We were called the Raiders and used to play alternate Saturdays to you at St Columbas, Crosspool. We weren't in your league. It was a good Saturday night and with a bit of luck you'd get to walk a bird home.

Yes I remember many of the bands names. However, I was playing in a band called "The Tribunes" and played many of the clubs, pubs and most notably the Big Dance hall in Sheffield...... can't remember the name, but it's long gone.
band Members..
John Broddle (Lead Guitar & Vocals) Ice Blue Fender Strat & Green Burns Bison 12 string, Vox Twin Reverb and modded Copicat
Peter Bell Thats Me... (Bass Guitar & Vocals) Sunburst Fender Precision
Bob Lowery (Drums & Vocals) Slingerland Kit
Mick Steer (Rhythm Guitar & Vocals) Hofner Verithin later replaced by...
John Vigg Fender Strat I think later replaced by.....
Terry Vigg using same guitar.
The most exciting thing was getting your shirts ripped trying to get back to the dressing room. Was it the Alhambra? :loopy:Played loads of clubs in Rawmarsh,Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Goole, Hull, Wakefield. Famously played at RAF Finningley the week after the BeeGee's before they were famous.

Fred Guite anyone have any stories to share and fond memories of my brother, who sadly died in 75. Drummer with various such as Joe Cocker, The Lizards etc. Does anyone have any photos.. My father also Fred was a drummer in many of the clubs such as Queens Road Social Club and Attercliffe in the early days. I have many memories of seeing the groups that went through the clubs, he always got a signed photograph of them for me and I kept them all in a book, unfortunately I no longer have it, what a shame. hi busy.P's my husband remembers your brother and father, your dad played at woodhouse central club and my husband steve, and steve saxon played in a band with young freddie. he says freddie was the greatest drummer he ever played with he once came to the rose and crown at darnall for a rehearsal and only brought a tamborine what freddie could get out of a tamborine was incredible. freddie was very wild and full of fun great bloke.

I remember seeing Bear playing at a pub just off Mansfield Road in a duo with another lad on guitar must be 15 years ago. Bear was playing some great slide guitar and he had a fantastic voice on him. They also had a massive PA system which sounded amazing. What's he up to nowadays?

I used to follow John O'Haras Playboys in the late sixties and saw Joe Cocker many times at the Arbourthorne Hotel. I knew Alf the landlord, great guy.
Have often wondered what happened to the Playboys, I once travelled to a club in Leicester where they recorded a "Live" album which included a song called "Spicks and Specs" I think. I cannot find any trace of them on the internet and would love to get a copy of that album. I bought Joe Cocker's first album upon arrival in Australia in 1969. We wore out a few tyres driving from pubs to clubs in those days.

Hi Cal, (Whitefender). Re: Phil Crookes.
As you will probably have gathered I played with him for nearly three yrs:'62 to 65', then Dave Hopper joined us. The last time I saw Phil he was living about half a mile from me,I used to see his (wife/partner) quite often and he called into my shop to let me have...what was to become Joe and The Avengers 'lost tape'. He swore me to secrecy about it but next thing I know it was being released.I think he had become a 'carer' of some sort, certainly had lost his 'Rocker image', short back and sides and all smart.I haven't seen him since then perhaps 10 yrs ago.Great guitar player but wanted to go 'country' a' la Chet Atkins.Always very shy on stage.Lovely lad and when he left we missed him.

I'm not surprised you missed him G, in my opinion, he was one of the greatest lead guitarist in Sheffield at that time, what ever happened to Bob E who played bass ?
If you really wanted to play again, I'm sure you wouldn't have any problem getting into a band, there are still a lot of old timers playing around the traps so I hear, and the music of that time is still very popular.

The only thing I didn't respect Joe for....He got Vernon Nash and Dave Green 'hovering around' at the last few gigs we did, obviously to learn the sets.He never told Bob or myself he didn't want us anymore after three and a half yrs;It didn't worry us, as we joined "The Cherokees" together about a fortnight after. They were a club band but earned three times as much as Joe. He went to France and when he came back nobody wanted to know him, he had no money and no band (They were fed up with playing and not being paid) so disillusioned with music, he went to work for W.H.Smith's loading their early morning vans.We didn't see him for ages until he turned up at a pub we were playing (with Eileen Webster) one Friday night. He came home with us but didn't seem to want to go home, We stayed up all night and I had to go to work in the morning, play football in the afternoon and 'rock' a WMC at night. Some day.!!I keep promising I will write about those times as the books on Joe are not 'factually' correct.

Thanks for your honesty G, unfortunately I can't share what I know, as I swore I wouldn't repeat anything he has told me over the last 40 years when he has come down under.
But I can tell you that he regrets a lot of the decisions he has made in the past, and the people he has hurt along the way, he was very sincere when he told me that, sober too.
I knew Eileen very well, I'd love to catch up with her again, I think you should write a book, it would be good to read your account of things.

Getting back to Joe Cockers era.I was bass player with the Scott William Combo at the time along with Dave Hawley on lead. When Dave left to join the Lorne Gibson Trio,I got Phil Crookes in the band on lead.Kenny Slade joined soon afterwards on drums.I still have Scotts 1963/64 Vox AC30 ,(some time later I joined club group the Vantennas and used it for bass) which Scott played guitar through as well as our vocals at the same time.We played the Greengate Inn at High Green on Tuesdays alternating with Joe Cockers band at that time and the Hillbilly Cats.I think Phil has recently moved to Woodseats.............................your white Fender Strat, and my Vox AC30 from the same period would no doubt have a tale to tell!

This is a very old picture of me with a Futurama III:

Scroll down to picture of Mike Fisher aka Zeke.
Nice photo Mike!! I sold one of those on Ebay a couple of years ago. Someone had replaced the neck with one of those shovel-headstocked Vox necks, it had been repainted a horrible navy blue, the scratchplate was smashed with bits missing, missing tremolo arm and modern replacement knobs. It was a train wreck of a guitar but I still got £350 for it from a collector in Brussels! must be the George Harrison connection.

I suppose a lot of guitarist from the sixties let their gear go for peanuts, I did.
Sold my '61 strat for a pittance and my exwife was always trying to get me to sell stuff for food, food I ask you.
Fortunately she left me and I now have a more understanding wife who is also a musician and singer so guitars come and stay these days.

Picked this 1965 Fender Jazz up in 66; sold it in 2005 for £3500

Yes I knew that Freddie played two bass drums but didnt know he was the 1st in Sheffield to do that, thats fantastic to hear thanks for that. Nice to know that you also knew my father. P

Hi again
Freddie, came over to Square Circles with Barry and Jerry from Lizards, as far as i can remember , we swapped singers, drummer and bass player because other members of Lizards and Square Circles wanted to go to Germany, i played rhythm guitar, can't remember exact year prob around 66, remember watching Sheff Wed play in cup final at a pub on way to a gig in Scunthorpe.
Sorry i do not have any photographs, can't recollect going to Fred's house
