway

Last night I was out driving
Coming home at the end of the working day
I was riding alone through the drizzling rain
On a deserted stretch of a county two-lane
When I came upon a wreck on the highway

There was blood and glass all over
And there was nobody there but me
As the rain tumbled down hard and cold
I seen a young man lying by the side of the road
He cried Mister, won't you help me please

An ambulance finally came and took him to Riverside
I watched as they drove him away
And I thought of a girlfriend or a young wife
And a state trooper knocking in the middle of the night
To say your baby died in a wreck on the highway

Sometimes I sit up in the darkness
And I watch my baby as she sleeps
Then I climb in bed and I hold her tight
I just lay there awake in the middle of the night
Thinking 'bout the wreck on the highway

I must say, I do cry to songs, but it's not always the most obvious ones. The first time I ever cried at a gig was when I saw Queen + Paul Rodgers. They opened with Tie Your Mother Down and that was it, I'd gone. Then Radio Ga Ga set me off again, and with These Are The Days... and Bo Rhap using old footage of Freddie and the band I was almost an emotional wreckby the end. The first time I almost cried at a gig was when I saw AC/DC in 2000. They started with You Shook Me... and the ring of the opening chord made my knees go weak and sent a shiver upmy spine.

Then there's the heavy stuff that gets me going. Dream Theater, Testament, Ozzy, Slayer, Tool. All of them, and others, get me very emotional, and they don't play music that you think would be classed as emotional. I remember watching the video for In This River by Black Label Society. The video was made not long after Dimebag Darrell of Pantera had been shot dead onstage. In the video, a couple of kids played Zakk and Dimebag as kids and me and my bro were in freakin' tears. (I'm almost there now thinking about it) We even shared a brotherly/manly hug.

So, in answer to your question; YES, a song can make you cry. No matter which genre, or who it's by, if you connect with the music, the lyrics or just the feel of it, then that's all you need.

By the way, the Sunscreen song always moves me everytime I hear it.

I don't like having songs that make me cry. You should like a song for its own sake so I don't really like it when they become associated with a memory for me.

However, I am but human so the suspects are:

Bright Eyes... Art Garfunkel I just think of the film and I'm off!

My last tango... Nerina Pallot... I'd just got into her and was going through a pappy break up early last Summer where neither of us wanted to split up but circumstance made us (all for the right reasons.) Every time this came on I'd burst into tears! Shame as it's a beautiful song.

You do something to me... Paul Weller... My best mate had it as her second song at her wedding, partly because she loves it, she loves me (and I love Paul Weller.) I was meant to dance to it with my long term ex (this had been planned with military precision by my mate for ages:rolleyes: ) but as he could be nowhere to be found, I ended up dancing with her brother in law instead. Therefore to me it signifies the first time I thought something was wrong and although I'd always loved the song, it still makes me feel uncomfortable and is probably one i bypass when i listen to Stanley Road.

I can understand why people cry to Aqualung songs. They are just gorgeous!

The song that makes me sob (and i mean body wracking sobbing) is
My Immortal by Evanescence

There is a long story behind it and the story actually has a happy ending, but this song reminds me of what i almost lost and i feel grateful that i have taken a leap of faith!

For me, almost anything by Queen. Freddie's voice was just immense in every single song they did and that's usually what gets me. Although, a few perfect notes from Brian's guitar wrenches a little too.

Ride On by AC/DC too.

When my marriage broke up 8 years ago, this brought me to tears, not ashamed to say so.

The Cure - Trust Lyrics

there's no-one left in the world
that i can hold onto
there is really no-one left at all
there is only you
and if you leave me now
you leave all that we were
undone
there is really no-one left
you are the only one

and still the hardest part for you
to put your trust in me
i love you more than i can say
why won't you just believe?

It's probably embarrassing to say so, but My Chemical Romance's "Famous Last Words" almost brings me to tears. It's just such a powerful song.

Plus "Shine Acoustic" by Muse. That's so nice!
