try sheffield council dog warden service. they have a nasty habit of gathering up dogs and holding them to ransom at far away "kennels".
many years ago a very friendly dog which had always roamed freely without any problem was picked up by the dog warden "service" on the next street. the warden rang home demanding £25 from a pensioner who, being the only person at home that day could not afford to pay and did not know what to do. the warden told her that the fee would be £75 as she was now taking the dog to a kennel.
by the time the family (on benefits) got home the demand was more that £100 which was beyond reach.
i found out about this and made enquiries. to cut a long story short, i was able to "adopt" the dog after a week of being fed bull**** by rainbow kennels where the dog was imprisoned, them saying someone else was going to look at the dog with a view to adoption. eventually i went and paid a £40 adoption fee which i was told went to the RSPCA not the kennel. they never bothered to check my home and garden where i said the dog would be kept.
when i collected the dog it had kennel cough, had not eaten for a few days and was losing lots of fur. how these people get a licence to run a kennel i will never know. i would hate to think i was one of the people who paid to leave my pet there.
the dog was very happy to see me and could not get in the car fast enough. needless to say it was returned to a very grateful owner and children. the unnecessary incarceration had a traumatic effect on the dog, changing it from a friendly animal to one that barked at everyone.
the dog could have been returned home without charge (we already pay for the dog warden service in our council tax). but this evil council institution which should be dealing vicious strays, not friendly animals that walk into their trap, decided to bully a family who could not afford to sue them.
needless to say, this is the reason the RSPCA will never get another cent from me. they dont seem to bothered by the local foxes who have eaten a large number of my neighbours cats, of course, the foxes dont have owners to send bills to, silly me.
i hope your dog returns safe and well, but be prepared for anything.
start immediately by putting up posters locally.
good luck.

I just wanted to say that stray dogs no longer go to Rainbow kennels, and the stray dog service is nothing to do with the RSPCA, also what can they do about the foxes really

Anyway...I hope that you soon find your little dog joffandanmum, call the dog warden service asap and as muckymurphy says get lots of posters up, I am sure that he will soon be home where he belongs :)

The dog was roaming free and your surprised that the dog was picked up. I dont blame them for charging the family. They should be charged for wasting their time. The warden had been called out to round up a dog that the family was allowing to roam free because they couldnt be bothered to walk it! A dog should be under control in a public place at all times. simple as.
